The overview

What owners are dealing with

You chose the Volvo S60 Recharge because Volvo promised something genuinely different: a luxury sports sedan with a 400-horsepower T8 plug-in hybrid powertrain, a 35-mile electric range for most commutes, and a Scandinavian safety suite that has defined the brand for decades. The brochure said this was the car that could do everything: run on electricity in the city, accelerate like a sport sedan on the highway, and keep your family protected by some of the most sophisticated driver-assist technology on the market. For many 2020-2026 S60 Recharge owners, the reality has been something else entirely.

Ten NHTSA recalls affecting the S60 Recharge cover defects from the Automatic Emergency Brake that could fail to activate, to a high-voltage battery module that can short-circuit and catch fire while the car sits parked in your driveway fully charged. Two separate recalls were needed to address the rearview camera (a federal safety standard requirement) because the first software fix made the problem worse. The braking system, ABS, stability control, and traction control simultaneously dropped out on 2023 vehicles and required a rushed software patch.

Beyond the formal recalls, the Sensus infotainment system (the nerve center that controls HVAC, backup camera, navigation, and every ADAS interface) has accumulated hundreds of NHTSA complaints for spontaneous black screens, audio squeals, and system freezes that leave drivers without defroster, backup camera, and all audible safety alerts mid-drive. Software updates applied by dealers have repeatedly failed to prevent recurrence. The T8 PHEV powertrain introduces its own failure modes that don't exist on non-hybrid S60s: engine oil dilution from short EV trips, a 12V auxiliary battery that drains dead in a week of parking, and a transmission that hesitates after reverse then launches the car violently into gear. If this is your daily driver, these are not hypothetical risks.

Brake System Defect — AEB Non-Engagement — Recall 20V144000 (2020)Safety2020
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 20V144000 covers a software/hardware incompatibility that could prevent the Automatic Emergency Brake from detecting obstacles and engaging, directly removing a critical crash-avoidance layer. If a 2020 S60 Recharge owner presented to a Volvo dealer with AEB-related complaints before or after the recall remedy was applied and the dealer failed to diagnose or durably repair the system, those visits count toward Song-Beverly. AEB non-function is a safety defect that substantially impairs the value of a vehicle sold on the strength of its active-safety suite.

Typical fix

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will update the Active Safety Domain Master (ASDM) software, free of charge. The recall began April 9, 2020. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo's number for this recall is R29998.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure - Stall or No-Start RiskSafety2020
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V414000 addresses a low-pressure fuel pump fuse that can blow and cause the engine to stall while driving — a loss of motive power that creates a rear-end crash risk. For S60 Recharge T8 owners, stall events can be especially unpredictable because the vehicle may switch between EV and combustion power without clear driver notice. Documented repeat stall events after the recall remedy fuse replacement are strong Song-Beverly evidence of a defect that has not been corrected in a reasonable number of attempts.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the fuse, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 2, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10100.

Seat / Seat Fastener DefectSafety2021-2022
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V682000 addresses seat-belt automatic locking retractors that may deactivate early, preventing a child restraint system from securing correctly in a crash. While the remedy is a belt assembly inspection and replacement, owners of 2021-2022 S60 Recharge vehicles who experienced belt-retractor symptoms before the recall was remedied — and who had dealer visits dismissed as 'working as designed' — may have actionable repair-attempt history under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the seat belt assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 13, 2021. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-888-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10111.

Engine Internal Failure Risk - Stall, Power Loss, or FireSafety2022-2023
Symptoms

engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 22V793000 covers an ECM software error that can prevent the combustion engine from starting, leaving the S60 Recharge reliant on its depleting HV battery until motive power is lost entirely. NHTSA ODI 11501021 documents an owner whose VIN was excluded from the recall despite an identical failure at 42,000 miles. Owners with out-of-scope VINs or post-remedy power-loss events should document every dealer visit; multiple loss-of-drive events constitute a clear safety-defect repair pattern under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealers will update the ECM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 8, 2022. Owners may contact Volvo Car's customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10198.

Brake System Defect — BCM2 ABS/ESC Loss — Recall 23V012000 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V012000 covers a diagnostic error in the Brake Control Module 2 that causes the ABS, Electronic Stability Control, and traction control to simultaneously drop out, materially increasing stopping distance and crash risk on slippery surfaces. For S60 Recharge owners, regenerative-braking interaction with ABS can make a BCM2 failure particularly abrupt. Owners who experienced brake warning lights before the OTA remedy was delivered — and who had repeated dealer visits — have a documented safety-defect repair history that supports a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Volvo will release an over-the-air (OTA) BCM2 software update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed March 15, 2023. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10217.

Electrical System RecallFunctional2023
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V188000 addresses a false Diagnostic Trouble Code that triggers an 'e-Call Service Required' warning, masking whether the emergency-call system is actually functional. While the warning itself is a Functional nuisance, the underlying risk — that a real e-call failure could go undetected — gives it a safety dimension. If the telematics software update failed to resolve the warning and the owner made repeat dealer visits, those visits contribute to a Song-Beverly repair count.

Typical fix

Dealers will update the telematics and connectivity antenna module (TCAM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 16, 2023. Owners may contact Volvo Car's customer service 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10225.

Airbag / Occupant Detection Defect - Airbag May Not Deploy CorrectlySafety2020-2024
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V780000 covers an unsecured passenger airbag that can deploy improperly in a crash, increasing injury risk. The broad MY scope (2020-2024 S60 Recharge) means nearly the entire fleet is affected. If an owner presented with airbag warning lights before this recall was issued and received a 'no fault found' or incomplete repair, those pre-recall dealer visits may be counted as repair attempts under Song-Beverly if the root cause was the same airbag-mounting defect.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and tighten the bolts securing the passenger air bag, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 5, 2024. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10254.

High-Voltage Battery / Electrical Defect - Power Loss or Fire RiskCatastrophic2020-2022
Symptoms

EV warning message; reduced power; charging fault; battery recall; fire risk warning

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V179000 documents a confirmed fire risk: the T8 PHEV high-voltage battery module can short-circuit internally when fully charged and parked, with fire as the consequence. This is one of the few true Catastrophic classifications — fire risk while the vehicle is stationary and unattended. Owners who received the remedy (battery module replacement) but continue to experience HV battery warnings or reduced EV range should document every subsequent dealer visit; a defect that resurfaces after a recall remedy is among the strongest Song-Beverly fact patterns.

Typical fix

Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles until the remedy has been completed. Dealers will inspect and replace the high-voltage battery module as necessary. In addition, dealers will update the software to monitor the battery. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification l

Rearview Camera Display Failure — Recall 25V282000 (2023-2025, Software v1)Safety2023-2025
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V282000 covers a rearview camera that fails to display when the vehicle is placed in reverse — a direct FMVSS 111 rear-visibility violation. NHTSA ODI 11668530 documents that the recall software update (v3.5.24) actually made the problem worse, increasing failure frequency from monthly to weekly. If an S60 Recharge owner received the 25V282000 remedy but the backup camera continued to fail, the post-remedy failures and this recall's supersession by 25V908000 demonstrate an unresolved safety defect, which is a strong Song-Beverly argument for multiple repair attempts.

Typical fix

The software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 27, 2025. Owners may contact Volvo Car customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10320.

Rearview Camera Display Failure — Recall 25V908000 (2023-2025, Software v2 / Superseding)Safety2023-2025
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V908000 supersedes 25V282000 for the same rearview camera non-display defect, acknowledging that the first software remedy was inadequate. An owner whose vehicle received the 25V282000 software update and then experienced continued camera failures before 25V908000 was available has documented multiple repair attempts on an active safety system. Under Song-Beverly, the combined repair history across both recalls for the same underlying defect counts toward the 'reasonable number of attempts' threshold.

Typical fix

The software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 24, 2026. Owners may contact Volvo Car’s customer service at 1-800-458-1552. Volvo Car's number for this recall is R10333. Vehicle Identification Numbers

Sensus Infotainment Black Screen / Freeze / Audio Squeal — Safety Features InaccessibleFunctional2020-2025
Symptoms

center display goes black while driving; loud audio squeal from speakers; screen freezes mid-drive; backup camera inaccessible when display is blank; HVAC stops responding including defroster; all turn-signal alert sounds disappear; navigation disappears; infotainment system requires forced reboot by holding home button while driving; issue recurs after Volvo software update

Why it matters for your claim

If the Sensus infotainment system has been presented to a Volvo dealer three or more times within the warranty period for the same freeze, black-screen, or audio-loss symptom without a lasting repair, those visits can count toward the Song-Beverly 'reasonable number of attempts' threshold. The simultaneous loss of backup camera, defroster, and all audible safety alerts (turn signal, blind spot, parking sensors) during a screen-fault event gives this 'Functional' issue a real safety dimension that attorneys can invoke to heighten the lemon-law argument.

Typical fix

Reflash Sensus head unit to current OEM-certified software (VIDA); if freeze or black screen persists after two reflash attempts, replace head unit under warranty.

T8 PHEV High-Voltage Battery Degradation / Reduced EV Range Below SpecDrivability/Reliability2020-2024
Symptoms

electric-only range drops well below Volvo's advertised 35+ miles within first 2-3 model years; battery warning lights appear; charging sessions complete but range reads lower than expected; HV battery management system fault codes stored; dealer confirms accelerated capacity loss; charging time increases relative to indicated state-of-charge

Why it matters for your claim

For 2020-2022 MY owners whose battery module was replaced under Recall 25V179000 and who continue to experience reduced EV range or battery faults post-remedy, repeated warranty repair attempts for a persistent defect strengthen a Song-Beverly claim. For owners outside the recall scope, documenting measured EV range against Volvo's advertised specification at each dealer visit creates a factual record of non-conformance.

Typical fix

For vehicles within the 25V179000 recall scope (2020-2022 MY): battery module replacement and BMS software update at no cost. For 2023+ MY experiencing non-recall capacity loss: diagnostic under powertrain warranty; module replacement if capacity falls below Volvo's warranty threshold (typically 70% of original usable capacity within 8 years / 100,000 miles).

T8 PHEV Engine Oil Dilution from Short-Trip EV OperationDrivability/Reliability2020-2025
Symptoms

fuel smell from engine oil on dipstick; oil level rising above MAX on dipstick; oil appears thin or discolored; low oil pressure warning; check engine light with oil-related codes; engine knock or bearing noise at high mileage; reduced oil change intervals required

Why it matters for your claim

If a dealer dismisses oil-dilution symptoms and returns the car without adequate remedy, and the owner later presents with engine damage caused by the same root cause, the initial failed service visit can be counted as a repair attempt for Song-Beverly purposes. Volvo's acknowledged TSB guidance creates the manufacturer-notice element needed for a strong claim.

Typical fix

Drain and replace diluted oil immediately with VCC-RBS2AE / Dexos2-spec oil; reduce oil-change interval to 10,000 mi or 12 months maximum regardless of PHEV driving mode mix; if bearing or ring damage is present, short-block replacement under powertrain warranty.

12V Auxiliary / Mid-Voltage Battery Module Parasitic Drain — Dead Battery After Short Parking PeriodDrivability/Reliability2020-2025
Symptoms

vehicle will not start after 5-7 days parked without charging; 'Critical Safety Fault Battery — Stop and Service immediately' message; vehicle loses motive power while driving; warning lamps illuminate including parking brake, park assist, and vehicle shut-off message; requires tow; newly replaced 12V battery drains again within weeks; dealer replaces battery but problem recurs

Why it matters for your claim

Multiple documented tow events and repeated dealer battery replacements without durable resolution (as in NHTSA ODI 11473106) present a strong Song-Beverly pattern: the same defect, multiple repair attempts, same symptom returning. Each tow and each dealer visit for battery failure should be documented on a repair order with the specific symptoms.

Typical fix

Apply BMS firmware update via VIDA to suppress parasitic load during sleep mode; replace 12V auxiliary battery if discharged below recovery threshold; if MVBM is damaged by repeated deep discharge, replace MVBM. Owner mitigation: plug into L1/L2 charger when parked more than 5 days.

Pilot Assist Phantom Braking / Silent Deactivation at Highway SpeedSafety2020-2025
Symptoms

adaptive cruise control applies full emergency braking with no obstacle present at highway speeds; Pilot Assist disengages without any audible or visual warning; vehicle veers toward road edge when Pilot Assist drops; system shuts off near bridge approaches, concrete road transitions, or in bright sun; forward collision warning activates when no vehicle is nearby; driver cannot predict when system will disengage

Why it matters for your claim

Phantom braking and silent ADAS deactivation are safety-system failures under Song-Beverly. If an S60 Recharge has been brought to a dealer two or more times for Pilot Assist false activation or unexpected deactivation without durable repair, those visits support a lemon-law claim. The silent deactivation pattern — where the driver is not warned the safety net has dropped — is particularly compelling for demonstrating an unreasonable safety risk.

Typical fix

ASDM software update via VIDA or OTA; verify radar sensor alignment and windshield camera calibration; if phantom braking or silent deactivation continues after update, inspect radar module mounting and replace if sensor is misaligned.

Aisin 8-Speed Transmission Slam / Hesitate-Then-Launch After Reverse-to-Drive TransitionSafety2020-2025
Symptoms

transmission hesitates several seconds after shifting from Reverse to Drive; vehicle then launches suddenly with full force when accelerator is pressed further; occurs intermittently after EV-mode reverse operation; no DTC stored; dealer cannot duplicate; harsh 1-2 or 2-3 upshift under light acceleration; torque-converter shudder at cruising speed

Why it matters for your claim

An unexpected acceleration surge in a parking or low-speed maneuver — even without a stored DTC — constitutes a safety defect under Song-Beverly when it is reproduced, reported to a dealer, and unresolved. The absence of a diagnostic code makes the 'cannot duplicate' response predictable; owners should video the event and request that the symptom and mileage be written on every repair order.

Typical fix

TCM software calibration update via VIDA; inspect valve body if harsh shift or hesitate-then-slam persists after two calibration attempts.

HV Charging Cable Thermal Cutoff — Level 2 Charging Session Terminates PrematurelyFunctional2020-2025
Symptoms

Level 2 charging stops before battery is fully charged; charging-fault warning appears on vehicle display or mobile app; plug-in connector becomes warm to the touch; vehicle shows partial charge in morning despite overnight plug-in; fault code stored but no persistent driver alert; issue more common in summer or in ambient temps above 80°F

Why it matters for your claim

If a dealer cannot provide a reliable Level 2 charging fix after repeated visits, the vehicle's core PHEV value proposition — all-electric commuting range — is materially impaired. Under Song-Beverly, a defect that substantially impairs use or value of the vehicle is actionable even if the vehicle is technically drivable; repeated failed OBC repairs qualify.

Typical fix

OBC firmware update via VIDA; inspect OBC coolant loop for air pockets or flow restriction; bleed coolant circuit; replace OBC if thermal cutoff continues after firmware and coolant service.

Wireless Apple CarPlay Drops / Fails to Connect After Sensus Software UpdateFunctional2020-2025
Symptoms

wireless CarPlay disconnects repeatedly during drives; CarPlay fails to auto-connect on startup; iPhone shows connected but CarPlay interface does not appear; Sensus shows CarPlay icon but screen goes blank; connection drops at random intervals requiring manual reconnect; wired CarPlay works but wireless does not; issue begins or worsens after Volvo OTA update

Why it matters for your claim

Wireless CarPlay loss is typically a Functional issue; however, if the CarPlay dropout is a recurring symptom of the same Sensus software defect that also causes the black-screen and audio-loss events (iss-11), the dealer visits for both symptoms can be counted together as repair attempts for the same underlying infotainment defect, accelerating the pathway to a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Factory reset of Sensus infotainment to clear pairing profiles; update to latest Sensus software version; update iPhone iOS to current release; if drops persist, reflash Sensus head unit wireless module firmware.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act — widely known as the lemon law — protects new-vehicle buyers when a manufacturer cannot repair a defect after a reasonable number of attempts during the warranty period.

For the Volvo S60 Recharge, the defects most likely to support a Song-Beverly claim include: the Sensus infotainment freeze (documented across multiple NHTSA-acknowledged software updates that have failed to produce a lasting repair); the 12V/mid-voltage battery drain (multiple tow events documented in NHTSA complaints despite repeat dealer visits); Pilot Assist phantom braking or silent deactivation (a safety-system failure that dealers frequently cannot duplicate without extended data logging); and any defect covered by one of the ten active recalls that required more than one dealer visit to remedy.

The law does not require the same part to fail the same way every time — it requires that the same substantial impairment to use, value, or safety be presented to an authorized dealer under warranty without being fixed. Each repair order, tow receipt, and loaner-car record is evidence. California also provides a 'days out of service' path: if your S60 Recharge has been out of service cumulatively for 30 or more days during the warranty period, you may qualify for a repurchase or replacement regardless of the number of repair attempts.

Song-Beverly entitles a prevailing buyer to a full refund (purchase price less mileage offset) or a comparable replacement vehicle, plus civil penalties of up to two times the actual damages if the manufacturer's failure to repurchase was willful. Attorney fees are also recoverable, meaning qualified consumers typically pay nothing out of pocket for legal representation. This is general information only and does not constitute legal advice.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Volvo S60 Plug-In Hybrid specifically

The 'cannot duplicate' response is especially common on S60 Recharge because its most serious defects are intermittent and leave no stored Diagnostic Trouble Code.

1. DOCUMENT EVERY EVENT ON VIDEO. The Sensus black-screen, transmission slam, and Pilot Assist deactivation all occur unpredictably and resolve without a code. A dated video showing the symptom is evidence the dealer cannot dismiss as customer error. Keep your phone mounted.

2. DEMAND A WRITTEN REPAIR ORDER FOR EVERY VISIT. Every time you bring your S60 Recharge in — even if the dealer test-drives and sees nothing — insist on a repair order that documents (a) the symptom you described, (b) the mileage, and (c) the dealer's action or non-action. 'Customer reports infotainment screen went black' is more useful than 'checked vehicle, no fault found,' but both are evidence of a repair attempt.

3. REFERENCE THE SPECIFIC NHTSA COMPLAINT NUMBERS. Tell the service writer: 'NHTSA has received multiple complaints about this symptom on the S60 Recharge — ODI 11587636 and 11665222 describe exactly what I am experiencing.' This forces documentation of your awareness of the pattern and puts the dealer on notice.

4. FOR BATTERY DRAIN: Request that the dealer perform a parasitic draw test and check the mid-voltage battery module (MVBM) sleep behavior, not just replace the 12V battery. Ask for the BMS firmware version installed and document it on the repair order.

5. FOR PILOT ASSIST / TRANSMISSION SLAM: Request a test drive with the technician present on the specific road conditions (bridge approach, low-speed reverse-to-drive maneuver in a parking lot). If the tech cannot reproduce it, request extended data logging via VIDA to capture the event over your next week of driving.

6. AFTER THREE VISITS: If the same symptom has been presented three or more times without a durable fix, California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may require Volvo to repurchase or replace the vehicle. Our take

The Volvo S60 Recharge is a genuinely capable car that has been let down by the software and battery engineering behind its PHEV powertrain. The ten recalls are not random bad luck; they cluster around the T8 battery system, the ADAS software stack, and the Sensus infotainment layer — the three pillars Volvo built its 2020s value proposition on. A manufacturer that needed two separate recalls to fix a backup camera, and a third iteration of ASDM software to address phantom braking, is telling you something about the maturity of its software validation process.

For California buyers: the Sensus freeze pattern is the most actionable. It is widespread, well-documented, and repair-resistant. If your infotainment has been to the dealer three times and still goes dark on the freeway, your repair order history likely qualifies for a Song-Beverly evaluation.

FAQ

Volvo S60 Plug-In Hybrid lemon-law questions

Why does my Volvo S60 Recharge infotainment screen keep going black while I'm driving?

The Sensus Connect infotainment system on the S60 Recharge T8 has a documented pattern of spontaneous screen blackouts and system freezes, often accompanied by a loud audio squeal. When the screen goes dark, HVAC controls, the backup camera, navigation, and all safety-alert audio (turn signals, blind-spot tones) become inaccessible until the car is restarted. Volvo has issued software updates to address flash-memory fragmentation in the Sensus head unit, but NHTSA complaints document the problem recurring after dealer-applied patches. If your infotainment has blacked out more than once, insist on a written repair order every time. Under California's Song-Beverly lemon law, three unsuccessful repair attempts for the same defect within the warranty period may entitle you to a vehicle repurchase.

Is the Volvo S60 Recharge T8 PHEV high-voltage battery a fire risk?

Yes — Volvo issued Recall 25V179000 in March 2025 covering approximately 29,900 plug-in hybrid vehicles, including 2020-2022 S60 Recharge models. The defect is an internal short circuit that can develop within the high-voltage battery module when the battery is fully charged and the vehicle is parked, with fire as the documented consequence. Volvo instructed owners not to charge the vehicle until the repair was performed. The remedy is battery module replacement and BMS software update at no cost. If you own a 2020-2022 S60 Recharge and have not had this repair performed, contact your Volvo dealer immediately using your VIN to confirm recall status. If your battery symptoms persist after the recall repair, document every dealer visit — post-remedy recurrence is one of the strongest fact patterns for a lemon-law claim.

Why does my Volvo S60 Recharge battery keep dying when I leave it parked for a few days?

The T8 Recharge architecture uses a mid-voltage battery module (MVBM) that bridges the high-voltage and 12V systems. A Battery Management System (BMS) software deficiency prevents the MVBM from properly entering a low-power sleep mode during extended parking, creating a parasitic draw that can drain the 12V auxiliary battery dead within 5-7 days. Owners receive the 'Critical Safety Fault Battery' warning and often require a tow. Replacing only the 12V battery provides temporary relief because the parasitic draw recurs with the next extended parking event. The correct repair requires a BMS firmware update; if the MVBM itself was damaged by repeated deep discharge, it also needs replacement. Plug the car into a Level 1 or Level 2 charger when parking for more than five days as a mitigation.

Why does my Volvo S60 Recharge backup camera not work when I put it in reverse?

Volvo issued two successive recalls for this exact problem. Recall 25V282000 (May 2025) covered 2023-2025 S60 Recharge vehicles where the backup camera image fails to display in reverse — a violation of federal rear-visibility standard FMVSS 111. However, at least one NHTSA complainant (ODI 11668530) reported the recall software update (version 3.5.24) actually made the camera fail more frequently, from monthly to weekly. Volvo subsequently issued Recall 25V908000 (December 2025) to supersede and correct the first fix. If your 2023-2025 S60 Recharge still shows a blank or unavailable backup camera after the 25V282000 update, ask your dealer specifically about the 25V908000 remedy. Keep a record of every visit where the camera was inoperable; repeated failures after a recall remedy is applied constitute strong evidence for a Song-Beverly claim.

Why does my Volvo S60 Recharge jerk or lunge when I shift from reverse to drive?

This is a documented T8 PHEV-specific transmission behavior. When the S60 Recharge operates in reverse in electric-only mode and the driver shifts to Drive, the Aisin 8-speed automatic's Transmission Control Module must re-engage the combustion drivetrain. A calibration deficiency causes the vehicle to hesitate — sometimes for several seconds — and then launch abruptly as the torque-converter and electro-hydraulic clutch engage simultaneously. No fault code is stored during the event, making dealer duplication difficult. NHTSA ODI 11492820 documents this exact pattern. Volvo has issued a TCM software calibration update to smooth the EV-to-ICE handoff. If you experience this after the calibration, request valve-body inspection. Video the event in a parking lot and bring it to the dealer with the NHTSA complaint number for documentation.

Does the Volvo S60 Recharge qualify as a lemon in California?

Whether any specific S60 Recharge qualifies under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act depends on your individual repair history, not the vehicle's recall list alone. That said, the S60 Recharge has a particularly strong profile for Song-Beverly claims: ten active NHTSA recalls, a widely documented infotainment-freeze defect that dealers have failed to resolve permanently across multiple software updates, a high-voltage battery fire recall, two successive rearview-camera recalls, and 12V battery drain issues requiring repeat tows. If your S60 Recharge has been in for the same defect three or more times without a lasting fix, or has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days, you may have a valid claim. Gather every repair order, tow receipt, loaner record, and dealer communication and contact a lemon-law attorney for a free case evaluation.
