Engine Internal Failure Risk - Stall, Power Loss, or Fire
engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall
2019-2024 Toyota RAV4: 14 NHTSA recalls covering airbags, backup camera, transmission shift shock, oil consumption, and brake hardware. Free CA case review.
You bought the most popular SUV in America because the name on the badge was supposed to mean something. Toyota. Reliable. Dependable. The kind of vehicle you stop thinking about after you sign the papers. Instead, many 2019-2024 RAV4 owners have found themselves back at the dealership, sometimes four, five, six times, for problems that Toyota engineers had already documented in internal service bulletins before those owners ever took delivery. The transmission jerks when you pull out of a parking lot. The engine quietly burns a quart of oil between oil changes while the oil level warning light stays dark. The pre-collision system slams on the brakes at 65 miles per hour on an empty freeway. The infotainment screen freezes mid-navigation on the way to an appointment. The XA50-generation RAV4 launched in 2019 with a new 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and a new safety suite. Each of those major new components became the subject of Toyota's own technical service bulletins within the first two model years. Through June 2026, Toyota has issued fourteen formal NHTSA recalls on this generation, covering backup cameras, airbag suppression, suspension arm cracking, electric power steering loss, fuel pump failure, and loose brake hardware, plus multiple TSBs acknowledging shift shock, oil consumption, phantom braking, wind noise, and infotainment freezes. If you feel like your RAV4 has spent more time in the service lane than on the road, the recall and TSB record confirms that you are not imagining it. California law has an answer for that situation.
The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
This recall covers an illegible load capacity label on certain 2019 RAV4 vehicles distributed through Gulf States Toyota. While the label defect alone is unlikely to constitute a substantial impairment under Song-Beverly, it is relevant if a dealer's repeated failure to provide the corrected label — after documented repair attempts — becomes part of a broader pattern of unresolved warranty issues. In California, even a label-related recall that requires multiple dealer visits to apply the remedy can count toward repair attempts when combined with other open nonconformities on the same vehicle.
GST will notify owners, and dealers will provide corrected load carrying capacity modification labels, free of charge. The recall began May 24, 2019. Owners may contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. GST's number for this recall is 19R1.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 19V503000 covers certain 2019 RAV4 vehicles distributed through Southeast Toyota with an incorrect load carrying capacity label on floor-mat-equipped vehicles. Like iss-01, the label defect itself is not a primary lemon-law driver, but a dealer's inability to permanently correct the label across multiple visits — particularly when the vehicle also has other open nonconformities — can contribute to a Song-Beverly claim. Owners in the Southeast Toyota distribution zone should confirm the corrected label was properly applied and documented on a repair order.
SET will notify owners and provide a corrected label for placement over the inaccurate label, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. SET's number for this recall is SET19A.
backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted
Recall 19V576000 covers a damaged electrical connector that prevents the backup camera from activating in reverse, violating FMVSS 111. A non-functioning backup camera is a safety defect under California law, and any dealer visit to address this issue — including display unit replacement — counts as a documented repair attempt. If the camera fails to activate after the recall repair, or if a second display-related camera failure occurs (see also iss-14 covering the 2025 Panoramic View Monitor recall), owners have grounds to assert that the backup camera system has been subject to repeated unsuccessful repairs under Song-Beverly.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the back-up camera system and replace the audio display unit, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began September 27, 2019. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is K0N.
engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall
Recall 20V064000 addresses casting porosity in A25A-FKS 2.5L engines that can cause coolant or oil loss, engine damage, and in worst cases engine fire — a confirmed catastrophic risk. Toyota's remedy is engine block or full engine replacement. If the replacement engine later develops oil consumption issues (as documented in TSB T-SB-0152-22 and iss-15), owners have successive warranty repair claims on the same powertrain system. Under Song-Beverly, two or more engine-related repair attempts within the warranty period on the same vehicle — particularly when one involves a recall and a subsequent defect emerges — provides a strong basis for a buyback or replacement demand.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the engine including the engine block, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began April 3, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TA04. Lex
front suspension noise; stabilizer bar loose; vehicle pulls or clunks
Recall 20V286000 covers cracked front lower suspension arms that can separate from the wheel assembly, causing sudden loss of vehicle control — a direct safety hazard. Under Song-Beverly, a safety recall that requires physical component replacement is among the strongest lemon-law fact patterns: the manufacturer's own recall notice confirms the defect, the hazard is loss of steering control, and any repeat symptom or failed remedy after the recall repair triggers additional warranty repair obligations. Owners should retain their recall completion documentation and monitor for any returning suspension noises or handling changes.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace both front lower suspension arms, free of charge. This recall began August 10, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's interim numbers for this recall are 20TB08 / 20TA08.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 20V373000 covers water ingress into the electric power steering gearbox causing loss of EPS assist — a direct loss of steering control at speed. This is a paradigmatic Song-Beverly safety defect: the manufacturer acknowledged the hazard, issued a full gearbox replacement remedy, and the consequence of an unresolved repair is loss of steering at highway speed. If a RAV4 owner experiences recurring steering stiffness or EPS warning lights after the recall gearbox replacement, those subsequent visits represent continued nonconformity and support a buyback demand.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the power steering gear box, free of charge. The recall began August 17, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TB11 / 20TA11.
engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
Recall 20V682000 covers a low-pressure fuel pump impeller that can deform and cause engine stall while driving — a loss-of-motive-power event at highway speed. Toyota's remedy is fuel pump assembly replacement. Under Song-Beverly, an engine stall that occurs while the vehicle is in motion constitutes a safety defect regardless of whether a crash results. Owners who experienced stall events before the recall was remedied, or whose vehicles stalled after a completed recall repair, should document those incidents as evidence of a nonconformity that was not corrected within a reasonable number of attempts.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly with an improved one, free of charge. Owners of specific models were notified that remedy parts were available starting January 21, 2021. Owners of other models will be notified as remedy parts become available. Remedy parts
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 20V734000 addresses damage to breakaway pins in the steering column — components designed to absorb crash energy — that may prevent proper airbag deployment in a collision. This is a safety-critical defect tied to the vehicle's occupant protection system. The remedy is full steering column replacement. Under California Song-Beverly, a defect that affects airbag deployment is classified as a safety nonconformity, and a vehicle that requires steering column replacement under recall — particularly if returned for related electrical or ADAS symptoms afterward — has a documented repair history supporting a claim.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering column, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 20TB17/20TA17.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 22V519000 covers 2022 RAV4 vehicles where front passenger seat internal interference causes the Occupant Classification System sensor to incorrectly classify an adult passenger as absent, suppressing the passenger airbag in a crash. The remedy is seat inspection and repair at dealer. This defect is latent — the vehicle shows no warning light and drives normally — but poses a life-threatening risk in a collision. Under Song-Beverly, a latent safety defect confirmed by recall is treated as a nonconformity from the time of purchase; owners whose vehicles required multiple dealer visits for seat inspection and remedy have a compensable claim even if the vehicle was never involved in a crash.
Dealers will inspect and repair the front passenger seat, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 2, 2022. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's number for this recall is 22TA08.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 23V485000 covers 2023 RAV4 vehicles with accessory 17-inch black alloy wheels where valve stems may have been improperly installed or damaged during wheel fitment, posing a risk of tire deflation. Combined in this recall with a load capacity label issue (paralleling iss-01 and iss-02), the valve stem defect is the primary safety concern. Sudden tire deflation at highway speed can cause loss of vehicle control. Owners whose recall remedy visit required multiple attempts to obtain correct replacement parts — or who experienced a flat tire attributable to the defective valve stem before the recall was completed — have a documented safety repair history.
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the wheel valve stems and replace the load carrying capacity modification labels, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on August 18, 2023. Owners may contact GST customer service at 1-800-444-1074. GST's number for this recall is 23R1
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 23V865000 is the largest OCS recall for this platform, covering 2020-2021 RAV4 across a broad range of Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The OCS sensor may fail to correctly identify an adult in the front passenger seat, causing the passenger airbag to be suppressed during a crash. Toyota's phased remedy notification runs through January 2026 — meaning some 2020-2021 RAV4 owners may still be awaiting remedy parts. Under Song-Beverly, a safety defect that has not been remedied because parts are unavailable — particularly one involving airbag suppression — gives the owner grounds to demand a buyback while awaiting remedy, as the vehicle remains in a non-conforming condition during the wait.
Dealers will inspect and replace the sensor as necessary, free of charge. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed in February 2024. Some final remedy owner letters were mailed October 31, 2024. Letters will continue to be mailed in phases through January 2026. Owners may cont
brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light
Recall 24V911000 covers 2024 RAV4 vehicles where loose bolts on the front brake caliper mounting bracket and wheel hub bearing can result in damaged brake hose or, in the most serious scenario, wheel detachment — a catastrophic road hazard risk. Toyota's remedy is dealer inspection and bolt torque verification. Under Song-Beverly, wheel detachment risk is among the most severe defect categories; the manufacturer's own recall notice establishes the defect and its consequences. A 2024 RAV4 owner who returns for any brake-related symptom after the recall remedy has a strong lemon-law foundation given the severity of the original defect.
Dealers will inspect and tighten the front brake caliper mounting bracket and hub bearing bolts, as necessary, free of charge. In addition, any damaged components will be replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2025. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at
brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light
Recall 25V595000 addresses a software defect in the instrument panel cluster that may display erroneous brake warning messages or fail to display correct warning information on 2023-2024 RAV4 vehicles. Toyota's remedy is an OTA software update for non-PHEV vehicles and dealer software or hardware replacement for PHEVs. While this is primarily a display/software nonconformity rather than an active brake failure, repeated incorrect warning displays can cause owner distress, unnecessary dealer visits, and can mask real brake faults. Under Song-Beverly, multiple OTA or dealer visits to address the same instrument panel defect count as repair attempts toward the lemon-law presumption.
Dealers will update the instrument panel software over-the-air (OTA) for non-PHEV vehicles, free of charge. For PHEV vehicles, dealers will inspect the instrument panel assembly, and either replace it, or update the software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed December 5, 2025. Additional let
backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted
Recall 25V744000 covers a software error in the Panoramic View Monitor system that can cause the rearview camera image to be unavailable when the vehicle is shifted into reverse, violating FMVSS 111. This is the second backup camera recall for the XA50 platform (see also iss-03, covering 19V576000 on 2019 models). Owners of 2023-2024 RAV4 vehicles with PVM who experience recurring camera blackouts after the software update recall repair — or who have had the camera system serviced multiple times — have a clear pattern of repeated repair attempts on a safety-critical system, which is strong evidence for a Song-Beverly claim.
Dealers will update the parking assist software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed January 2, 2026. Owners may contact Toyota's customer service at 1-800-331-4331. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 25TB13 and 25LB06. Subaru's number for this recall is WRE25.
engine burns oil faster than normal; low oil warning light; blue or white exhaust smoke; oil level drops between changes; need to add oil between service intervals; catalytic converter damage from burning oil
Under Song-Beverly, an engine defect that requires multiple warranty repair visits — including a protracted oil consumption test cycle spanning three service intervals — can establish the 'reasonable number of attempts' threshold. California courts have found that a manufacturer's own structured test protocol, when required across multiple appointments, counts toward repair attempts. If the engine is replaced or rebuilt under warranty and oil consumption recurs, subsequent visits further strengthen a buyback claim.
Toyota-required oil consumption test (three 1,200-mile intervals); if confirmed excessive, short block or piston/ring assembly replacement under warranty (powertrain warranty). TSB T-SB-0152-22 governs authorization procedure.
harsh jerk or lurch when pulling away from a stop; transmission hesitates before engaging; clunk or thud from drivetrain at low speed; feels like slipping or bucking during 1-2 shift; shudder during light acceleration; symptom worse when cold
Shift shock from a stop is a drivability defect that substantially impairs the vehicle's use under Song-Beverly. If the dealer performs a TCM reflash and the symptom returns — or if the valve body is replaced and shifting remains rough — each subsequent repair visit counts toward the presumption threshold. California lemon-law claimants with two or more repair orders for this specific symptom, with the vehicle out of service, have a strong factual foundation for a buyback demand.
TCM software reflash (SFT update) per TSB T-SB-0007-20; if symptom persists post-update, valve body inspection and replacement; in severe cases, transmission replacement.
car brakes suddenly without obstacle; forward collision warning triggers on empty road; vehicle decelerates unexpectedly on highway; PCS warning light illuminates; brakes slam on under overpass or in light rain; ADAS false alert at speed
An ADAS system that applies emergency braking without a genuine hazard creates a rear-end collision risk and constitutes a substantial impairment to the safe use of the vehicle. Under Song-Beverly, a safety-related defect of this nature that is not resolved after two or more repair attempts triggers the lemon-law presumption. Owners who have experienced multiple phantom-braking events after software updates should preserve dealer repair orders, dashcam footage, and any tow or incident reports as evidence of non-conformity.
Dealer software update to radar ECU and camera ECU per TSB T-SB-0006-20; radar recalibration post-update. Persistent cases may require radar unit replacement.
loud wind noise from front door at 55+ mph; whistling or whooshing sound near A-pillar or door glass; noise louder in rain or wind; door seal appears flush but noise persists; dealer replaces weatherstrip but noise returns
Wind noise that cannot be resolved after multiple dealer visits constitutes a defect under Song-Beverly even though it is categorized as cosmetic. California courts have recognized that a recurring noise defect requiring repeated repairs — particularly when the manufacturer issues a TSB acknowledging the root cause — supports a lemon-law claim if the nonconformity substantially impairs value or use. Three or more repair orders for wind noise on the same door, with no permanent resolution, is a meaningful pattern.
Re-seat or replace door glass run channel weatherstrip; adjust door glass vertical/lateral position using alignment service tool; in severe cases, replace door glass run channel assembly.
infotainment screen goes black while driving; navigation freezes mid-route; head unit reboots by itself; backup camera unavailable due to screen freeze; Apple CarPlay / Android Auto drops connection; audio cuts out; touchscreen unresponsive
When the Entune head unit freezes, the backup camera becomes inaccessible while the vehicle is in reverse — creating a safety overlap with the rearview camera recalls affecting this platform (iss-03, iss-14). Under Song-Beverly, an infotainment defect that disables the backup camera or CarPlay guidance, if unresolved after two or more attempts, may support a claim because it substantially impairs the vehicle's value as advertised. Owners with software update repair orders who experience recurring freezes after each update have a documented pattern of non-conformity.
Head unit software update via USB update kit or dealer tool per TSB T-SB-0137-21; if freeze persists after latest software version, head unit replacement.
clicking or grinding noise behind dashboard; driver or passenger temperature zone stuck on maximum heat or cold; AC blows one temperature regardless of setting; dual-zone climate control unresponsive; noise worsens when adjusting temperature
HVAC failure that prevents temperature control in California's climate constitutes a functional nonconformity under Song-Beverly, particularly when it occurs within the bumper-to-bumper warranty period. Owners whose dealers diagnose a stripped actuator but fail to resolve the clicking or temperature control failure on the first visit — and who return for the same symptom — are building a warranty repair history that may support a lemon claim, especially if combined with other open issues on the same vehicle.
Actuator replacement (typically $150-300 in parts; labor-intensive due to dashboard removal required on some configurations); dealer diagnosis via HVAC self-test mode.
water dripping inside cabin after rain; wet carpet in front footwells; moisture in headliner; water stain along A-pillar trim; mold or mildew smell inside vehicle; sunroof appears sealed but water enters cabin
Interior water intrusion that soaks carpet or causes mold growth constitutes a defect substantially impairing the vehicle's use and value under Song-Beverly. California courts have supported lemon-law claims where water intrusion recurs after the dealer's drain-clearing repair, because the reoccurrence demonstrates the fix was not adequate. Owners should document each wet-cabin episode with photos, timestamps, and repair orders noting the mileage and weather conditions.
Dealer clears drain tubes with compressed air or snake tool; re-routes improperly kinked tubes. In cases of prolonged water damage, headliner or carpet replacement required. Reoccurrence is common if root kink is not permanently corrected.
power liftgate stops mid-travel; liftgate reverses direction without obstacle; liftgate button unresponsive on key fob or interior switch; liftgate opens but will not close automatically; grinding noise from liftgate strut; liftgate warning light on
A power liftgate that intermittently fails to open or close substantially impairs a vehicle's utility — particularly for owners who rely on hands-free operation for cargo loading. Under Song-Beverly, intermittent electrical defects that evade dealer diagnosis ('cannot duplicate') are among the most common lemon-law patterns. Owners should note the ambient temperature, humidity, and exact sequence of events each time the liftgate fails, and request that the dealer attempt to reproduce the fault under similar conditions.
Dealer diagnosis via scan tool to identify actuator or sensor fault code; replacement of liftgate actuator motor or obstacle-detection sensor; inspect and clean wiring connectors at hinge area.
Toyota Safety Connect app shows no connection; Automatic Collision Notification unavailable; Stolen Vehicle Locator disabled; Emergency Assistance Button does not connect; Safety Connect subscription active but services non-functional
Toyota advertised Safety Connect — including Automatic Collision Notification and Emergency Assistance — as standard equipment on 2019 RAV4 vehicles. The permanent loss of these services due to 3G network shutdown may constitute a breach of express warranty under California law, as the vehicle no longer conforms to Toyota's written representations at point of sale. Owners who purchased Safety Connect subscriptions and cannot use the service after the sunset have a distinct warranty argument separate from Song-Beverly, though the two claims may overlap.
Hardware upgrade to 4G LTE TCU at dealer (Toyota offered discounted upgrade pricing); no free remedy was mandated. Owners who did not act before the 3G sunset permanently lost Safety Connect service on the original hardware.

Every item below comes from this vehicle's documented defects. The more you recognize, the more a free case review is worth your time.
Under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, Toyota must repair any defect that impairs the use, value, or safety of your RAV4 within a reasonable number of attempts. If Toyota cannot fix the problem, you may be entitled to a full replacement or cash buyback — including reimbursement of your down payment, monthly payments, and incidental costs.
California law presumes your vehicle is a lemon if the same nonconformity required repair four or more times, or the vehicle was out of service 30 or more cumulative days, within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles. The presumption is a floor: courts have found violations with fewer attempts when the defect is safety-related.
For RAV4 owners, the strongest Song-Beverly patterns are: transmission shift shock recurring after a TCM reflash; oil consumption confirmed across multiple test visits still requiring engine work; phantom braking returning after a TSS 2.0 software update; and airbag OCS recalls with no remedy parts available, leaving your vehicle in a known non-conforming safety state. Toyota's own TSBs establish the defect exists; your repair orders establish it was not fixed. California law requires Toyota to pay your attorney’s fees if you prevail.
“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.
Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.
Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.
Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.
Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.
Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.
Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.
The Toyota dealer says it cannot duplicate your RAV4's problem. Here is what to do.
1. Put it in writing. Before you leave, confirm the advisor wrote the exact symptom on the repair order — not 'checked vehicle, no fault found' but your actual complaint: 'transmission jerks when pulling from stop,' 'pre-collision braked on empty freeway,' 'backup camera blank in reverse.' That written description is your legal record.
2. For shift shock: ask specifically whether TSB T-SB-0007-20 has been applied. Request a printout confirming the current TCM software version before and after any update.
3. For phantom braking: note road conditions, weather, time, speed, and trigger location. NHTSA PE23-020 is open — file a complaint at nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem so your incident is on record.
4. For oil consumption: ask the advisor to open a warranty claim under TSB T-SB-0152-22. This is a three-interval test at 1,200-mile increments. Write starting oil level and mileage on each repair order. Document any refusal to run the test.
5. Video evidence. For intermittent issues — liftgate failure, camera blackout, screen freeze — record on your phone the moment it occurs. A dated video is far more persuasive than a verbal description.
6. Return every time. Under Song-Beverly, each visit for the same unresolved symptom counts as a repair attempt. Do not accept a 'no fault found' result and stop coming back.
The 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 XA50 carries a heavier recall and TSB burden than its reputation suggests. Fourteen NHTSA recalls — covering airbag suppression, backup camera failure, fuel pump stall, EPS loss, and wheel detachment — document serious safety issues across the full run. Beyond recalls, the UA80F transmission shift shock is platform-wide on early models, the A25A-FKS oil consumption is shared with the Camry and has prompted class-action filings, and TSS 2.0 phantom braking is under active NHTSA investigation. The documentation for your complaint likely already exists in Toyota's own files. If your RAV4 has had repeated dealer visits, that is a pattern — and California law is designed for exactly that.

If your 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 has been back to the dealer two or more times for the same problem — a lurching transmission, oil consumption, phantom braking, or an airbag warning that keeps returning — you may have California lemon-law options. Margarian Law offers a free case review and handles thousands of lemon-law cases. No cost to you unless we recover.
The harsh jerk or hesitation when pulling away from a stop on 2019-2021 RAV4 models is a known defect in the UA80F eight-speed automatic transmission. Toyota acknowledged the problem in Service Bulletin T-SB-0007-20 (March 2020), which prescribes a Transmission Control Module software update (SFT reflash) to correct the shift calibration. The update reduces how aggressively the transmission engages the clutch pack from rest. If your dealer has not yet applied this update, ask them to check your current TCM software version and apply the latest revision. In cases where the reflash does not permanently resolve the symptom, Toyota's bulletin also authorizes valve body inspection and replacement. Bring the vehicle back each time the symptom recurs and document each visit on a repair order — if the problem persists after two or more repair attempts within the warranty period, you may have grounds for a California lemon-law claim.
Yes. The A25A-FKS 2.5-liter Dynamic Force engine used in 2019-2023 RAV4 models — the same engine used in the Camry and Avalon — has a documented oil consumption problem. Toyota issued Service Bulletin T-SB-0152-22 (September 2022) confirming that piston rings may not seal correctly, allowing oil to burn in the combustion chamber. The TSB requires a three-interval oil consumption test (measured every 1,200 miles over 3,600 miles) before Toyota will authorize a warranty repair. If consumption exceeds Toyota's threshold, the remedy is short block or piston ring replacement. Owners report that dealers sometimes decline to initiate the test or claim consumption is within spec even when oil level drops noticeably between services. If your RAV4 needs oil between changes, ask your dealer to open a warranty claim under TSB T-SB-0152-22 and document each visit. Three or more visits for the same oil consumption issue within the powertrain warranty period may support a California lemon-law buyback claim.
Unexpected automatic braking on 2019-2022 RAV4 models is caused by the Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 Pre-Collision System misidentifying road objects as collision threats. The millimeter-wave radar and forward-facing camera may incorrectly read overpass structures, metal bridge expansion joints, oncoming headlights, or lane markings and apply emergency braking. Toyota issued TSB T-SB-0006-20 in February 2020 prescribing radar ECU and camera ECU software updates. NHTSA opened Preliminary Evaluation PE23-020 in April 2023 after receiving more than 60 complaints on this pattern. If your RAV4 has experienced a phantom braking event, file a complaint at nhtsa.gov and bring the vehicle to your dealer — ask specifically whether TSB T-SB-0006-20 has been applied and whether the radar was recalibrated after the software update. Document the date, road conditions, speed, and location of each event. An ADAS system that applies emergency braking without an obstacle is a safety nonconformity; two or more dealer visits for this symptom within the warranty period may support a lemon-law claim.
As of June 2026, the 2019-2024 Toyota RAV4 (XA50 generation, ICE-Gas) has been subject to fourteen NHTSA recalls. These cover a wide range of safety-critical systems: two load capacity label recalls affecting Gulf States and Southeast Toyota distributors (19V244000, 19V503000); a backup camera connector failure (19V576000); engine casting porosity with fire and stall risk on 2019-2020 models (20V064000); front suspension arm cracking (20V286000); electric power steering water ingress (20V373000); low-pressure fuel pump stall risk (20V682000); steering column damage affecting airbag deployment (20V734000); two occupant classification system recalls suppressing the passenger airbag (22V519000, 23V865000); a 2023 tire valve stem recall (23V485000); loose front brake caliper bolts with wheel detachment risk on 2024 models (24V911000); an instrument panel software brake warning error (25V595000); and a Panoramic View Monitor backup camera software failure (25V744000). Owners can verify recall completion status for their specific VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Yes. Entune 3.0 and Toyota Audio Multimedia head unit freezing, black screens, and spontaneous reboots are documented defects affecting 2019-2022 RAV4 models. Toyota issued Service Bulletin T-SB-0137-21 in July 2021 prescribing head unit software updates to address the freeze and reboot cycle. Multiple software revisions were released between 2020 and 2023. If your screen freezes in reverse, the backup camera becomes inaccessible — creating a safety overlap with the two backup camera recalls that also affect this generation. Ask your dealer to install the current software version and provide the version number on your repair order. If the freeze recurs after the update, the head unit itself may require replacement. Each dealer visit for this symptom is a documented repair attempt under California Song-Beverly. Owners with two or more repair orders for head unit freeze or backup camera unavailability — particularly if the vehicle has also been in for recall 19V576000 or 25V744000 on the camera system — may have a lemon-law claim based on the cumulative repair pattern.
Yes, if Toyota has been unable to repair a defect in your RAV4 after a reasonable number of attempts within the warranty period, you may be entitled to a vehicle replacement or full cash buyback under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. California law presumes a vehicle is a lemon if the same defect has required four or more repair attempts, or the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more days during the first 18 months or 18,000 miles. For RAV4 owners, the strongest patterns involve: transmission shift shock that recurs after a TCM reflash; engine oil consumption confirmed across multiple test visits but not resolved; phantom braking that returns after a TSS 2.0 software update; or an airbag occupant classification recall that has not been remedied because parts are unavailable. Toyota's own service bulletins and recall notices establish that these defects are real and acknowledged — your repair orders establish that they were not fixed. A California lemon-law attorney can review your repair orders at no upfront cost; the law requires Toyota to pay your attorney fees if you prevail.
