The overview

What owners are dealing with

You bought a 2021–2024 Nissan Rogue because it promised practicality, advanced technology, and Nissan's signature VC-Turbo variable-compression engine — a powertrain the brand marketed as engineering brilliance. The 12.3-inch NissanConnect screen, ProPILOT Assist, and the smooth Xtronic CVT made the Rogue one of the most feature-rich compact SUVs in its class. For many owners, it has lived up to that promise. For a substantial number, the story has gone differently.

By 2026, Nissan had issued nineteen recall campaigns against the T33 Rogue. The most alarming are recalls 25V437, 26V080, and 26V081 — issued in 2026 — which confirmed that the 1.5-liter KR15DDT VC-Turbo engine has manufacturing defects in its bearings. Bearing failure can breach the engine block, discharge hot oil, and create fire risk. A separate recall confirmed that throttle body gears in the same engine can break, causing sudden loss of drive power.

Hundreds of owners were filing NHTSA complaints before those recalls arrived — describing engine knock, reduced-power warnings at highway speed, and dealers sending them home with only an ECM software flash. The pattern spans every model year: 2022 Rogues with bearing noise at 30,000 miles; 2023 owners reporting dealers denied the recall remedy; 2024 owners experiencing sudden power loss on the freeway. Alongside the engine story, the Rogue carries five seat and seatbelt recalls, three rearview camera campaigns, and growing owner reports of spontaneous rear windshield shattering that Nissan has not addressed with a recall.

Fuel Hose / Lock Ring Not Secured — Leak and Fire Risk — Recall 21V068 (2021)Catastrophic2021
Symptoms

fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V068 covers a fuel hose leak that increases the risk of fire — a confirmed safety defect under Song-Beverly. If the repair was not performed or the vehicle later exhibits fuel odor or stall, the owner has a basis for a repeat-repair claim. Any fire-risk defect that is not permanently resolved after a reasonable number of attempts may entitle the owner to a replacement or refund under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, reposition and secure the fuel hose and lock ring, free of charge. The recall began March 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC791.

Rear Child-Seat Tether Wire Weld Defect — Recall 21V474 (2021)Safety2021
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V474 involves a failure to meet FMVSS 225 child-restraint anchorage requirements — a confirmed safety defect. Under Song-Beverly, a defect that fails to meet a federal safety standard is per se a safety defect qualifying for the Act's protections. If the seatback replacement was not performed or the repair did not restore FMVSS compliance, the owner may pursue a buyback or replacement claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the rear seatbacks as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 30, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC812.

Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Fuel pump failure causing engine stall at speed is a safety defect under Song-Beverly. Recall 21V957 required full pump assembly replacement. Owners who experienced a stall or no-start after the recall remedy should document each visit; repeat stalls after a recall repair are a strong signal of a non-conformity that has not been permanently repaired.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 27, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B8.

Fuel Tank Thin Wall — Puncture and Fire Risk — Recall 22V259 (2022)Catastrophic2022
Symptoms

fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall

Why it matters for your claim

A fuel tank defect that creates fire risk from road debris puncture is a Catastrophic safety defect. Recall 22V259 required full fuel tank assembly replacement for 2022 Rogues. If the recall remedy was not performed, or if a fuel odor or leak occurs after replacement, the owner should document the condition and contact a lemon-law attorney — fire-risk defects that recur after a recall repair are strong Song-Beverly candidates.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the fuel tank assembly and install a new lock ring, gasket, and o-ring seal, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 19, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC887.

Rearview Camera Inoperative — SiriusXM IVI Reboot — Recall 22V527 (2021-2022 Rental Fleet)Safety2021-2022
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

An inoperative rearview camera violates FMVSS 111, a confirmed federal safety standard defect. Recall 22V527 was initially limited to rental-fleet units. Non-rental owners experiencing the same IVI-reboot/camera-blackout symptom should document the failure and may be covered by the expanded recall 22V772 (iss-10). Any denied recall repair should be escalated to Nissan Consumer Affairs and documented in writing.

Typical fix

The Infotainment system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 29, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22A5 PC901 PC

Fuel Tank Punctured During Modification — Leak and Fire Risk — Recall 22V660 (2022)Catastrophic2022
Symptoms

fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall

Why it matters for your claim

A punctured fuel tank from a manufacturing-process error is a confirmed fire-risk defect under Song-Beverly. Recall 22V660 required dealer inspection and tank replacement. Owners who have not received this recall remedy should schedule service immediately; any fuel odor or leak after purported remedy is a basis for a repeat-repair lemon-law claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 23, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC912.

Rear Seatbelt Non-Retraction — FMVSS 208/209 Non-Compliance — Recall 22V666 (2021-2022)Safety2021-2022
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

A seatbelt that fails to retract properly may not restrain occupants in a crash — a confirmed safety defect. Recall 22V666 required dealer inspection and replacement. Under Song-Beverly, a defect tied to a federal safety standard noncompliance is automatically a qualifying defect. Owners should confirm the recall was performed on their specific VIN.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the rear seat belts, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 27, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC915.

IVI System Continuous Reboot — Rearview Camera Blackout — Recall 22V772 (2021-2022)Safety2021-2022
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

This recall addresses the same rearview camera failure pattern as 22V527, expanded to non-rental vehicles. FMVSS 111 noncompliance is a per se safety defect under Song-Beverly. If the IVI software update did not permanently resolve the rearview camera failure, each recurrence is a separate repair attempt — two or more attempts at a safety defect may trigger lemon-law eligibility.

Typical fix

The IVI software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 18, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R22B8, R22C1, and PC923/

Driver Powered Seat Weld Detachment — Seat Frame Unsecured — Recall 23V268 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

An unsecured driver's seat that can detach from the frame during a crash directly impairs crash protection — a safety defect under Song-Beverly. Recall 23V268 required inspection and possible seat frame replacement. If the inspection was performed but the seat subsequently loosens or shows movement, the owner should return to the dealer and document each visit in writing.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect the driver's seat rail clearance, and if necessary, replace the driver's seat cushion frame, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 10, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC9

Rear Seatbelt Anchor Bolt Under-Torqued — FMVSS 208/209/210 — Recall 23V374 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Loose seatbelt anchor fasteners that can fail during a crash are a confirmed safety defect and federal standard noncompliance. Recall 23V374 required bolt tightening and warning label application. Under Song-Beverly, any FMVSS noncompliance qualifies as a safety defect. Owners should verify the recall was completed on their VIN and retain the repair order showing completed work.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and tighten the rear seat belt anchor bolts. Additionally, dealers will apply warning labels to the seat belt attachment points to indicate the bolt size and torque value required for any future seat belt repair. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification lette

Rear Brake Caliper Bushing Missing — Expanded Remedy — Recall 23V791 (2021, Re-Expansion)Safety2021
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V791 is a re-expansion of the same rear brake caliper defect first recalled under 21V286. If your 2021 Rogue was inspected under 21V286 and told 'no replacement needed,' you should now have the 23V791 remedy performed. Two recall campaigns for the same defect — and any interval where the vehicle was driven with a brake fault — strengthens a lemon-law claim for a safety defect with multiple repair attempts.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the left and right rear brake calipers, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 12, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC933. The two vehicles that were previously inspected under recall 2

Driver Airbag Inflator Moisture Contamination — Improper Deployment Risk — Recall 24V154 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

An airbag that may not deploy properly in a crash is a safety defect under Song-Beverly. Recall 24V154 required full airbag assembly replacement. Until replaced, this defect represents a substantial impairment of the vehicle's safety. Owners who experience repeated parts delays or dealer non-performance of the airbag replacement should document each visit and consider a lemon-law consultation.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the front driver's air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PD103, PD104, and PMA34.

Front Seatbelt Pretensioner Manufacturing Defect — Recall 24V156 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

A pretensioner that cannot properly restrain occupants in a crash is a confirmed safety defect and federal standard violation. Recall 24V156 required front seatbelt assembly replacement. Under Song-Beverly, a safety-standard defect entitles the owner to a free repair within a reasonable time. Owners who have not received the recall remedy should contact the dealer immediately and document any delay in parts availability.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the front seat belt assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 26, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PD105.

Rearview Camera Blank Screen — Software Error — Recall 24V748 (2024)Safety2024
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

A rearview camera that displays a blank screen in reverse violates FMVSS 111 — a confirmed federal safety standard defect. Recall 24V748 allowed OTA or dealer IVI update. If the OTA update was not received or the camera blacks out again after the dealer update, each recurrence is a new repair attempt. California owners whose 2024 Rogue has not received this remedy should request the fix in writing.

Typical fix

The in-vehicle infotainment software will be updated by an over-the-air (OTA) software update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 2, 2024. KR15DDT / MR20DD VC-Turbo Engine Bearing Defect — Failure and Fire Risk — Recall 25V437 (2021-2024)Catastrophic2021-2024
Symptoms

engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V437 confirms that VC-Turbo engine bearings may have manufacturing defects causing engine failure and oil discharge — creating fire risk. This is one of the most serious defects on the T33 Rogue. If the ECM software reprogram (the initial recall remedy) does not resolve symptoms, owners should push for an oil-pan inspection and engine replacement per the recall's supplemental remedy. Two failed repair attempts for the same engine defect place the vehicle well within lemon-law territory under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed April 8, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261 or Infiniti's customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R25A8/A9 and R25B1/B2.

KR15DDT VC-Turbo Oil Breakdown / Bearing Seizure — Fire Risk — Recall 26V080 (2023-2024, Expands 25V437)Catastrophic2023-2024
Symptoms

engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 26V080 expands the bearing defect scope to include a separate thermal-breakdown mechanism in the 2023-2024 Rogue's 1.5L engine. Owners covered by both 25V437 and 26V080 have had the same engine defect acknowledged by two separate recall campaigns — a powerful lemon-law fact pattern. Under Song-Beverly, multiple recalls for a single defect within the warranty period may independently support a buyback or replacement claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software, inspect for diagnostic trouble codes, and test drive the vehicle, free of charge. The dealer may also inspect the oil pan for metal debris, and replace the engine if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notificati

Electronic Throttle Body Gear Breakage — Loss of Drive Power — Recall 26V081 (2024)Safety2024
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Throttle body gear failure causing sudden loss of drive power at speed is a safety defect. Recall 26V081 required an ECM reprogram and throttle body replacement as necessary. If a 2024 Rogue owner has experienced 'Engine Malfunction — Power Reduced' warnings or sudden deceleration, this recall should be confirmed completed. Any recurrence after the recall remedy is a basis for a repeat-repair Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will reprogram the engine control module (ECM) software and inspect and replace the electronic throttle body assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 8, 2026. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 800-647-7261. Nissan's numbers for this re

KR15DDT VC-Turbo 1.5L Engine Knock / Bearing Pre-Failure Dismissed by DealerDrivability/Reliability2022-2024
Symptoms

engine knocking or ticking at idle and under load; knock worsens at lower RPMs; variable compression ratio actuator noise documented by dealer but not repaired; engine malfunction warning light illuminated; power reduced unexpectedly; dealer states 'within spec' or closes RO without repair

Why it matters for your claim

When a dealer repeatedly closes a repair order without fixing documented engine knock — especially after the ECM reprogram recall remedy fails to resolve the symptom — each failed visit counts toward the Song-Beverly Act's reasonable-number-of-attempts standard. Owners returning two or more times for the same engine knock may be approaching lemon-law eligibility regardless of whether the dealer characterizes the issue as recall-related.

Typical fix

ECM software reprogram (recall remedy under 25V437/26V080); if knock or metal debris in oil pan found on inspection, engine replacement. Owners reporting new or persistent knock after recall ECM reprogram should demand oil-pan inspection and document each dealer visit with mileage and repair order.

Xtronic CVT Shudder, Surge, and Limp-Mode EngagementSafety2021-2024
Symptoms

CVT shudder or jerking during acceleration; delayed throttle response; vehicle surges then decelerates unexpectedly; 'CVT Service Soon' warning light; transmission fails to engage Drive or Park; vehicle enters limp mode at highway speeds; engine-and-transmission warning lights appear simultaneously

Why it matters for your claim

Limp-mode engagement at highway speed is a safety defect under Song-Beverly because it substantially impairs use and safety. If the CVT symptom recurs after a dealer repair, each return visit strengthens a repeat-repair claim. Owners should obtain written confirmation of the CVT fault code on every repair order.

Typical fix

CVT fluid replacement/flush and TCM software update; if symptom persists, CVT valve body inspection or transmission replacement. Dealers should document all CVT service codes alongside engine codes on the same repair order.

NissanConnect 12.3″ Infotainment Screen Freeze and Wireless CarPlay / Shifter-Indicator FailureFunctional2021-2023
Symptoms

touchscreen freezes or goes black mid-drive; wireless Apple CarPlay disconnects or fails to connect; screen requires vehicle restart to restore; shifter indicator lights (P-R-N-D) fail to illuminate; navigation reboots while in motion; Bluetooth audio drops without warning

Why it matters for your claim

Repeated infotainment failures that prevent rearview camera display implicate FMVSS 111 and may rise to a safety defect under Song-Beverly. If a dealer has reprogrammed the IVI system twice or more without permanently resolving the screen freeze or CarPlay dropout, the owner may qualify for lemon-law relief on a Functional defect with recurring repair attempts.

Typical fix

IVI software update (OTA where available, or dealer flash); for shifter indicator failure, inspect wiring harness per NTB21-069A. Rearview-camera-related reboots may be resolved by recall remedies under 22V527/22V772 for affected model years.

ProPILOT Assist Phantom Braking / Emergency-Brake System LockupSafety2021-2023
Symptoms

vehicle suddenly brakes hard without driver input at highway speeds; 'collision warning' activates on clear road; car slows to near-stop on freeway creating rear-end crash risk; emergency braking system illuminated for 90+ minutes; vehicle unable to move after ADAS lockup; dash flashes 'system malfunction' and 'maintenance needed'; ADAS shuts down multiple safety systems simultaneously

Why it matters for your claim

Phantom braking at highway speed creates an imminent crash risk and qualifies as a safety defect under Song-Beverly. A single confirmed phantom-braking incident — particularly one that causes the dealer to document an ADAS fault — can constitute a substantial impairment. Two or more visits for the same ADAS fault should trigger a lemon-law consultation.

Typical fix

ADAS sensor calibration; ProPILOT radar unit inspection/replacement; software update to ADAS control module. During an active ADAS lockup, owners should safely stop the vehicle, turn off the ignition, and wait 60 seconds before restart.

Rear Tempered Windshield Spontaneous Shattering Without ImpactSafety2021-2023
Symptoms

loud explosion-like bang from rear of vehicle; rear windshield shatters completely while parked or driving; glass rains inward onto rear seat occupants; no road debris or impact involved; occurs in temperature extremes and mild weather; dealer denies warranty coverage citing 'impact'

Why it matters for your claim

Spontaneous rear windshield shattering with glass entering the occupant compartment is a safety defect. If the dealer replaces the glass and it shatters again — or refuses to cover the first replacement — the owner may have a Song-Beverly claim for a defect that substantially impairs safety and has not been permanently repaired.

Typical fix

Rear windshield replacement (typically at owner expense absent warranty or goodwill coverage). Owners should document dealer refusal with a written repair order noting 'no warranty coverage' and file an NHTSA complaint. Multiple filings may support a future investigation.

EPS / Intelligent ADAS Steering Intervention or Complete Power-Steering Loss at SpeedSafety2021
Symptoms

steering wheel turns sharply left or right without driver input; cannot override steering for 5–10 seconds; complete loss of power-assisted steering at highway speed; heavy steering requires significant physical force; ADAS driver-assistance light illuminated; vehicle temporarily uncontrollable in traffic

Why it matters for your claim

Loss of steering control at highway speed is among the most serious safety defects under Song-Beverly. A single incident that generates a dealer repair order — even if the dealer cannot duplicate it — combined with an NHTSA complaint ODI number constitutes strong documentation for a lemon-law claim. Owners should file an NHTSA complaint immediately after any steering-loss event.

Typical fix

ADAS steering module software update or replacement; EPS control unit inspection. Owners experiencing steering takeover should disengage ProPILOT Assist immediately and have the vehicle towed rather than driven if EPS has failed entirely.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1790 et seq.) may apply to your Nissan Rogue if a warranty defect was not repaired after a reasonable number of attempts. This is general information as of 2026 — not legal advice; no attorney-client relationship is formed.

You may qualify if: (a) you purchased or leased the vehicle in California; (b) the defect appeared during the warranty period; and (c) the same defect was attempted two or more times for a safety issue — or four or more times for other defects — without permanent resolution, or the vehicle was out of service for more than 30 cumulative days.

For the T33 Rogue, the confirmed engine bearing defect (recalls 25V437 / 26V080) is a safety defect. If the ECM reprogram failed to resolve knock and the vehicle returned to the dealer, you may be at the two-attempt threshold. Phantom braking (ProPILOT Assist), rearview camera blackouts (FMVSS 111 violation), and throttle body gear failure (sudden power loss) each qualify as safety defects. The rear windshield spontaneous shattering has no recall, but dealer refusal to repair a warranty defect may still trigger Song-Beverly rights.

If your vehicle qualifies, you may be entitled to a replacement or a full purchase-price refund minus a mileage offset. Nissan must pay your attorney's fees if you prevail. California consumers cannot waive these rights. Consult a qualified attorney to evaluate your specific repair history.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Nissan Rogue specifically

1. Record before you go. Use your phone to video the symptom — engine knock at idle, warning lights, or the rearview screen going black. Timestamp the clip. This is your evidence if the dealer marks the repair order 'unable to duplicate.'

2. Cite the specific recall remedy. If your Rogue received an ECM reprogram under 25V437 or 26V080 and knock persists, tell the service advisor: 'The recall's secondary remedy requires an oil-pan inspection for metal debris and engine replacement if found. I am requesting that inspection today.' Ask for it in writing on the repair order.

3. Demand the complaint appears on the RO. Even when the dealer cannot replicate the fault, the repair order must record your complaint with the mileage at drop-off. Say: 'I need the RO to state I reported engine knock / phantom braking / rearview camera failure at X miles.' A 'cannot duplicate' note is still a documented visit.

4. Request the DTC scan printout. Diagnostic codes are the paper trail. For the engine bearing issue, variable-compression-ratio or oil-pressure codes matter. For ProPILOT phantom braking, request the event data recorder readout from the braking event.

5. Count your visits. Song-Beverly's reasonable-number-of-attempts standard is generally two visits for a safety defect or four for other defects. Visits where the dealer finds 'nothing wrong' count toward the tally.

6. Escalate to Nissan Consumer Affairs in writing. Call 800-647-7261, get a case number, and follow up by email or certified letter. Written manufacturer notice is often a prerequisite for a lemon-law demand letter.

7. File an NHTSA complaint. Visit nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem. For the rear windshield issue — no recall issued yet — your complaint may contribute to a future investigation.

Our take

The 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue has an unusually dense recall record for a compact SUV — nineteen campaigns in four model years, culminating in confirmed engine bearing defects that create fire risk. The VC-Turbo engine was Nissan's marquee technology differentiator; it has become the vehicle's most consequential liability. What concerns us most is not the recall itself but the post-recall dismissal pattern: owners with persistent knock are being sent home with only an ECM flash rather than the oil-pan inspection and engine replacement the recall explicitly permits. That gap — between what Nissan's own remedy allows and what dealers are performing — is where lemon-law cases are built.

FAQ

Nissan Rogue lemon-law questions

Is there a recall for the Nissan Rogue engine bearing failure?

Yes. NHTSA recalls 25V437 (issued April 2026) and 26V080 confirm that 2021-2024 Nissan Rogues equipped with the 1.5L KR15DDT or 2.0L MR20DD VC-Turbo engines have manufacturing defects in their engine bearings. Bearing failure can breach the engine block, discharge hot oil, and increase the risk of an engine fire. The initial remedy is an ECM software reprogram; Nissan's recall documentation also requires dealers to inspect the oil pan for metal debris and replace the engine if necessary. Owners who received only an ECM flash and still hear engine knock should return to the dealer and request the oil-pan inspection. Each failed repair visit counts toward a potential Song-Beverly lemon-law claim under California law. Source: recalls 25V437 / 26V080.

Why does my Nissan Rogue say 'Engine Malfunction Power Reduced' and slow down?

The 'Engine Malfunction — Power Reduced Service Now' message in 2022-2024 Rogues indicates the ECM detected a fault in the 1.5L VC-Turbo and entered limp mode. This is consistent with the engine bearing defect confirmed by recalls 25V437 and 26V080 — the ECM cuts power when it detects oil pressure or VC-Turbo actuator anomalies. If your Rogue shows this warning: (1) schedule a dealer visit; (2) ask the dealer to log the warning on the repair order; (3) confirm recalls 25V437 and 26V080 are completed on your VIN. If this recurs, consult a lemon-law attorney.

Why did my 2023 Nissan Rogue rear window shatter by itself?

Over 100 NHTSA complaints across 2021-2023 Rogues describe the rear tempered windshield shattering spontaneously — without road debris, while parked or at low speed. Nissan has not issued a recall as of June 2026. Dealers frequently deny warranty coverage, citing impact damage. Owners should: (1) photograph the damage before cleanup; (2) obtain a written repair order; (3) file an NHTSA complaint at nhtsa.gov; (4) consult a lemon-law attorney if coverage is denied — a defect appearing within the warranty period should qualify under Song-Beverly.

Is the 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue a lemon under California law?

Whether your specific Rogue qualifies as a lemon depends on your individual repair history. Under California's Song-Beverly Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1790 et seq.), a vehicle may qualify if a warranty defect was not repaired after a reasonable number of attempts — generally two or more attempts for a safety defect, four or more for others. The T33 Rogue has nineteen NHTSA recall campaigns, including confirmed engine bearing defects (recalls 25V437 / 26V080) that create fire risk. Owners who have returned to the dealer two or more times for engine knock, phantom braking, or recurring rearview camera failure — and are still experiencing the problem — may have a strong claim. A free case review with a qualified California lemon-law attorney is the fastest way to evaluate your situation.

My Nissan Rogue braked hard on its own — is that a recall?

Sudden hard braking without driver input — phantom braking — has been reported by 2021 and 2023 Rogue owners via the ProPILOT Assist forward-collision system. NHTSA complaints describe the vehicle decelerating from 55 MPH without warning, nearly causing rear-end collisions. As of June 2026, no recall addresses ProPILOT phantom braking on the T33 Rogue specifically. Phantom braking at highway speed is a safety defect under Song-Beverly. If this has happened more than once, or a dealer documented an ADAS fault code, you may have grounds for a lemon-law claim. Document every incident with date, speed, and location.

What should I do if the Nissan dealer says they cannot fix my engine knock?

If the dealer diagnosed engine knock and sent you home with only an ECM update under recalls 25V437 / 26V080, you have options. First, return and request a written oil-pan inspection for metal debris — it is part of the recall remedy. Second, ensure every visit appears on a repair order showing mileage and your complaint, even if the dealer writes 'cannot duplicate.' Third, escalate to Nissan Consumer Affairs at 800-647-7261 in writing. After two visits for the same knock, Song-Beverly may entitle you to a replacement or refund. Most lemon-law attorneys offer free reviews and collect fees only if they win.
