The overview

What owners are dealing with

You bought the Nissan Rogue because the numbers made sense — America's best-selling SUV, respectable fuel economy, a family-friendly interior, and a price that left money in the budget. What the window sticker did not tell you is that the Rogue's second generation (2014-2020, internal code T32) carries a recall and defect record that now spans 19 NHTSA campaigns and a reported six-figure complaint count across its production run.

The most consequential of these defects centers on the Xtronic CVT — the continuously variable transmission that Nissan paired with the QR25DE 2.5-liter four-cylinder in every Rogue built during this period. Owners across the country have reported identical symptoms: a shudder or judder that starts around 40-60 mph, a hesitation when merging on the highway, and — in thousands of documented cases — a complete CVT failure before 100,000 miles. Nissan issued Technical Service Bulletin NTB16-052a to address the judder pattern with a CVT fluid exchange, but the bulletin itself acknowledges that full CVT replacement is the appropriate remedy when fluid exchange fails. The issue was significant enough to drive two federal class-action lawsuits — Hutchins v. Nissan and Sayre v. Nissan — that resulted in an extended CVT warranty for qualifying vehicles.

Beyond the CVT, 2017-2020 Rogues equipped with Intelligent Emergency Braking generated some of the highest brake-and-forward-collision complaint volumes in NHTSA's database for any mainstream SUV of this era. The system falsely activates at highway speeds, bringing the vehicle to a sudden stop with no obstacle present. Electrical wiring recalls, rearview camera failures, airbag occupant-detection defects, and a HVAC blend door pattern round out a defect history that, for some owners, has meant multiple warranty trips for the same symptom — exactly the factual pattern California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act was designed to remedy.

Steering Column Defect — Recall 14V218000 (2014)Safety2014
Symptoms

sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall

Why it matters for your claim

The steering column bolt defect (14V218000) could cause increased steering effort or complete loss of steering control — a direct safety risk. Under Song-Beverly, a safety defect supported by an NHTSA recall establishes that Nissan had notice of the problem and that the defect is real. If your 2014 Rogue required multiple dealer visits to complete or verify the recall repair, or if steering symptoms persisted after the recall fix, those repeated visits count toward the repair-attempt presumption.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners and, dealers will inspect and repair all affected vehicles, free of charge. The recall began on June 2, 2014. Owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261.

Wheel Lug Nut / Wheel Stud Defect — Recall 14V229000 (2014)Safety2014
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Wheel lug nut failure (14V229000) carries the risk of wheel detachment — a catastrophic loss-of-control scenario. The recall establishes manufacturer notice of the defect. If the dealer could not complete the recall fix within a reasonable time (causing the vehicle to be out of service), those days count toward Song-Beverly's 30-day out-of-service threshold independent of repair-attempt count.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten any loose lug nuts to the correct specification, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin by the end of June 2014. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Brake Booster Bolt Defect — Recall 15V012000 (2014-2015)Safety2014-2015
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Loose brake booster bolts (15V012000) reduce power-assist braking — a direct safety defect. Nissan's recall remedy required dealers to inspect and tighten or replace bolts. If your Rogue was in for multiple brake-related visits before or after this recall, those visits collectively support a Song-Beverly claim — California law counts each repair attempt for the same defect category, not just the recall-specific repair.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles and tighten any loose bolts to the proper specification, free of charge. The recall began February 2, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Electrical System / Rogue Select VIN Range Recall — 15V032000 (2014)Functional2014
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

This recall (15V032000) addressed an electrical system notification defect on the Rogue Select. While classified as a Functional defect, it is relevant because Nissan had notice of an electrical deficiency in this VIN range. If your vehicle also experienced other electrical issues requiring repeated repair, the cumulative electrical-system repair history can support a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the kick panel wiring harness connector and will if necessary install a new harness connector and waterproof seal, free of charge. The recall began on February 26, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure — Recall 15V197000 (2014, first VIN range)Safety2014
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Fuel pump failure causing engine stall or no-start while driving (15V197000) is a direct safety hazard — sudden stall at highway speed creates rear-collision risk. If your 2014 Rogue experienced stalling or no-start conditions requiring multiple dealer visits, each visit counts toward the Song-Beverly two-attempt safety-defect presumption. The existence of a second fuel pump recall (rcl-09 / 16V149000) for the same engine/component confirms Nissan had persistent notice of this defect.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began on May 26, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Tire Pressure Label Defect — Recall 15V368000 (2015 Rogue Select)Functional2015
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

The label recall (15V368000) is a low-severity functional defect. Standalone, it is unlikely to support a lemon-law claim. However, if documented as one of multiple defects requiring repair visits within your warranty period — alongside CVT, brake, or electrical issues — it contributes to the cumulative repair-attempt and out-of-service day records that Song-Beverly relies upon.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and will send them new labels with the corrected information, free of charge. The recall began on June 22, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Door Latch / Lock Linkage Defect — Recall 15V453000 (2015)Functional2015
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

The latch recall (15V453000) covered a limited VIN range of 2015 Rogues. If the latch defect caused a door to fail to latch properly and the dealer could not complete the repair in a single visit, those repair days count toward Song-Beverly's 30-day out-of-service presumption. Combined with other defects, the cumulative repair history builds the lemon-law evidentiary record.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the date, lot number, and cavity code on the left front and rear door latches, and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on August 31, 2015. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

CVT Gear Position (PRNDL) Display Defect — Recall 15V775000 (2015)Safety2015
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

The PRNDL gear position indicator defect (15V775000) can cause a driver to believe the vehicle is in Park when it is actually in Drive or Reverse — a classic rollaway and injury scenario. Under Song-Beverly, a safety-rated recall defect that required more than one dealer visit to diagnose and repair, or that recurred after the initial fix, supports a two-attempt lemon-law presumption. Note: this issue was mislabeled 'Brake System' in the original data — it is a Transmission/Drivetrain PRNDL defect.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the shift selector knob, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure — Recall 16V149000 (2014, second VIN range)Safety2014
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

This second fuel pump recall (16V149000) covered a different VIN range of 2014 Rogues with the same nickel-plating defect as recall 15V197000. The existence of two separate campaigns for the same component-and-defect combination reinforces that Nissan knew of a persistent manufacturing quality problem. If your VIN falls under this campaign and you also experienced fuel pump symptoms, the dual-recall record strengthens the manufacturer's constructive knowledge for a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Owners were sent interim notices on May 9, 2016. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. The recall is expected to begin on May 9, 2016. Owners m

Liftgate Support Strut Collapse — Recall 16V219000 (2014-2016)Safety2014-2016
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

A liftgate strut that collapses unexpectedly can strike and injure the occupant operating the liftgate — a direct physical-injury risk qualifying as a safety defect under Song-Beverly. If the dealer could not obtain replacement struts promptly, leaving the liftgate inoperable, those out-of-service days count toward the 30-day presumption. Post-recall liftgate motor failures (iss-25) are a separate, ongoing concern distinct from this strut recall.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear tailgate stays, free of charge. The recall began on November 18, 2016. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Occupant Classification System (OCS) Defect — Recall 16V244000 (2014-2017)Safety2014-2017
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

A faulty Occupant Classification System (OCS) can suppress the front passenger airbag for an adult occupant in a crash — the textbook definition of 'airbag non-deployment,' which the brief classifies as a Safety (not merely Functional) defect. Recall 16V244000 covered a broad MY range. If your Rogue required multiple visits for the airbag warning light or OCS software before the fix held, each visit counts under Song-Beverly's two-attempt safety presumption.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify their owners. Chevrolet City Express owners will be notified by General Motors. Dealers will reprogram the Air Bag Control Unit (ACU) and OCS Electronic Control Unit (ECU) in Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue, and Sentra vehicles, and replace the OCS ECU in LEAF, NV200, NV200 Taxi, Pa

Occupant Classification System (OCS) Defect — Recall 16V911000 (2015-2016)Safety2015-2016
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

A second OCS recall (16V911000) for 2015-2016 Rogues addresses the same airbag suppression risk as recall 16V244000. If your vehicle was subject to both recalls and required multiple visits for airbag warning light diagnosis and repair, those visits collectively demonstrate Nissan's failure to provide a permanent remedy — the core of a Song-Beverly recurring-safety-defect claim.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Seat Recliner Weld Defect — Recall 17V663000 (2016-2017)Safety2016-2017
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

A defective seat recliner weld can cause the seatback to collapse during a crash, increasing occupant injury risk — a safety defect under Song-Beverly. Recall 17V663000 affected 2016-2017 Rogues. If the recliner repair took multiple dealer visits to complete, or if seat movement/instability recurred after the fix, those repair attempts count toward the lemon-law presumption.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat frames and replace any defective lower seat frames, free of charge. The recall began December 6, 2017. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Seat Cushion / Foam Spring Defect — Recall 17V716000 (2016)Functional2016
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

The seat foam/spring recall (17V716000) is a comfort and ergonomic defect — not a crash-safety issue like the recliner weld in recall 17V663000. On its own, a seat comfort defect may not meet Song-Beverly's 'substantial impairment' threshold. However, if combined with other defects in the same vehicle's repair record — CVT, AEB, or brake issues — the total out-of-service days from all repairs collectively support the 30-day lemon presumption.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat back assembly, free of charge. The recall began January 08, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.

Rearview Camera Software / Display Failure — Recall 19V654000 (2018-2019)Safety2018-2019
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Federal law (FMVSS 111) requires a functioning rearview camera on all new passenger vehicles. A camera that fails to display during backup is a safety defect, not just an inconvenience. Recall 19V654000 confirms Nissan had notice of this failure mode on 2018-2019 Rogues. If the camera malfunction required multiple dealer visits to resolve, or if it is related to the broader NissanConnect freeze pattern (iss-23), those combined repair attempts strengthen a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.

Rogue Hybrid ECM Bracket / Engine Harness Damage — Recall 21V839000 (2017-2019 Hybrid)Functional2017-2019
Symptoms

engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V839000 affects Rogue Hybrid variants only (2017-2019). The ECM bracket contact can damage the engine wiring harness and blow a fuse, causing an illuminated warning light and potential loss of hybrid system function — a drivability issue. If your Rogue Hybrid required multiple visits for warning lights or engine harness repairs during the warranty period, those visits count toward Song-Beverly's four-attempt presumption for non-safety defects.

Typical fix

Dealers will install a harness protector cover, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R21B6.

Under-Dash Wiring Harness Corrosion — Recall 22V024000 (2014-2016)Safety2014-2016
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Water and salt intrusion corroding the under-dash wiring harness connector (22V024000) can cause electrical shorts affecting safety systems. The recall was issued in 2022 for vehicles originally sold as far back as 2014 — meaning some owners went years with an unaddressed defect. If your 2014-2016 Rogue had electrical warning lights or system faults before the recall was issued, and those symptoms were dismissed at earlier dealer visits, those prior visits may still count toward Song-Beverly's repair-attempt presumption.

Typical fix

Dealers will remove the harness tape and harness covering and replace both connectors and apply white lithium grease to the connectors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 23, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbe

Dashboard Wiring Harness Water Intrusion — Recall 22V875000 (2017)Safety2017
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Water leaking into and corroding the dashboard wiring harness (22V875000) risks electrical shorts in safety-critical circuits. For 2017 Rogue owners who experienced intermittent electrical faults, warning lights, or accessory failures before this recall was issued (2022), those prior dealer visits — even if inconclusive — can be documented as part of the Song-Beverly repair-attempt record once the underlying cause is confirmed by the recall.

Typical fix

Dealers will apply grease and repair any corroded connector as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC934.

Jackknife Ignition Key Collapse Defect — Recall 23V093000 (2014-2020)Safety2014-2020
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

A jackknife key that collapses while in the ignition can cause an unintended engine shutdown while driving — a loss-of-power safety scenario. Recall 23V093000 covers the entire T32 Rogue production run (2014-2020). If the key collapsed and caused a stall or no-start before the recall was remedied, and the dealer required multiple visits to diagnose or obtain the spacer remedy, those repair attempts count toward Song-Beverly's safety-defect two-attempt presumption.

Typical fix

Dealers will insert a spacer into the key slot of the jackknife key, free of charge. Interim notification letters notifying owners of the safety risk were mailed March 29, 2023. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 30, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-80

Xtronic CVT (JF017E) Shudder, Judder, and Premature FailureDrivability/Reliability2014-2020
Symptoms

transmission shudder at highway speeds; jerking or hesitation during acceleration; CVT judder between 40-60 mph; whirring or grinding noise from transmission; delayed throttle response; transmission slipping; complete CVT failure; car hesitates then surges when pressing gas; loss of power on highway

Why it matters for your claim

CVT shudder is a recurring, material impairment to use and value — a core Song-Beverly trigger. If the dealer performed multiple CVT fluid exchanges and/or a CVT replacement during the warranty period and the judder returned or the unit failed again, the vehicle likely qualifies as a lemon under the presumption of two or more repair attempts for a safety-impairing defect, or four or more repair attempts for a substantial defect. Extended warranty from the Sayre settlement does not waive lemon-law rights.

Typical fix

CVT fluid exchange with Nissan NS-3 fluid per TSB NTB16-052a (first attempt); if judder persists, CVT assembly replacement. Out-of-warranty replacement costs $3,500-5,000. Class-action settlement (Sayre) extended CVT powertrain warranty to 84 months / 84,000 miles for qualifying vehicles; owners should verify coverage with Nissan Consumer Affairs.

QR25DE Engine Excessive Oil Consumption — Low-Oil Stall and Engine Damage RiskDrivability/Reliability2014-2020
Symptoms

engine oil low warning light; burning oil smell; oil level drops between changes; engine stalls or surges; check engine light; smoke from exhaust; engine knocking at low oil; consumes more than 1 quart oil per 1000 miles; oil light on at 3000 miles after change

Why it matters for your claim

Excessive oil consumption is a material impairment to the vehicle's use and value under Song-Beverly when it requires repeated dealer visits for diagnosis and repair within the warranty period. If the dealer acknowledged the consumption via an oil consumption test but failed to permanently fix it, or if the engine sustained damage from low oil conditions despite proper maintenance, those repeated repair attempts support a lemon-law claim. Document every oil check and top-off as evidence of the ongoing defect.

Typical fix

Nissan dealers may perform an oil consumption test (two 1,200-mile measurement intervals). If consumption exceeds Nissan's threshold, piston ring replacement or short-block replacement is authorized under warranty. Out-of-warranty repair: $2,000-5,000+. Owners should check oil level every 1,000-1,500 miles as an interim measure.

Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB/IEB) False Activation — Sudden Unintended StopSafety2017-2020
Symptoms

car brakes suddenly with no obstacle; AEB engages on highway with no car ahead; automatic emergency braking light comes on randomly; vehicle stops without warning; forward collision warning activates then car brakes hard; ProPilot Assist false braking; AEB warning alert while driving under overpass or on metal grates; brake booster spongy; loud tone then sudden stop

Why it matters for your claim

Unintended AEB activation at highway speed is a direct safety defect — it creates rear-collision risk and loss of vehicle control. Under Song-Beverly, a safety defect that remains unremedied after two or more repair attempts triggers the lemon presumption. If the dealer issued a software update and the false braking recurred, the recurring nature of the defect strengthens the claim. Document every false-activation event with date, speed, conditions, and repair-order response.

Typical fix

Nissan dealer software calibration update for IEB module (internal service action R22A6). If brake booster spongy feel reported: brake system inspection per recall 15V012000 if applicable MY. Repeated false activations may require IEB sensor replacement or recalibration. Some owners report recurrence after software update.

NissanConnect Infotainment Screen Freeze, Black Screen, and Rearview Camera Lock-UpFunctional2014-2020
Symptoms

touchscreen goes black; infotainment screen frozen; NissanConnect reboots while driving; backup camera shows black screen in reverse; backup camera freezes on last image; Bluetooth drops; radio unresponsive; Nissan logo stuck on screen at startup; backup camera displays static image not live feed

Why it matters for your claim

A rearview camera that regularly fails — displaying a black screen or frozen image in reverse — is a safety defect, not merely an inconvenience. Recall 19V654000 already addressed a related camera failure for 2018-2019 MY. If the infotainment freeze causes the rearview camera to fail on a vehicle not covered by rcl-15, or if the camera failure returned after the recall repair, those repair attempts count toward the lemon-law repair-attempt presumption under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealer software update to NissanConnect firmware (no-charge under warranty). If freeze recurs after update, head unit module replacement. Out-of-warranty replacement: $800-1,500 parts + labor. Some MY2019-2020 units improved with OTA-style dealer flash.

HVAC Blend Door Actuator Failure — Heat / A/C Stuck and No DefrostFunctional2014-2020
Symptoms

heat stuck on; air conditioning stuck on cold; HVAC only blows cold; clicking noise from dashboard HVAC; no defroster function; temperature dial does not change air temperature; loud clicking or grinding from behind center dashboard; defroster button does nothing; front windshield fogs with no fix

Why it matters for your claim

A non-functioning defroster impairs safe operation in cold or foggy conditions — arguably a safety concern, not merely a comfort issue. Under Song-Beverly, a defect that substantially impairs the use of the vehicle (loss of defrost function) and requires multiple repair attempts within the warranty period can support a buyback claim, particularly if combined with other documented defects on the same vehicle. Owners should insist on a repair order noting 'no defrost / HVAC inoperative' specifically.

Typical fix

Blend door actuator motor replacement ($30-80 part) with 3-5 hours labor ($300-600 total). Dealer repair under warranty if within manufacturer warranty period. Aftermarket replacement parts available; some owners report improved durability with metal-gear aftermarket actuators.

Power Liftgate Motor / Sensor Failure — Liftgate Will Not Open or CloseFunctional2016-2020
Symptoms

power liftgate does not open; liftgate stops halfway; liftgate will not close; power liftgate unresponsive to fob or button; liftgate motor strains and stops; beeping sound when pressing liftgate button with no movement; liftgate reverses direction immediately after pressing open

Why it matters for your claim

Power liftgate failure on its own is a functional defect rather than a safety defect. However, if combined with other defects documented in a single vehicle's repair history, the cumulative out-of-service days from multiple repairs (CVT, liftgate, HVAC) may satisfy Song-Beverly's 30-day out-of-service presumption independently of the repair-attempt count. Owners should log every dealer visit and confirm liftgate repair orders specifically note 'power liftgate inoperative' for each visit.

Typical fix

Power liftgate motor replacement or sensor recalibration at dealer. Liftgate motor replacement: ~$400-800 parts + labor under warranty. Out-of-warranty: $600-1,200. Some failures resolved with liftgate ECU software update.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act applies to any new or certified pre-owned vehicle purchased or leased in California that was still under warranty when the defect first appeared.

For the Nissan Rogue T32, two presumptions are most relevant. The two-attempt presumption: if your Rogue required two or more repair attempts for the same safety defect without a permanent fix, Song-Beverly presumes the vehicle is a lemon. AEB false activation, airbag OCS failure (recalls 16V244000 and 16V911000), brake booster defect (15V012000), and rearview camera failure (19V654000) all qualify. The four-attempt / thirty-day presumption: four or more attempts for the same non-safety defect (CVT shudder, infotainment freeze, HVAC blend door), or 30+ cumulative out-of-service days across any warranty repairs, triggers the same presumption.

Important nuance for Rogue owners: the extended CVT warranty Nissan issued under the Sayre settlement is still a manufacturer warranty. Repairs performed under that extension count toward Song-Beverly's repair-attempt totals exactly as any factory warranty repair would.

Qualifying remedies include a full vehicle repurchase, a replacement vehicle, or a cash settlement — plus attorney's fees paid by Nissan, so eligible California owners can pursue a claim at no personal legal cost.

This is general information, not legal advice. No attorney-client relationship is formed. Law as of Jun 30, 2026.

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Nissan Rogue specifically

The most common dealer response to intermittent Rogue defects — CVT shudder, AEB false activation, and infotainment freeze — is 'unable to duplicate.' Here is how to build an unambiguous repair record:

1. Document before you go in. For CVT shudder, record a short video showing your speed, RPM gauge, and the vibration. For AEB false stops, note the date, speed, location, and road feature (overpass, grate, shadow) — exactly the triggers NHTSA complaints describe.

2. Use owner-language on the repair order. Reject any RO that says only 'checked, found normal.' Ask the service writer to write your words: 'transmission shudders at 50 mph,' 'emergency brakes fired with no car in front,' 'backup camera black in Reverse.' Vague descriptions produce vague — and legally useless — repair orders.

3. Request TSB NTB16-052a explicitly if your Rogue is within the CVT warranty period or the Sayre extended coverage. Ask the dealer to note on the RO whether the fluid exchange was performed and which fluid lot was used. If they decline, ask why in writing.

4. Insist on a technician test drive. CVT judder is reproducible at a predictable speed band. Demand that the technician accompany you and that the outcome — reproduced or not — be written on the repair order.

5. Save everything. Every RO, every estimate, every recall-completion notice. Ask the dealer to print the vehicle's Nissan warranty claim history. The paper trail is the foundation of any Song-Beverly claim.

6. Escalate to Nissan Consumer Affairs when the dealer repeats 'can't duplicate.' Open a case and ask for the case number to be added to your next RO. Nissan's written response — or silence — becomes evidence.

Our take

The Nissan Rogue T32 has one of the more complicated warranty records of any mainstream crossover sold in the United States during the 2014-2020 period. Nineteen NHTSA recall campaigns — covering fuel pumps, steering, airbags, wiring, cameras, and the ignition key — document a manufacturer that was repeatedly brought back to its own dealer network to fix problems that should not have existed at the point of sale. The CVT defect is particularly notable: it affected the vehicle's core driving experience, generated hundreds of NHTSA complaints per model year, drove two class-action settlements, and still appears in NHTSA complaint filings through 2026. For Rogue owners whose vehicles have spent time at the dealer for CVT, AEB, electrical, or camera issues — and whose repairs did not hold — the factual pattern is often exactly what Song-Beverly requires.

FAQ

Nissan Rogue lemon-law questions

Why does my Nissan Rogue shudder or vibrate at highway speeds?

The shudder you feel between 40 and 60 mph in your 2014-2020 Rogue is most likely the Xtronic CVT (JF017E) judder defect — a pattern documented in thousands of NHTSA complaints and addressed by Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB16-052a. The CVT's steel push-belt develops micro-slip under load as the fluid degrades, creating the vibration or judder sensation. Nissan's first-line remedy is a CVT fluid exchange with NS-3 fluid; if the shudder returns, the bulletin authorizes full CVT replacement under warranty. The defect drove two federal class-action settlements (Hutchins and Sayre) that extended CVT warranty coverage. If you have been back to the dealer two or more times for this symptom without a permanent fix, document every repair order — that pattern may qualify under California's Song-Beverly lemon law.

Why does my Nissan Rogue brake suddenly with nothing in front of it?

If your 2017-2020 Rogue with Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) or ProPilot Assist brakes hard at highway speed for no apparent reason, you are experiencing a documented AEB false-activation pattern. NHTSA received 253 combined brake and forward-collision complaints for the 2018 Rogue alone — making it the top complaint category that year. The radar/camera sensor behind the windshield falsely interprets overpasses, metal grates, shadows, and road markings as obstacles, triggering the Electric Brake Booster for a full stop. Nissan issued a software recalibration (internal service action R22A6) to reduce false activations. Ask your dealer specifically for this update and request the result be documented on the repair order. If the false braking recurs after the update, a second visit for the same safety defect can trigger California's Song-Beverly two-attempt lemon-law presumption.

Is there a recall on the Nissan Rogue backup camera or NissanConnect screen?

Yes — NHTSA Campaign 19V654000 recalled certain 2018-2019 Rogue vehicles for a rearview camera display failure in which the backup image does not display when the vehicle is shifted into Reverse, violating FMVSS 111. The remedy is a software update at no cost. If you own a 2014-2017 or 2020 Rogue and experience a black or frozen backup camera screen, the cause may be a separate NissanConnect infotainment freeze pattern rather than the hardware recall — the head unit crashes and takes the camera feed with it. Ask your dealer to check for available NissanConnect firmware updates. A consistently non-functioning backup camera is a safety defect, not merely a nuisance. If the camera fails repeatedly after dealer repairs, document each visit — two or more failed repair attempts for a safety defect can support a California lemon-law claim.

What are the Nissan Rogue fuel pump recalls and do they affect my car?

The 2014 Nissan Rogue had two separate fuel pump recall campaigns — 15V197000 and 16V149000 — both addressing the same nickel-plating defect inside the low-pressure fuel pump. The defect causes the pump to fail, leading to engine stall or no-start; stalling at highway speed creates a rear-collision risk. The two campaigns covered different VIN ranges of 2014 production, so some owners received both notices. To check whether your specific VIN is covered, visit NHTSA.gov and enter your VIN in the recall lookup tool, or call Nissan Consumer Affairs at 1-800-NISSAN-1. If you experienced stalling or no-start symptoms that required multiple dealer visits before the recall fix was completed — or if the fuel pump failed again after the recall remedy — those repair visits may support a Song-Beverly lemon-law claim.

Why does my Nissan Rogue use so much oil between oil changes?

Excessive oil consumption is a documented pattern in the QR25DE 2.5-liter engine used in all T32 Rogue models (2014-2020). Owners report losing a quart or more per 1,000 miles — well above the normal threshold. The root cause is piston ring and valve stem seal wear that allows oil to enter the combustion chamber; Nissan acknowledged a related issue on the same engine family in TSB NTB14-004a for the Altima. If you bring an oil-consumption complaint to the dealer during the warranty period, ask that they perform an oil consumption test (two measurement intervals of approximately 1,200 miles each) and document the results on the repair order. If consumption is confirmed above threshold and the dealer authorizes piston ring or short-block replacement but the problem returns, repeated oil-consumption repairs within the warranty period can support a California lemon-law claim.

My Nissan Rogue heat is stuck on cold and there is a clicking noise — what is wrong?

If your Rogue blows only cold air regardless of the temperature setting — accompanied by a clicking or grinding noise from behind the center dashboard — the HVAC blend door actuator has most likely failed. The blend door motor uses plastic gears that strip with age and heat cycling, locking the door in the cold position. The result is loss of heat and, critically, loss of front defroster function — which impairs windshield visibility in cold or wet conditions. The actuator itself is an inexpensive part ($30-80), but replacing it requires partial dashboard disassembly, so labor typically brings total cost to $300-600. If this failed while your Rogue was under the manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty and the dealer could not permanently fix it within two or more visits, or if the combination of HVAC, CVT, AEB, and other warranty repairs caused your vehicle to spend 30 or more cumulative days at the dealer, California's Song-Beverly lemon law may provide a remedy.
