The overview

What owners are dealing with

You bought a third-generation Nissan Frontier because it promised mid-size truck capability without full-size headaches — a fully redesigned platform, a brand-new V6, and a 9-speed transmission built by ZF, the supplier that powers BMWs and Land Rovers. What many 2022-2024 Frontier owners discovered instead was a truck with a safety-system architecture that can fail all at once. One moment the dashboard is normal; the next, a cascade of warning lights extinguishes your ABS, traction control, automatic emergency braking, and cruise control simultaneously — all from a single ABS control module fault that Nissan acknowledged in two technical service bulletins by September 2022. The truck resets when you turn the key off, which means the dealer's scanner captures nothing, and the repair order says 'cannot duplicate.' You drive home with the same truck. It faults again.

That pattern — a known defect, a bulletin, a reset that masks the fault at the dealer, and repeat visits that produce no permanent fix — is exactly the scenario the California Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act exists to address. Nissan's own records show ten separate federal recalls covering the D41 Frontier for model years 2022 through 2024, ranging from a missing tow hitch that compromised the fuel tank in a rear crash to a parking pawl that could let the truck roll in Park. Add owner-documented issues with the ZF 9HP58 transmission surging to 6,500 RPM during adaptive cruise on minor hills, a driver power seat that reclines by itself while you are driving, and an infotainment head unit that freezes and requires power cycling after repeated software updates, and the picture of this generation's growing pains becomes clear. If you have been to the dealer three or more times for any of these conditions without a lasting fix, you may have more options than you think.

Fuel Tank Structural Integrity Failure — Missing Tow Hitch — Recall 21V917 (2022 Crew Cab Long Bed)Safety2022
Symptoms

fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V917 applies to 2022 Frontier Crew Cab Long Bed trucks where the tow hitch was not installed, compromising the fuel tank in a rear crash. If your truck received the recall remedy (hitch and harness installation) and you later experienced fuel system issues or if the dealer performed the recall repair multiple times, that repair history is relevant. Under Song-Beverly, a recall-backed safety defect that requires multiple dealer visits or was not properly completed supports a warranty claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will install the tow hitch and harness kit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 16, 2021. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC855.

Seat / Seat Fastener DefectSafety2022
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V958 addresses improperly torqued left-rear seat belt bracket mounting bolts on 2022 Frontiers — a FMVSS 207/209/210 noncompliance that directly affects occupant protection in a crash. Under Song-Beverly, a safety recall that is not successfully completed (e.g., threads were damaged and were not properly repaired, or the bolt failure reoccurred) can support a warranty or lemon-law claim. Save all dealer recall completion paperwork.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the bolts on the left-rear seat and repair any damaged threads as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were January 27, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC856.

Transmission Parking Pawl Failure — Rollaway Risk — Recall 22V457 (2020-2022)Safety2022
Symptoms

transmission shifts unexpectedly; hesitation; harsh shift; transmission warning

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 22V457 covers 2020-2022 Frontiers whose transmission parking pawl may not engage when shifted to Park, creating a rollaway hazard. Nissan's interim remedy was to advise owners to always use the parking brake — a workaround, not a fix. If your vehicle rolled while in Park before or after the recall remedy (parking pawl pin replacement), that incident and the repair record support a Song-Beverly claim, particularly if the dealer had to make multiple attempts or the vehicle was out of service during parts availability delays.

Typical fix

Owners are advised to apply the parking brake every time they park their vehicle. Dealers will replace the transmission parking pawl pin, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this rec

Rearview Camera Failure via SiriusXM IVI Reboot — Recall 22V527 (2022 Rental)Safety2022
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 22V527 covers 2022 Frontier rental fleet vehicles where a SiriusXM 'Not Subscribed' state could cause the infotainment head unit to reboot, rendering the rearview camera inoperable — a violation of FMVSS 111. If your Frontier is a former rental and the rearview camera has been intermittently inoperative in reverse, the recall history plus any post-remedy recurrence of camera failures (potentially indicating the head unit has additional instability beyond this recall) supports both a warranty and lemon-law claim. Confirm recall completion status with Nissan.

Typical fix

The Infotainment system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 29, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is R22A5 PC901 PC

Transmission Parking Pawl / TCM Reprogram — Recall 22V671 (2020-2022)Safety2022
Symptoms

transmission shifts unexpectedly; hesitation; harsh shift; transmission warning

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 22V671 is an expansion and refinement of 22V457, adding TCM reprogramming for 2020-2022 Frontiers in addition to the parking pawl pin replacement. Owners who experienced vehicle rollaway incidents between the two recall campaigns — a period during which Nissan was aware of the defect but had not yet completed the full remedy — have a particularly strong basis for a Song-Beverly claim. Under California law, manufacturer awareness at the time of a warranty repair attempt is a key factor.

Typical fix

Owners are advised to apply the parking brake every time they park their vehicle. Dealers will perform the applicable repairs below, free of charge: • Model Year 2020-2022 Frontier vehicles: reprogram Transmission Control Module (TCM) • Model Year 2020-2022 Titan vehicles: reprogram TCM and Engine C

Rearview Camera / IVI System Continuous Reboot — Recall 22V772 (2022)Safety2022
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 22V772 covers 2022 Frontier, Titan, and Titan XD vehicles where the IVI system continuously reboots on restart, making the rearview camera inoperative (FMVSS 111 noncompliance). The OTA update remedy means many owners may not have visited a dealer — if your vehicle received only an OTA update and the rearview camera or IVI system continued to have issues, a dealer visit for follow-up diagnosis is important to establish the repair record. Multiple IVI software updates without permanent resolution are relevant to a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

The IVI software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed November 18, 2022. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are R22B8, R22C1, and PC923/

Tires:Bead RecallSafety2023
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V273 covers 2023 Frontier vehicles with tires that may have a torn inner bead capable of causing rapid tire pressure loss — a blowout risk at highway speeds. If you experienced a sudden tire pressure loss or blowout before receiving the recall notice and dealer tire replacement, document the incident. Under Song-Beverly, a safety defect that caused actual failure (a blowout or handling emergency) in addition to the recall remedy history strengthens a claim, especially if the replacement tires also developed issues or the remedy took multiple dealer visits.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace all four road tires, or inspect and replace the spare tire assembly, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 10, 2023. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PC973 and PC9

Airbag / Occupant Detection Defect - Airbag May Not Deploy CorrectlySafety2024
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 24V154 covers 2024 Frontier vehicles with driver's airbag inflators that may absorb moisture and deploy improperly — analogous to the Takata airbag crisis pattern that drove major California lemon-law litigation. The remedy (airbag assembly replacement) must be performed at a dealer. If the replacement airbag was not properly installed, if the dealer's appointment was significantly delayed causing you to drive without a functional airbag, or if any subsequent airbag-related warning light appeared, that history supports both a warranty and Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the front driver's air bag assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 10, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's numbers for this recall are PD103, PD104, and PMA34.

Suspension Fastener DefectSafety2024
Symptoms

front suspension noise; stabilizer bar loose; vehicle pulls or clunks

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 24V479 covers 2024 Frontiers with an oversized front right lower ball joint that can corrode and separate — a loss-of-steering-control defect. Ball joint separation at speed is a catastrophic failure mode. Under Song-Beverly, if your vehicle experienced any handling anomaly (pull, clunk, or shimmy) before the recall repair, or if the recall remedy (lower link replacement) was not immediately available and you drove the vehicle under a 'check this vehicle' status, that adds to the claim record.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the front right-side lower link, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 15, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan's customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PD109.

Exterior Lighting FailureFunctional2024
Symptoms

tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 24V582 covers 2024 Frontiers where the right-side headlight assembly may have missing or illegible aim markings, potentially causing improperly aimed headlights (FMVSS 108 noncompliance). While misaligned headlights alone rarely drive a lemon-law case, if this recall is combined with other open defects on the same vehicle — particularly safety issues like the ball joint recall (24V479) or ABS module fault — the cumulative repair record and cumulative days out of service across all open issues may support a Song-Beverly claim.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the right-side headlight as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 20, 2024. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669. Nissan's number for this recall is PD121.

ABS Control Module Fault (DTC C1116/C1142) — ABS, TCS, AEB and Cruise Control All DisabledSafety2022
Symptoms

ABS warning light on; traction control disabled; forward collision avoidance system fault; automatic emergency braking system fault; cruise control malfunction; 'System Fault see owners manual' message; all safety system lights illuminate simultaneously; system clears on restart but returns; DTC C1116 or C1142 stored; dealer says cannot duplicate

Why it matters for your claim

Nissan's own TSBs (NTB22-082a and NTB22-084) confirm manufacturer awareness of the ABS module defect that disables ABS, automatic emergency braking, and collision avoidance simultaneously. Under Song-Beverly, a safety-system defect with documented repeat repairs and a 'cannot duplicate' pattern at the dealer is precisely the scenario the Act is designed to address — each failed repair attempt counts. The post-TSB recurrence (DTC C1A13-72) strengthens the repeat-repair argument.

Typical fix

Brake switch adjustment per NTB22-082a; ABS control module reprogram or replacement per NTB22-084. If DTC C1A13-72 appears post-repair, additional diagnosis of AEB/ICC system required. Software-reset may not resolve root cause — module replacement may be necessary.

ZF 9HP58 9-Speed Harsh Downshift / Adaptive Cruise RPM Surge on InclinesDrivability/Reliability2022-2024
Symptoms

harsh downshift when slowing; automatic transmission fault warning; cruise control hunts gears on hills; engine races to 5000-6500 RPM during cruise control on slight incline; jolt or lurch when coasting to stop; transmission slips out of gear; howling or whining on deceleration; check engine light; transmission fails to engage after stop; sudden loss of drive power

Why it matters for your claim

Repeated transmission repair attempts — including TCM reprogram attempts that do not eliminate the harsh-shift or cruise-surge behavior — can satisfy the Song-Beverly 'reasonable number of repair attempts' threshold. A complete transmission failure at low mileage (as documented in NHTSA ODI) particularly supports a lemon claim when the dealer has been given multiple opportunities to diagnose and repair.

Typical fix

TCM software reprogramming per applicable Nissan service procedure (may partially reduce cruise control downshift severity). Valve body replacement or full transmission replacement in cases of solenoid failure or complete loss of drive. Note: transmission replacement may be required at unexpectedly low mileage based on owner complaint records.

ProPILOT Assist / Intelligent ADAS Phantom Braking and Persistent System FaultSafety2022-2024
Symptoms

forward collision avoidance suddenly brakes with no object present; 'System Fault see owners manual'; ABS and traction control lights on; cruise control disabled without driver input; all driver-assist systems shut off simultaneously; warning indicators illuminate in clear weather or rain; cannot reset without turning off and restarting; problem recurs after restart; dealer cannot duplicate; DTC clears on restart

Why it matters for your claim

Phantom braking at highway speed is a safety defect regardless of whether a formal recall is issued. Under Song-Beverly, if the dealer has been presented with the vehicle for this condition multiple times and cannot permanently resolve it — particularly given Nissan's own TSB acknowledges the ABS module causes ADAS system failures — the repair history supports a warranty claim. The 'cannot duplicate' dealer response is common for this defect and does not disqualify the owner's claim.

Typical fix

ABS module repair per NTB22-082a/NTB22-084 may partially address the system-fault mode. For persistent phantom braking, front radar sensor inspection and recalibration. In cases where AEB continues to fail post-TSB, further diagnosis of ICC/AEB integration module required. No single permanent fix documented as of 2026.

NissanConnect 12.3" Infotainment System Freeze, Audio Static, and Backup Camera DelayFunctional2022-2024
Symptoms

touchscreen goes black or freezes randomly; loud static from speakers when increasing volume; radio shuts off and requires power cycle; backup camera does not appear when shifting to reverse; infotainment screen takes up to one minute to initialize; head unit reboots while driving; NissanConnect app disconnects; wireless Apple CarPlay or Android Auto drops connection; problem returns after dealer software update

Why it matters for your claim

Infotainment defects alone typically do not meet the Song-Beverly 'substantial impairment' threshold unless the touchscreen controls HVAC, backup camera, or other safety functions — all of which the NissanConnect system integrates. Backup camera non-function in reverse is a safety defect (FMVSS 111). If a dealer has performed multiple software updates without permanently resolving the backup camera or repeated reboot condition, that repair history supports a warranty and potentially lemon-law claim, especially when combined with other open defects on the vehicle.

Typical fix

Infotainment software update (OTA or dealer-performed). Dealer software updates have provided temporary improvement for some owners but the problem recurs. Head unit replacement may be required in persistent cases. Ensure all applicable recall software updates (22V527, 22V772) have been applied before additional diagnosis.

Driver Power Seat Seatback Spontaneous Random Recline During Driving or When ParkedSafety2022
Symptoms

driver seat reclines on its own while driving; seat tilts all the way back without driver input; seat position changes overnight; driver must readjust seat every time entering vehicle; seat reclines pinning rear passengers; dealer says 'known engineering issue'; no fix available from dealer

Why it matters for your claim

A driver seat that reclines unexpectedly during operation is a safety defect that can impair the driver's ability to control the vehicle — courts and the Song-Beverly Act do not require an injury to have occurred. If the dealer has acknowledged the defect as a 'known Engineering Issue' and failed to provide a permanent fix after multiple visits, this pattern satisfies the repeat-repair standard. Document each visit where the seat was adjusted or inspected without resolution.

Typical fix

No confirmed permanent repair as of complaint filing dates. Dealer may refer to an internal TSB for seat control module inspection or replacement, but owners report recurrence after repair attempts. Seat control module replacement or seatback wiring harness inspection may be performed.

Roof Channel Seam Sealant Defect — Water Intrusion and Rust FormationCosmetic/Annoyance2022
Symptoms

water dripping inside cab from roof channel; damp headliner or carpet; rust forming around roof seam; paint cracking or bubbling at roofline; water stain on ceiling; mildew smell inside cabin

Why it matters for your claim

While cosmetic defects generally do not rise to lemon-law level on their own, a manufacturing sealant defect that allows water intrusion and rust formation under the paint — especially when the vehicle is still under warranty — can constitute a covered defect under Song-Beverly's broad 'nonconformity' language. If the dealer has repaired and the rust or leak has returned, that repeat repair history matters.

Typical fix

Dealer seam sealant repair, rust treatment, and repaint of affected roof channel area. If rust has penetrated significantly, additional corrosion treatment and panel repair may be required. Coverage under new vehicle warranty depends on mileage and age at discovery.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act protects buyers and lessees of new vehicles with a warranty-covered defect that substantially impairs use, value, or safety — and that the manufacturer has not repaired after a reasonable number of attempts.

For the 2022-2024 Nissan Frontier, the most directly relevant defects are:

Safety: The ABS module fault (NTB22-084) that disables ABS, automatic emergency braking, and ProPILOT together; phantom braking at speed; the parking pawl rollaway risk (Recalls 22V457/22V671); and a driver seat that reclines during operation — each involves a safety system under the new-vehicle warranty.

Drivability: ZF 9HP58 harsh shifts, cruise-control RPM spikes to 6,500, and complete transmission failure at low mileage impair the vehicle's core function.

What is 'reasonable': California presumes two or more repair attempts for a safety defect that could cause serious injury, or four or more for any other defect. Alternatively, 30 cumulative calendar days out of service for warranty repairs triggers the same presumption — days do not need to be consecutive.

Remedies: Full repurchase or vehicle replacement — purchase price, taxes, fees, and finance charges, minus a usage offset — plus the manufacturer pays your attorney fees.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Nissan Frontier specifically

The Frontier's ABS module fault (DTC C1116/C1142) and ProPILOT ADAS system fault both reset at key-off — exactly what happens when you drive to the dealer. Here is how to build a record that survives that reset:

1. Film before you go. The moment the 'System Fault' warning appears, record your dashboard showing the date/time cluster and your speed. This is often the only evidence that survives a key cycle.

2. Drive directly to the dealer with the fault live. If safe, do not turn off the vehicle. Demand the technician scan it before key-off — DTC C1116 may still be stored but will clear if you restart first.

3. Save your Nissan Connected Services alert. The 2022-2024 Frontier logs fault data to NissanConnect, which emails fault alerts with timestamps — manufacturer data proving the event occurred.

4. Insist the repair order documents your complaint verbatim: 'ABS, TCS, AEB, and cruise control disabled simultaneously; DTC C1116 stored; system reset at restart.' If the RO says only 'no fault found,' request a correction before signing.

5. Reference TSBs NTB22-082a and NTB22-084 by number. Ask the service writer whether both bulletins have been applied to your VIN. Request the answer in writing.

6. Count every visit. Under Song-Beverly, each dealer visit where the safety system condition is presented — even if no parts are replaced — is a qualifying repair attempt. Two visits for a safety defect triggers the lemon law presumption.

Our take

The third-generation Frontier's defect record is dominated by one architecture problem: an ABS module that disables every active safety system at once. Nissan knew by September 2022 — two TSBs in the same month — but the self-clearing fault means the dealer's scanner sees nothing, and the repair order says 'cannot duplicate.' That gap between manufacturer knowledge and effective dealer repair is exactly what Song-Beverly addresses.

The ZF 9HP58 cruise surge and phantom braking add an independent safety dimension. Ten recalls in three model years on a freshly redesigned platform is a dense record. If your Frontier has been to the dealer three or more times for any of these issues, a lemon-law evaluation is worth a free conversation.

FAQ

Nissan Frontier lemon-law questions

Why do all my Nissan Frontier's safety systems — ABS, traction control, and cruise control — turn off at the same time?

If your 2022-2024 Frontier shows ABS, TCS, forward collision, and cruise control warnings simultaneously, the likely cause is an ABS control module fault — DTC C1116 or C1142. Nissan issued TSBs NTB22-082a (brake switch adjustment) and NTB22-084 (ABS module reprogram) in September 2022. The system resets when you turn the vehicle off, so the dealer's scanner may show nothing — owners call this 'cannot duplicate.' Film the dashboard when faults appear and track every visit: under California's Song-Beverly Act, each repair attempt counts even if no code is captured. Two visits for a safety defect triggers the lemon law presumption. Source: NHTSA ODI 11746916, 11519405.

Why does my Nissan Frontier's cruise control rev to 5,000 RPM going uphill?

The 2022-2024 Frontier's ZF 9HP58 9-speed has a documented calibration problem with adaptive cruise: losing 1-3 mph on an incline triggers an aggressive multi-gear downshift, spiking RPM to 5,000-6,500. NHTSA has logged multiple complaints calling it a safety risk — one owner temporarily lost control on gravel during a surge (ODI 11580282). Dealers may reprogram the TCM with partial improvement, but owners report recurrence. The ZF 9HP58 also produced the same complaint pattern on the shared-platform Pathfinder R53 and Titan A61. A repeat TCM reprogram that does not eliminate the surge is a second qualifying repair attempt under Song-Beverly. Source: NHTSA ODI 11580282, 11556120, 11533124.

My Nissan Frontier braked hard by itself with nothing in front of me — is this a known issue?

Yes. Phantom braking — AEB firing with no obstacle present — is the most-reported complaint category for the 2022 Frontier in NHTSA's database (32+ complaints). Events occur at highway speed in clear weather and rain. Nissan's TSB NTB22-084 covers a related ABS module fault (DTC C1116) that disables AEB and cruise simultaneously; some owners also report AEB failing to activate after the TSB repair (new DTC C1A13-72). Document each phantom braking event — date, speed, weather — and request the dealer check radar sensor calibration and ABS module status. California law treats a safety system that fires incorrectly the same as one that fails to fire: both are defects. Source: NHTSA ODI 11480478, 11533471.

Can a Nissan Frontier qualify for California's lemon law if the dealer keeps saying it cannot duplicate the problem?

Yes. Song-Beverly requires a reasonable number of repair attempts — not a confirmed fix. If your Frontier's ABS fault (DTC C1116/C1142) resets before you reach the dealer, each visit still counts. To protect your record: (1) Film the dashboard when the fault appears. (2) Insist the repair order documents your exact complaint verbatim, even if the dealer finds nothing. (3) Ask whether TSBs NTB22-082a and NTB22-084 have been applied to your VIN and get the answer in writing. (4) Two dealer visits for a safety defect triggers the Song-Beverly lemon law presumption in California. Source: NHTSA ODI 11519405, 11533471.

Is the Nissan Frontier's transmission parking pawl recall fixed — and could my truck still roll in Park?

Two NHTSA recalls — 22V457 (June 2022) and 22V671 (September 2022) — addressed the ZF 9HP58 parking pawl failing to engage in Park, creating a rollaway risk. The full remedy includes pawl pin replacement plus TCM reprogram. Confirm completion for your VIN by calling Nissan at 1-800-867-7669 or checking nhtsa.gov/recalls. Always use the parking brake as a secondary measure. If your truck rolled before you received the recall notice — or rolled again after the remedy — that incident is relevant to a Song-Beverly claim: Nissan was aware of the defect during any warranty visit in that period. My 2024 Nissan Frontier has an airbag recall — what should I do, and does it affect a lemon law case?

Recall 24V154 (February 2024) covers 2024 Frontiers with a driver's airbag inflator that may absorb moisture and deploy improperly — a serious safety defect. The remedy is dealer replacement of the driver's airbag assembly, free of charge. Confirm your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call Nissan at 1-800-867-7669 (recall numbers PD103, PD104) and schedule promptly. From a lemon-law standpoint: days spent waiting for parts while driving with a known defective airbag can count toward the 30-day out-of-service threshold under Song-Beverly (fact-specific). If an airbag warning light appears after replacement, that is a separate repair attempt. Source: NHTSA Recall 24V154000.
