Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure — Recall 16V758000 (2017)
engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
47 NHTSA recalls on 2017-2023 Mercedes E-Class W213: fuel pumps, airbags, steering, seats. California lemon law buyback rights. Free review.
You spent between $54,000 and $115,000 on a Mercedes-Benz E-Class because the W213 was supposed to represent the apex of German engineering: a hand-built interior, the velvety M256 inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist, an AIRMATIC air suspension that glides over freeway expansion joints, and a MBUX system that understands natural language. Instead, many owners have discovered that the promise and the reality are separated by a filing cabinet full of NHTSA recall notices and a dealer service department that knows their name by heart.
The W213 accumulated 47 formal NHTSA recalls between its 2017 debut and the close of 2023 production—a density spanning nearly every major system: fuel pumps, airbags, electric power steering, seat assemblies, rearview cameras, blind-spot sensors, seatbelts, wiring, and both the 12V and 48V batteries. The low-pressure fuel pump defect alone spawned three separate campaigns (16V758000, 23V445000, 23V880000) covering the full production run—meaning this vulnerability was present at launch and never fully engineered away. The 2021 model year is particularly record-laden: owners experienced five separate occupant-restraint recalls within twelve months of delivery.
Beyond the official recall record, owners face TSB-acknowledged problems that never achieved recall status: 9G-Tronic 725.0 harsh shifts requiring repeated software updates and valve body replacements, AIRMATIC compressor burnouts costing $3,000-$6,000 out of warranty, MBUX 1.0 freeze events that black out the rearview camera, and 48V EQ Boost battery failures that strand E450 and AMG E53 drivers without warning. California's Song-Beverly Act may entitle qualifying owners to a full buyback or replacement vehicle at no cost.
The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
Recall 16V758000 addresses LPFP impeller failure on 2017 E300 Sedans that can cause engine stall without warning—a safety defect under Song-Beverly. If the dealer's recall repair fails to resolve stalling (or if the vehicle stalled before the recall remedy was applied), the owner has grounds for a lemon-law claim. Every RO documenting a stall, no-start, or fuel-pressure code before and after the recall repair is critical evidence.
MBUSA has notified owners, and dealers will modify the routing of the affected wiring harness, repairing it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 28, 2016. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 17V076000 addresses front passenger occupant classification sensor failure that can prevent airbag deployment in a crash—a life-safety defect. Under Song-Beverly, any safety system recall that requires multiple dealer visits or parts delays constitutes a substantial impairment of use and safety. If the OCS replacement is backordered and the vehicle cannot be driven safely, cumulative out-of-service days count toward the 30-day lemon-law threshold.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the routing of the pressure hose of the seat occupancy detection control unit and replace the pressure hose and seat occupancy detection mat if necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-80
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 17V078000 addresses a transmission control module software error that can increase steering effort on 2017 E300 models, affecting vehicle control at speed. Unexpected increase in steering effort is a safety hazard under Song-Beverly. If the TCM software update does not fully restore normal steering feel or the symptom recurs, each subsequent dealer visit is an additional repair attempt toward the three-attempt lemon presumption.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering column-mounted shift lever module, free of charge. The recall began April 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 17V080000 covers frontal passenger airbag inflator module defects that can cause non-deployment in a crash on 2017 E400 Coupe and Cabriolet variants. The inflator defect is a non-collision safety risk. Owners who experienced difficulty scheduling repairs or lengthy parts wait should document out-of-service days; Song-Beverly's 30-day cumulative threshold applies across all warranty-covered defects, not just this one.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected air bag modules, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 17V114000 addresses a starter assembly defect on 2017 E-Class models where the starter may not engage, causing a no-start condition. A vehicle that intermittently fails to start is a drivability defect that substantially impairs daily use. If the starter replacement did not fully resolve the no-start (or if the vehicle required multiple tows), each tow and repair visit is documented evidence for a Song-Beverly claim.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fuse in the electrical line to the starter, free of charge. The recall began August 31, 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2017080002.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 17V176000 addresses front passenger airbag control module defects on 2017 E300/E300 4Matic that may suppress airbag deployment. A vehicle with an unrepaired or re-failing airbag safety recall is unsafe to operate and substantially impaired under Song-Beverly. If the dealer replaced the module and the airbag warning light reappeared, that recurrence is an additional repair attempt toward lemon-law eligibility.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the air bag control module software, free of charge. The recall began April 13, 2017. Owner's can contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 17V241000 covers electric power steering assist system defects on 2017 E-Class models that can cause sudden loss of power steering assist, requiring much greater force to steer. Loss of EPS assist at highway speed creates collision risk. Any recurrence after the recall repair constitutes a repeat safety defect under Song-Beverly and strongly supports a buyback or replacement claim.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the connector and inspect the electric power steering rack, replacing the rack as necessary. These repairs will be performed free of charge. Remedy parts are currently unavailable. Interim notices informing owners of the safety risk are expected to
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 17V245000 covers a widescreen cockpit software defect on 2017 E300/E300 4Matic where the display could freeze or show incorrect information. While a software freeze is typically a functional defect, if the frozen display caused the rearview camera to be unavailable—implicating FMVSS 111 compliance—it escalates to a safety concern. If the software update failed to resolve the freeze, subsequent freeze events are additional repair attempts under Song-Beverly.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the instrument cluster display software, free of charge. The recall began late May 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 17V246000 addresses structural defects in the roof and pillar assembly on 2016-2017 E300 models. A structural defect affecting rollover protection is among the most serious safety concerns under Song-Beverly. If the body repair required extended shop time or if the dealer identified additional structural concerns during the recall repair, document all findings as supporting evidence.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the roof spoilers, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began June 9, 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 17V574000 is a limited-scope steering recall covering a small number of 2017 E300 4Matic sedans. Though narrow in scope, EPS failure is a safety defect and repeated steering-system repairs—across any combination of steering recalls—count cumulatively toward Song-Beverly's repair-attempt threshold for the same or substantially similar defect (loss of steering assist).
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric power steering rack, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin November 10, 2017. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 17V714000 addresses EPS assist failure on 2017 E300 and S-Class models. Owners who experienced more than one steering-related recall repair on the same vehicle should treat all steering ROs as a single defect series under Song-Beverly. California courts have found that a manufacturer's inability to permanently resolve a safety steering defect across multiple attempts constitutes substantial impairment.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the steering rack, replace it as necessary, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in January 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-496-3691.
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Recall 18V151000 addresses LED headlight failure on 2017 E-Class models that can leave the driver without adequate forward lighting at night—a direct safety hazard. Headlight failure while driving is a substantial impairment of use under Song-Beverly. If the LED headlight module replacement failed or had to be repeated, those ROs collectively support a lemon claim for repeated safety-related repair attempts.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the headlamp adjustment, adjusting it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 3, 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2018030005.
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Recall 18V271000 covers a separate LED headlight defect on 2017 E-Class—reduced illumination that compromises nighttime visibility. Owners who experienced both 18V151000 and 18V271000 headlight repairs on the same vehicle have two distinct headlight-system recall repairs, strengthening a Song-Beverly claim based on recurring inability to provide safe lighting.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will retrofit the sealing caps for the headlights, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in June 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2018050012.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 18V515000 covers 2018 E-Class models with the same occupant-classification sensor family as 17V076000. Repeat airbag-system failures across multiple sensors on the same vehicle—especially if the owner also experienced 17V076000 repair—may indicate a systemic safety problem that a reasonable buyer would not have accepted, supporting a strong lemon claim on the ground of ongoing safety impairment.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion, free of charge. The recall began November 26, 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.

A vehicle that loses electrical power while in motion—disabling the EPS, brake assist, and lighting—presents a safety risk under Song-Beverly. Owners should confirm the cable recall was completed and document any subsequent electrical warnings.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the positive pole cover, free of charge. The recall began November 27, 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2018110002.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 18V761000 covers an ECU software defect on 2019 C-Class, E-Class, and GLC models. A software recall that requires multiple dealer visits to fully resolve—or that triggers new fault codes after the update—constitutes repeated attempts under Song-Beverly. Owners should retain every RO documenting software reprogramming to build a complete repair history.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the CPC control unit software, free of charge. The recall began April 12, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2019030012.
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 18V839000 covers seatbelt retractor and fastener defects on 2019 C-Class and E-Class Cabriolet models that can prevent proper restraint in a crash. Seatbelt failures are among the highest-priority safety recalls. Out-of-service time while awaiting parts for a seatbelt recall is fully cognizable under Song-Beverly's 30-day threshold.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat belt buckles, free of charge. The recall began March 18, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2019020012.
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Recall 18V849000 addresses structural and lighting defects on 2019 E450 4Matic Wagon and E63S AMG Wagon. These estate variants are premium, purpose-chosen vehicles; a structural or lighting defect that requires recall repair within the first model year substantially impairs the vehicle's value and safety under Song-Beverly.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the spoiler, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 19, 2018. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2018120002.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 18V850000 covers rack-and-pinion steering defects on 2018-2019 E-Class models that can cause loss of steering control. Rack failure at speed is among the most dangerous steering defects. If the rack was replaced and steering complaints continued, or if the repair required extended dealer time (parts on back-order), document every out-of-service day and all steering-related RO dates for California lemon-law analysis.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering rack, free of charge. The recall began August 23, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2019080012.
brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light
Recall 19V540000 covers 2019 E-Class ADAS radar sensing defects that can cause unexpected emergency braking or failure to brake for obstacles. A phantom-braking event at highway speed creates a rear-end collision risk for following vehicles—a direct safety hazard. If the radar update failed to resolve phantom braking, the owner has a safety-based lemon claim and should report every event to NHTSA and the dealer contemporaneously.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will update the radar sensor control unit software, free of charge. The recall began September 13, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2019080008.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 19V676000 covers body structural defects on 2019 E450 4Matic Wagon and 2017-2019 E400 4Matic Wagon variants. Structural integrity is fundamental to occupant protection; a recalled structural defect on a recently purchased premium wagon substantially impairs the vehicle's safety. Body repairs often require significant dealer time, contributing to out-of-service day accumulation under Song-Beverly.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and correct the mounting of the spoiler, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 18, 2019. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. Note: This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall number 18V-849. MBUSA's number f

Recall 19V788000 covers seatbelt retractor defects on 2018-2019 E-Class Wagon, E43 AMG, and E63S AMG models. Owners who experienced both the 18V839000 and 19V788000 seatbelt recalls on the same vehicle have multiple safety-recall repair records for the same occupant restraint system, which independently and collectively support a lemon claim.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the front seat belt buckles, replacing them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 13, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020020017.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 20V068000 addresses eCall and communication module defects on 2020 E-Class models. While eCall failure is primarily a regulatory compliance issue (EU/FMVSS), a communication module failure that also disables remote services (MBME app, stolen vehicle tracking) substantially impairs the vehicle's connected features. If the module repair required extended dealer time, those days count toward Song-Beverly's 30-day threshold.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the communication module, free of charge. The recall began April 14, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020030016.
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 20V228000 addresses improperly assembled front left seatbelt webbing on 2020 E450 Coupe that could allow the belt to slip through the anchor, providing no restraint in a crash. This is a critical safety defect. California owners of the 2020 E450 Coupe should confirm the repair was completed and retain the dealer's RO showing the recall remedy—any subsequent seatbelt concern on the same vehicle is an additional repair attempt.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and reroute the front left seatbelt as necessary, or replace it if the webbing is damaged, free of charge. The recall began May 22,2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020050001.

If the dealer repair required the vehicle to be held for multiple days awaiting seat components, those out-of-service days accumulate toward Song-Beverly's 30-day cumulative threshold.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the left-rear seatback latch, free of charge. The recall began August 17, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020070004.
engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall
Recall 20V364000 covers turbocharger failures on 2020 C300, E350, and GLC300 M264 engine vehicles that can cause oil leak and engine fire risk. An engine fire risk is a Catastrophic defect by definition; however, because the remedy is engine oil system inspection and turbo replacement—not a component redesign—recurrence after recall repair is possible. Any post-repair smoke, oil leak, or check-engine light on the same system must be returned to the dealer and documented immediately.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the turbocharger oil lines and tighten them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began August 17, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2020070017.

MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the mechanical seat adjustment range limitation for the front passenger seat and install it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-368-6372. MBUSA's number for this re
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Recall 21V058000 covers a software defect causing exterior lighting failure across 2017-2021 E-Class models. A lighting failure affecting turn signals, brake lights, or headlamps is a safety hazard under FMVSS and Song-Beverly. Owners who experienced repeated lighting warnings or failure events before or after the software update should compile all lighting-related ROs to document the repair pattern.
MBUSA will notify owners, and the communication module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. The recall began March 12, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021020025.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 21V072000 covers eCall communication module defects on 2017-2019 E-Class models. Owners whose vehicles required communication module replacement should retain their RO — if the module was replaced and communication services failed again, that recurrence is an additional repair attempt. Functional defects that recur after repair are cognizable under Song-Beverly even without a safety component.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the communication module and activate it, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began March 31, 2021. Letters for the owners of the 9 additional vehicles were mailed July 9, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 21V216000 is the second seat assembly recall for 2021 E-Class models within the same model year, covering E350, E450, E450 Wagon, and E63S AMG. Under FMVSS 111, a functional rearview camera is mandatory on vehicles so equipped. A camera display failure is a federal safety compliance defect. If the recall repair did not resolve the camera issue, California owners have a strong safety-based lemon claim independent of repair-attempt count.
All affected vehicles are still within MBUSA's control. MBUSA will replace the parking control unit, free of charge. The recall began April 8, 2021. Owner may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 21V230000 covers a broad cross-model seat assembly defect on 2021 C-Class, E-Class, and GLC. For E-Class owners, this is the third seat-system recall within 2020-2021—an extraordinary pattern. Song-Beverly does not require three attempts per individual recall; multiple attempts to fix the same general seat-safety defect across recalls can be aggregated if they address substantially similar conditions.
MBUSA will notify owners, and dealers will replace the seat position switches, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed May 21, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021040016.
backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted
Recall 21V354000 is the second rearview camera recall for 2021 E-Class models. Owners who experienced camera display failure before 21V228000 and then again before 21V354000 had two separate camera-system failures within the same model year—a pattern of recurring FMVSS 111 non-compliance that substantially impairs the vehicle's safety and use under Song-Beverly.
The multimedia system software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed beginning June 28, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6373. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021050012.
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 21V406000 addresses rear seat head restraint detachment risk on 2021 E-Class Cabriolet and other soft-top variants. Head restraint failure in a rear-end crash substantially increases whiplash and spinal injury risk. Owners who had difficulty scheduling the recall repair or who waited for backordered parts should document all out-of-service days for Song-Beverly's 30-day cumulative calculation.
Dealers will inspect the rear seatback guide bushings and replace them if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 16, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021060010.
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
Recall 21V483000 addresses rear seatbelt retractor defects on 2021 E350, E450, and AMG variants where the retractor may not lock properly in a crash. Combined with the multiple seat and seatbelt recalls affecting 2021 E-Class, this recall further establishes a pattern of occupant-protection deficiencies. California owners of 2021 E-Class with two or more occupant restraint repair visits have a viable lemon claim.
Dealers will inspect, and replace as necessary, the rear seat belt assemblies, free of charge. Owners notified of the voluntary recall campaign by an interim letter on August 13, 2021. A final letter was mailed on September 24, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 21V527000 addresses side-impact airbag sensor failures on 2021 E350, E450, and AMG E53 models that can cause non-deployment in a side-impact crash. Side airbag non-deployment is among the most serious safety recalls. Owners waiting extended periods for sensor replacement parts should document every day the vehicle is held at the dealer as out-of-service days under Song-Beverly's 30-day cumulative presumption.
Dealers will inspect and replace as necessary, the side impact crash sensors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2021070032/33.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 21V961000 covers fuel rail defects on 2019-2020 E300, C300, and G550 models where fuel rail failure can cause fuel leaks with fire risk. Fuel leak / fire risk is a safety defect under Song-Beverly. Owners should confirm the recall remedy was applied and document any fuel smell, fuel leak, or fire-adjacent symptoms post-repair as additional repair attempts.
Dealers will replace the fuel rail and fuel injectors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 22, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for the recall is 2022030003.
sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall
Recall 22V189000 addresses a steering wheel/column defect on 2021-2022 E-Class that can result in loss of directional control. Combined with prior steering recalls on the same platform, this represents a persistent steering-system reliability pattern. Owners of 2021-2022 E-Class who experienced steering complaints both before and after the recall repair have strong grounds for a Song-Beverly claim based on repeated unsuccessful repair attempts.
Dealers will update the hand detection control unit software for the DISTRONIC system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 6, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2022040010.
backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted
Recall 22V232000 addresses back-over prevention display function failures on 2019-2021 E-Class models. This is the third camera-display recall encompassing 2019-2021 E-Class. Owners experiencing camera failures across 21V354000 and 22V232000 repair events on the same vehicle have documented repeated attempts to fix the same federal safety-compliance defect, meeting Song-Beverly's threshold.
Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 15, 2022. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2022060007.
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Recall 22V365000 expands software-related lighting failure coverage to 2019-2021 E-Class models. Owners who experienced lighting defects across both 21V058000 and 22V365000 periods—with the same symptom not resolved by the first software update—have a compelling argument that the manufacturer repeatedly failed to repair the same defect, the core test under Song-Beverly §1793.2(d).
The communication module software will be updated through an Over-the-Air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 8, 2022. Owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, on July 8, 2022, May 17, 2024, July 29, 2024, and September 27, 2024. Owner
EV warning message; reduced power; charging fault; battery recall; fire risk warning
Recall 22V733000 addresses a 48V battery defect on 2019-2022 CLS450 and AMG E53 models where the 48V pack can fail, disabling EQ Boost and mild-hybrid functions. While not an immediate crash risk, loss of the 48V system disables start-stop, energy recovery, and supplemental torque—features central to the vehicle's marketed function. Repeated 48V battery failures under warranty support a Drivability/Reliability lemon claim under Song-Beverly.
Dealers will secure the 12V battery, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 20, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2022100009.
engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
Recall 23V445000 covers the Denso-pump impeller defect on 2021-2023 E-Class models. Engine stall at speed is a safety event under Song-Beverly regardless of whether an accident occurred. If the recall remedy has been applied and the vehicle stalls again, or if the owner experienced stalls prior to remedy availability, a lemon-law claim is strongly supported. Track dealer wait time for parts—a prolonged out-of-service period independently triggers California's 30-day cumulative threshold.
Dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 14, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2023070012.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 23V574000 covers blind-spot sensor failures on 2023 E-Class models that can cause the Active Blind Spot Assist system to fail, disabling an ADAS safety feature. While not every ADAS defect rises to catastrophic status, a system that fails to warn drivers of vehicles in the blind spot during lane changes creates real crash risk. Dealers with limited sensor inventory may hold vehicles for extended periods; document all out-of-service days under Song-Beverly's 30-day cumulative threshold.
Dealers will update the exit warning system software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 8, 2023. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2023080005.
engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
Recall 23V880000 is the second LPFP recall covering 2022-2023 E-Class models, expanding the Denso-impeller recall scope. Owners who experienced stalls and were previously told their VIN was not covered under 23V445000 should confirm coverage under 23V880000. If the vehicle stalled before the part was available, those pre-remedy stall events count toward Song-Beverly's repair-attempt threshold.
Dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 28, 2024. Owner notification letters will be mailed in phases, on February 23, 2024, April 19, 2024, June 28, 2024, August 9, 2024, October 1, 2024, and December 2, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA custo
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 24V100000 covers wiring defects on 2021-2023 E450, AMG E53, and AMG GT variants that can cause electrical system faults, including potential for short circuits. Wiring defects affecting multiple vehicle systems create compound safety risks. If the wiring repair is not completed in a single visit—or if electrical faults persist or new ones appear post-repair—each visit constitutes an additional repair attempt toward Song-Beverly eligibility.
Dealers will inspect the 48-volt ground cable connection and repair it as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 22, 2024. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2024MMNNNN.
warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 25V023000 addresses tire defects on 2018-2019 E400/E450 Cabriolet and Coupe models where tire structural failure can cause sudden deflation and loss of vehicle control. A tire recall is a safety defect. Owners who experienced a blowout or sudden deflation before the recall remedy was available should document those events as pre-remedy safety incidents supporting a Song-Beverly claim.
Dealers will inspect and replace the tires as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 7, 2025. Owners may contact MBUSA customer service at 1-800-367-6372. MBUSA's number for this recall is 2025010008.
Harsh or clunking 1-2 or 2-1 downshifts; delayed engagement from park or reverse; shudder or jerk under light acceleration at 25-40 mph; transmission hesitation on cold start; thud when selecting drive from park in traffic; check engine light with transmission fault codes
Transmission harsh shifting that recurs after multiple TCM reprogramming visits is a classic Song-Beverly lemon-law pattern: the defect is acknowledged, the remedy is repeatedly attempted, and the vehicle fails to conform to warranty. California owners who have returned for three or more transmission-related repair visits—or whose vehicle has been out of service 30+ days cumulatively—may meet the statutory presumption under Civil Code §1793.22. Document every RO with transmission complaint codes.
TCM software update via XENTRY dealer tool followed by transmission adaptation reset. If symptoms persist post-update, valve body replacement with fresh ATF fill. Confirmed by MBUSA TSB AL27.10-P-050XXX.
Vehicle sags to bump-stops overnight or after sitting; AIRMATIC WARNING or VISIT WORKSHOP message in instrument cluster; compressor runs continuously and overheats; one corner lower than others; harsh rigid ride after suspension drops; car undriveable until manually raised; strut replacement quotes of $3,000-$6,000 at dealer
If the AIRMATIC system fails repeatedly within the new-vehicle warranty period (4 years / 50,000 miles on the W213), multiple dealer visits for the same sagging or compressor fault support a Song-Beverly claim. The defect substantially impairs the vehicle's use and value. Owners should document each AIRMATIC-related RO separately and track total days out of service—strut and compressor orders frequently cause extended dealer wait times.
Air strut leak test; replace leaking struts (often all four as set). Replace compressor if overheated. Reprogram AIRMATIC control unit. Full repair cost $3,000-$6,000 at dealer; MBUSA extended warranty coverage varies — escalate to regional rep if within 5 yr / 50k mi.
Loud explosion-like bang from roof while driving; panoramic glass cracks or shatters without impact; glass fragments fall into cabin; event may occur at highway speed or while parked; no warning prior to failure; shattered glass on seats and occupants
A spontaneously shattering roof panel constitutes a safety defect under Song-Beverly because it poses direct occupant injury risk from falling glass. If the dealer replaces the panel and a second event occurs, or if MBUSA denies coverage and the vehicle is within warranty, that repair pattern may support a lemon-law claim. Occupant safety concerns are weighted heavily by arbitrators and courts under the substantial impairment standard.
Full panoramic glass panel replacement. No preventative fix available. MBUSA has replaced glass under goodwill or warranty case-by-case; escalate to MBUSA Customer Care for coverage outside warranty. Interim: avoid parking in direct sun for extended periods.
MBUX 12.3-inch widescreen freezes mid-use; full black screen requiring vehicle shutdown to restore; navigation, climate control, audio, and rearview camera all unavailable during freeze; system reboots spontaneously while driving; touchscreen unresponsive for minutes; loss of wireless CarPlay or Android Auto connection mid-trip
MBUX freeze that disables the rearview camera display is not merely a convenience defect — FMVSS 111 requires a functional backup camera, and a camera blackout during a repair attempt that the dealer cannot duplicate strengthens a lemon-law claim. Multiple dealer visits for infotainment freeze that result in software updates without resolution constitute repeated unsuccessful repair attempts under Song-Beverly §1793.2(d).
Dealer applies latest MBUX software update via XENTRY. If freezes persist, head unit module replacement under warranty. Wireless CarPlay drops may be partially resolved by software; full resolution may require head unit replacement. Recall 22V365000 software update may partially address some freeze scenarios.
48V EQ BOOST SYSTEM UNAVAILABLE or ISG-START FAULT warning; engine cranks slowly or fails to start despite 12V battery being good; EQ Boost regeneration and coasting unavailable; mild-hybrid functions disabled; 48V battery gauge drops to zero after short drive; vehicle requires flatbed tow after 48V pack is fully discharged
A 48V no-start condition that recurs after battery replacement is a recurring failure of a core powertrain system. Under Song-Beverly, California owners have the benefit of the §1793.22 presumption if the same no-start / battery defect has been attempted for repair twice or more within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles. EQ Boost failures that strand the driver also implicate the substantial-impairment standard regardless of repair count.
48V battery pack replacement under warranty (covered under 4-year / 50,000-mile new vehicle warranty or 8-year / 100,000-mile battery warranty if applicable). Update 48V BMS software after replacement. If out of warranty, MBUSA goodwill escalation recommended.
Sudden uninitiated hard braking while Drive Pilot (active cruise control) is engaged at highway speed; brief full deceleration with no obstacle present; rear-end collision risk; DISTRONIC PLUS fault message after event; system disengages without driver input; phantom braking occurs in clear conditions on open highway
Phantom braking by an active safety system creates a rear-end collision risk and is a safety defect under Song-Beverly, not merely a nuisance. If the dealer cannot reproduce the event ('cannot duplicate'), California's cannot-replicate doctrine still allows a lemon-law claim when the owner can demonstrate a documented pattern. Each phantom-braking event should be reported to NHTSA (nhtsa.gov/report-a-safety-problem) and the dealer contemporaneously to build an evidentiary record.
MBUSA issues DISTRONIC PLUS software updates via recall or service bulletin to refine object-classification thresholds. If phantom braking persists post-software-update, radar sensor replacement may be required. Document every phantom-braking event with date, location, and speed for dealer/MBUSA escalation.
Engine stalls without warning at any speed; no-start after stall; rough idle or hesitation before stall; check engine light with fuel pressure fault codes P0087 or P0088; engine cranks but does not fire; fuel pump audible whine before failure
Engine stall at highway speed is a safety defect, not a drivability inconvenience. Owners who paid out-of-pocket for LPFP replacement before the formal recall was issued may be entitled to reimbursement under MBUSA's recall remedy program. Under Song-Beverly, a vehicle that stalled and required towing, was repaired, and stalled again before the recall remedy was available likely meets the substantial-impairment and repeated-repair thresholds. Obtain all pre-recall repair orders to document the timeline.
Replace LPFP assembly. Inspect and flush high-pressure fuel pump if contaminated. Update engine ECU calibration. Covered by recall 23V445000 or 23V880000 if vehicle VIN falls within scope; pre-recall repairs should have warranty reimbursement requested from MBUSA.

Every item below comes from this vehicle's documented defects. The more you recognize, the more a free case review is worth your time.
California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act provides among the strongest lemon protections in the nation, and W213 owners benefit fully.
THE PRESUMPTION: Under Civil Code §1793.22, a rebuttable lemon presumption arises if, within 18 months of delivery or 18,000 miles: (a) the manufacturer made two or more repair attempts for a defect that could cause death or serious bodily injury—steering loss, airbag failure, engine stall at speed, fuel leak; (b) four or more attempts for the same warranty defect; or (c) the vehicle was out of service for 30 or more cumulative calendar days.
HOW THE W213 TRIGGERS THESE THRESHOLDS: Six steering recalls, five airbag recalls, and three fuel pump recalls each involve death-risk defects—meaning TWO repair attempts for any one of these triggers the presumption. Owners who returned the car twice for LPFP stalls, EPS failures, or airbag warnings are presumptively entitled to a buyback.
THE 30-DAY RULE: Days waiting for recall parts—seat assemblies, radar sensors, wiring harnesses—count even if the car is technically driveable. A single AIRMATIC repair plus one fuel pump repair can easily exceed 30 cumulative days.
YOUR REMEDY: MBUSA must repurchase the vehicle at the original purchase price minus a statutory mileage offset—or provide a comparable replacement. MBUSA pays your attorney fees; you bear no legal cost to pursue the claim.
“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.
Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.
Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.
Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.
Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.
Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.
Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.
Cannot-replicate closures are common on W213 because key defects are intermittent: LPFP failures stall at certain fuel levels; MBUX freezes appear after hours of uptime; DISTRONIC phantom braking is triggered by specific road geometry.
1. DOCUMENT SAME DAY. Record date, time, speed, warning messages, and conditions. Photograph cluster warnings before they clear.
2. CALL THE DEALER IMMEDIATELY even if the car restarted. Get an RO opened that day. California law counts the complaint date, not the confirmed-repair date.
3. FOR STALLS: Request a fuel-pressure log. Ask the advisor to run XENTRY real-time fuel pressure during a road test rather than only checking stored codes—LPFP failures often leave no fault if the pump temporarily recovered.
4. FOR TRANSMISSION SHUDDER: Arrive cold. The 9G-Tronic calibration issue presents most clearly in the first 5-10 minutes; ask the advisor to road-test cold before the engine warms up.
5. FOR MBUX FREEZES: The freeze is most likely after 2+ hours of continuous operation. If the dealer says normal, ask them to leave the car running for two hours and test.
6. FOR AIRMATIC: Show time-stamped photos of the sagging car. Ask the dealer to perform the leak-down test (TSB LI32.20-P-062XXX) rather than only checking static ride height.
7. REQUEST WRITTEN DENIAL. If the RO closes as 'no problem found,' ask the dealer to document what diagnostics were performed and why the complaint could not be reproduced. That written denial is evidence in a lemon-law filing.
8. ESCALATE TO MBUSA CUSTOMER CARE after the second CNP closure. Open a case number; MBUSA's response—or silence—is admissible evidence.
The W213 E-Class is a genuinely accomplished automobile when it works—the M256 inline-six is exceptional, MBUX was revolutionary in 2019, and AIRMATIC transforms ride quality. But three fuel pump recall campaigns across seven years, nine occupant-restraint recalls across three model years, and a TSB-acknowledged transmission calibration flaw the 9G-Tronic should never have shipped with tell a story of engineering ambition outpacing manufacturing discipline.
California buyers still servicing a six-figure loan on a car the dealer knows by name deserve better. The Song-Beverly Act exists for exactly this situation. Get a free case review before the statute of limitations runs.
— The Margarian Law team
If your Mercedes-Benz E-Class (2017-2023) has been to the dealer multiple times for fuel pump stalls, steering failures, seat recalls, or transmission problems, you may qualify for a California lemon-law buyback. Margarian Law has handled thousands of lemon cases against Mercedes-Benz and offers a completely free case review—MBUSA pays our fees if you prevail. Contact us today.
The most common cause of stalling and no-start on the W213 E-Class is low-pressure fuel pump (LPFP) failure—a defect that MBUSA acknowledged across three NHTSA recalls (16V758000 for 2017, 23V445000 for 2021-2023, and 23V880000 for 2022-2023). The Denso LPFP impeller swells when exposed to ethanol-blended gasoline, restricts fuel flow to the high-pressure pump, and causes the engine to stall without warning at any speed. Check nhtsa.gov/recalls with your VIN to confirm open recall status. If your VIN is covered, the dealer must replace the pump at no cost. If you paid for this repair before the recall was issued, contact MBUSA Customer Care to request reimbursement. Multiple stall events—especially if the car required towing—may qualify you for a California lemon-law claim. []
Possibly yes — and the W213 E-Class has one of the strongest recall records in its segment to support a claim. Under California's Song-Beverly Act (Civil Code §1793.22), a rebuttable lemon presumption arises if your E-Class: (a) has had two or more repair attempts for a safety defect such as engine stall (fuel pump recalls), loss of steering assist (six steering recalls), or airbag failure (five airbag recalls); or (b) four or more attempts for any warranty defect; or (c) has been out of service for 30 cumulative days within the first 18 months or 18,000 miles. The statute covers all warranty-covered repairs — recall-related or not. If you qualify, MBUSA must repurchase your vehicle at the original purchase price minus a statutory mileage offset. Attorney fees are paid by MBUSA, not you. Contact Margarian Law for a free case review to assess your specific repair history. []
The W213 E-Class uses the Mercedes 9G-Tronic 725.0 nine-speed automatic, which has a well-documented TCM software calibration issue causing harsh 1-2 downshifts, shudder at 25-40 mph under light throttle, and delayed engagement from park or reverse. MBUSA acknowledged the problem via a technical service bulletin (approx. TSB AL27.10-P-050XXX) and instructs dealers to update the TCM software via XENTRY diagnostics and perform a transmission adaptation reset. If the software update does not resolve the issue, valve body replacement is the next step. To get the best result at the dealer: bring the car cold — the harshness is most pronounced in the first 5-10 minutes of operation. If you've had the transmission software updated twice or more and the shifting is still harsh, that repair pattern may qualify for California's lemon law. []
AIRMATIC suspension sagging on the W213 E-Class (E400, E450, AMG E53, AMG E63) is caused by air-spring bladder micro-tears that develop between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. As air slowly leaks from the strut, the compressor compensates by running continuously until it overheats and burns out — the failure mode goes from 'slow sag' to 'rides on bumpstops' quickly once the compressor fails. MBUSA issued TSB LI32.20-P-062XXX covering diagnosis and replacement of struts and the compressor. The full repair costs $3,000-$6,000 at the dealer. If your vehicle is within 5 years or 50,000 miles, request warranty coverage and escalate to MBUSA's regional technical representative if denied. If the AIRMATIC failure occurred during the new-vehicle warranty period and required multiple dealer visits to resolve, it may qualify as a California lemon-law defect. []
MBUX 1.0 freeze and black-screen events on 2018-2022 E-Class are caused by a memory-leak vulnerability in the MBUX head unit's Nvidia Tegra firmware. When the screen blacks out, it takes the rearview camera display with it — a federal safety concern under FMVSS 111. Three NHTSA rearview camera recalls (21V228000, 21V354000, 22V232000) addressed related software bugs, but the underlying MBUX 1.0 hardware cannot receive MBUX 2.0 updates. Your dealer can apply the latest XENTRY software patch and, if freezes continue, replace the head unit module under warranty. Key steps: (1) Note the time since startup when the freeze occurs — if consistently after 2+ hours of operation, tell the dealer; (2) confirm your VIN's status under the camera recalls at nhtsa.gov/recalls; (3) if freeze events occur post-recall-remedy, each recurrence is an additional repair attempt toward Song-Beverly lemon eligibility. []
The W213 E-Class carries 47 NHTSA recalls across 2017-2023 production, spanning fuel pumps, airbags, steering systems, seat assemblies, seatbelts, rearview cameras, wiring, and both 12V and 48V batteries. For California owners, the key question is not just how many recalls exist, but whether you returned the car two or more times for a safety-related defect, or four or more times for any warranty defect, within the first 18 months / 18,000 miles — or whether the car accumulated 30+ out-of-service days while under warranty. Recall repairs and TSB visits both count. If the dealer replaced your fuel pump and then your steering system and then your seat assembly — all on separate ROs — and your car was at the dealer for a cumulative month or more, you likely have a viable claim even if no single issue crossed the threshold alone. Margarian Law reviews E-Class cases at no cost; MBUSA pays attorney fees if you prevail. []
