The overview

What owners are dealing with

You chose the Lincoln Nautilus because you wanted something better than a Ford in a luxury wrapper — serene cabin, standard Co-Pilot360, an available 2.7-liter twin-turbo that makes 335 horsepower on a platform shared with the Edge ST. The Nautilus delivered on refinement. What Ford's engineers struggled to deliver was a functioning transmission, a reliable automatic braking system, and instrument electronics that would not go dark on the highway.

The 2019 model year — the Nautilus's debut — became its most troubled. NHTSA received 92 complaints from 2019 owners and catalogued 195 Technical Service Bulletins for that model year alone. The most common complaint: the 8F35 8-speed automatic transmission clunked, shuddered, and lurched from the moment buyers drove off the lot — some reporting symptoms within 50 miles. Ford issued TSB 19-2103 directing PCM reprogramming, then issued TSB 19-2288 telling dealers to stop attempting repairs while engineering worked on a new calibration. Owners were left with an unresolved powertrain defect by the manufacturer's own instruction.

The problems compound across the model years. The 2019 Nautilus carries two separate recall campaigns for a blank instrument cluster (19V076000 and 26V372000) — NHTSA's way of acknowledging the original fix failed. The steering Lane Center Assist software defect (19V031000) also required a second recall (26V377000) for the same vehicles. The 2020-2023 model years add rearview camera software failures across multiple recall campaigns, a driveshaft seizure risk, and a 2021-2022 engine intake valve fracture recall (24V635000) that left many owners waiting months for parts while their vehicles sat immobilized at the dealer.

For California owners, what matters most is this: fourteen formal recalls, two pairs of failed-then-repeated recall campaigns on the same defects, and a transmission complaint pattern so widespread that Ford's own service bulletins told dealers they had no fix. If your Nautilus has been to the dealer more than once for any of these issues, you may have more legal options than Lincoln customer care will ever suggest.

Airbag / Occupant Detection Defect - Airbag May Not Deploy CorrectlySafety2019
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 18V806000 covers a driver airbag module cover that may detach during deployment and become a projectile, injuring occupants in the cabin. If your 2019 Nautilus received this recall repair and the airbag warning light returned — or if the airbag module was replaced and a subsequent deployment-related incident occurred — each visit is a repair attempt for a safety defect under Song-Beverly. California law specifically presumed lemon status when a defect capable of causing death or injury is subject to two unsuccessful repair attempts (Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(b)).

Typical fix

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver air bag module, free of charge. The recall began December 7, 2018. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 18S38.

Steering Defect — Lane Center Assist Hands-Off Detection Failure — Recall 19V031000 (2019)Safety2019
Symptoms

sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 19V031000 addresses the Lane Center Assist system failing to alert when hands are removed from the wheel — undermining a core Co-Pilot360 safety handoff. Ford issued a second recall (26V377000) for the same 2019 VINs where the initial software fix did not hold, making this the rarest lemon-law scenario: a safety recall with a documented failed remedy requiring a second recall campaign. Owners who experienced the Lane Center fault before, during, or after either recall repair have documented repair attempts that may satisfy Song-Beverly eligibility.

Typical fix

Ford has notified owners, and dealers will update the Power Steering Control Module software, free of charge. The recall began on January 25, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S02.

Electrical Instrument Cluster Blank Display — Recall 19V076000 (2019)Safety2019
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 19V076000 covers the Instrument Panel Cluster going blank at startup, depriving the driver of speedometer, fuel level, and warning indicators — a safety defect because speed is a mandatory display under FMVSS. Ford issued a second recall (26V372000) for the same 2019 VINs where blank-display symptoms recurred despite the initial fix, confirming the remedy was not durable. Owners with documented visits for blank instrument panels across two separate recall campaigns have a strong two-attempt record for the same defect under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(d)(1).

Typical fix

Ford has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the Instrument Panel Cluster Assembly (IPC), free of charge. The recall began March 8, 2019. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C03.

Front Seat Cushion Frame Wire Harness Contact / Airbag Risk — Recall 20V414000 (2019-2020)Safety2019-2020
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 20V414000 covers a front seat power-tilt mechanism that allows the cushion frame to cut into the wire harness, potentially causing unintended airbag deployment or deployment failure in a crash. Because this defect creates risk both from spurious deployment (occupant injury without collision) and from non-deployment in a crash, it meets the heightened safety standard under Song-Beverly. Owners of 2019-2020 Nautilus who used the seat tilt function before the recall remedy was applied have a documented exposure to this defect; repair orders from any dealer visit for seat or airbag warning light issues during that period count as repair attempts.

Typical fix

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will install protective flocking tape onto the exposed edge of the 16-way seat cushion frames, and inspect the wire harness for damage, and repair or replace it as needed, free of charge. This recall began August 12, 2020. Owners may contact Ford/Lincoln customer

Transmission Start/Stop Accumulator Endcap Loose Bolts / Fluid Leak Risk — Recall 20V550000 (2019-2020)Safety2019-2020
Symptoms

transmission shifts unexpectedly; hesitation; harsh shift; transmission warning

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 20V550000 addresses missing or loose bolts on the transmission start/stop accumulator endcap, creating risk of transmission fluid leakage. Fluid on hot exhaust components creates a fire hazard — the second most serious outcome classification. Owners who noticed transmission fluid puddles or burning smells before the recall remedy was applied should document those dealer visits. If the endcap was repaired and a subsequent fluid leak was attributed to the same component, the second repair attempt supports Song-Beverly eligibility for a defect posing fire risk.

Typical fix

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the start/stop accumulator, free of charge. The recall began September 23, 2020. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 20S49.

Rearview Camera Blank or Distorted Image — Recall 20V575000 (2020, Electrical Connection)Safety2020
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 20V575000 covers a poor electrical connection causing the 2020 Nautilus's rearview camera to intermittently show blank or distorted images while backing — a direct safety risk under FMVSS backup camera requirements. The 2020 Nautilus is also covered by a second rearview camera recall (25V442000, software-related), meaning some VINs have two separate camera recalls. Owners experiencing camera blackout after either remedy was applied have documented a failed repair attempt for a FMVSS-required safety feature.

Typical fix

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rearview camera, free of charge. The recall began November 17, 2020. Remedy became available on February 1, 2021. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 1, 2021. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's numbe

Driveshaft Separation - Loss of Drive PowerCatastrophic2020
Symptoms

clunking from drivetrain; loss of drive power; vehicle may roll when parked

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V011000 covers insufficient lubrication in the rear drive unit causing axle seizure and potential loss of vehicle control on 2020 AWD Nautilus models. Driveshaft seizure at speed can result in sudden loss of propulsion or — in the most severe cases — driveshaft separation creating a road hazard. This is a safety defect at the Catastrophic threshold because it can cause non-collision loss of control. Any owner who experienced rear drivetrain noise, vibration, or resistance before the recall remedy and brought the vehicle to the dealer should count those pre-recall visits as repair attempts under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(d).

Typical fix

Ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the rear drive unit lubricant level. Axles found to have lubricant at the minimum level will be filled to the full level. Axles found to be below the minimum lubricant fill level will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began March 12, 2021. Owner

Seat Fastener Structural Defect — Recall 23V198000 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V198000 covers a seat fastener defect in 2023 Nautilus models that may compromise seat structural integrity in a crash. Seat failure in a collision is a safety defect under FMVSS and Song-Beverly. Owners who noticed seat looseness, movement, or unusual sounds from seat attachment points before the recall was applied should document those prior dealer visits. If the fastener repair does not permanently secure the seat and a second visit is required, that constitutes a second repair attempt for a safety defect.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the left-side second-row seat back frame, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed May 11, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23C09.

Brake System / Co-Pilot360 Reduced Brake Assist or Unexpected Braking — Recall 23V439000 (2023)Safety2023
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V439000 addresses a 2023 Nautilus brake system defect producing reduced brake assist or unexpected automatic braking events — consistent with the phantom-braking pattern reported across the Co-Pilot360 product family. A vehicle that unexpectedly brakes hard at highway speed or fails to provide adequate brake assist creates acute collision risk. Owners who experienced sudden braking events or soft pedal feel before the recall was applied have pre-recall dealer visits that count as repair attempts. If symptoms persist after the recall remedy, escalate immediately and preserve all repair orders — each visit to the dealer for the same AEB/brake defect is a documented attempt under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealers will inspect and replace the rear shocks, rear brake hoses, rear wheel speed sensor, and rear half shafts as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 17, 2023. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S32.

Engine Internal Failure Risk - Stall, Power Loss, or FireSafety2021-2022
Symptoms

engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 24V635000 addresses fractured engine intake valves that can cause complete engine failure and sudden loss of drive power at any speed — a crash risk. The 2021-2022 Nautilus with this defect may lose propulsion without warning. NHTSA complaint data documents significant parts shortages delaying the remedy, leaving owners with an unrepaired safety defect for months. Under Song-Beverly, a vehicle out of service awaiting recall parts for 30 or more cumulative days triggers a separate lemon presumption (Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(b)(2)). Owners should document every day the vehicle is at the dealer awaiting parts, including all loaner and rental arrangements.

Typical fix

Dealers will perform an engine cycle test and replace the engine as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 3, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 24S55.

Rearview Camera Display Freeze or Delay — Recall 25V315000 (2021-2023, Software)Safety2021-2023
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V315000 covers a software defect causing the rearview camera display to freeze, delay, or show a static image instead of live video on 2021-2023 Nautilus models. A frozen backup camera showing a static prior image while the vehicle is in reverse is more dangerous than a blank screen — the driver believes they are seeing current conditions while the view is actually stale. NHTSA complaints cite 9-10 second camera delays. If the software update did not permanently resolve the freeze or delay, each return visit for the same symptom is a repair attempt under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

The accessory protocol interface module (APIM) software will be updated by a dealer or through an over-the-air update, free of charge. This will be a phased campaign, with the remedy becoming available in different phases based on model and model years. Interim letters notifying owners of the safety

Rearview Camera Software Error — Blank Image or Persistent Display — Recall 25V442000 (2019-2020)Safety2019-2020
Symptoms

backup camera blank; screen goes black in reverse; rearview camera distorted

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V442000 addresses a software error that may cause the 2019-2020 Nautilus rearview camera to show a blank image when in reverse or to remain displayed after the vehicle exits reverse — a distraction and visibility defect. Combined with iss-06 (recall 20V575000, electrical connection fault), some 2020 Nautilus VINs have two separate recalls affecting the same rearview camera system. Owners should verify whether both recalls have been applied; if camera issues persisted after the first recall remedy and prior to the second, those interim dealer visits are documented repair attempts for the camera defect under Song-Beverly.

Typical fix

Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.

Electrical Instrument Cluster Blank Display Follow-Up — Recall 26V372000 (2019, Second Campaign)Safety2019
Symptoms

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 26V372000 is a second recall campaign for 2019 Nautilus VINs already covered by recall 19V076000 — a direct NHTSA acknowledgment that the original IPC blank-display fix was not durable. Two separate NHTSA recall campaigns for the same instrument cluster defect on the same VINs is powerful Song-Beverly evidence: it demonstrates the defect could not be repaired within a reasonable number of attempts using the manufacturer's own repair procedures. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(d), owners with repair orders documenting blank-display symptoms before, between, and after both recall campaigns likely have repair-attempt counts well above the two-attempt minimum for safety defects.

Typical fix

Dealers will reprogram the Instrument Panel Cluster Assembly (IPC) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. 2026. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26C27. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involve

Steering Defect — Lane Center Assist Follow-Up Software Failure — Recall 26V377000 (2019, Second Campaign)Safety2019
Symptoms

sticky steering; steering wheel feels stuck; increased steering effort; steering recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 26V377000 is a second NHTSA campaign for 2019 Nautilus VINs already remedied under recall 19V031000 for the Lane Center Assist hands-off detection failure. Ford's initial software update did not hold, requiring a second recall — confirming two failed repair attempts by the manufacturer's own count. Under Song-Beverly's heightened two-attempt standard for defects posing risk of death or serious injury (Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(b)(1)), owners of 2019 Nautilus vehicles covered by both 19V031000 and 26V377000 may already have presumptive lemon status based on the dual recall record alone, before counting any additional dealer visits.

Typical fix

Dealers will update the power steering control module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6. 2026. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 26S44. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this rec

8F35/8F57 8-Speed Harsh Shift, Shudder, and Engagement Clunk — TSBs 19-2103 / 19-2288 / 21-2389Drivability/Reliability2019-2023
Symptoms

violent clunk when shifting from Park to Drive or Reverse to Drive; harsh upshifts and downshifts in lower gears; shuddering or vibrating sensation at 20-45 mph under light throttle; transmission hesitation before engaging; lurching during slow acceleration; slipping out of gear; torque converter shudder at highway cruise; symptoms present as low as 50-450 miles from new

Why it matters for your claim

The 8F35/8F57 harsh-shift defect is the highest-volume complaint for the Nautilus and the classic Song-Beverly repeat-repair scenario: multiple PCM reprogram attempts that fail to permanently resolve the condition, followed by fluid service, then converter replacement, then in some cases full transmission replacement — each attempt documented on a repair order. Ford's own TSB 19-2288 acknowledges no fix existed while engineering worked on a calibration, meaning dealers were directed to effectively leave owners with an unresolved defect. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(d), two or more unsuccessful repair attempts for the same defect may establish lemon-law eligibility. The unusually early onset (under 1,000 miles in some cases) strengthens the argument that the vehicle was nonconforming at delivery.

Typical fix

Step 1: PCM reprogram per TSB 19-2103. Step 2: If unresolved, TSB 19-2288 hold pending new calibration. Step 3: Mercon ULV fluid flush per TSB 21-2389 if shudder persists. Step 4: Torque converter replacement if flush does not resolve shudder. Full transmission replacement has been required in severe cases ($7,000-$9,000). Adaptive reset required after all transmission work.

2.7L EcoBoost V6 Cam Phaser Rattle at Cold Start / Elevated Oil ConsumptionDrivability/Reliability2019-2023
Symptoms

loud metallic rattling or ticking noise from engine on cold start lasting 5-30 seconds; noise diminishes as oil pressure builds; rattle more pronounced in cold weather; oil level drops between changes requiring top-offs; burning oil smell from engine bay; check engine light with cam phaser or VCT system codes; engine rough idle during warm-up

Why it matters for your claim

Cam phaser rattle accompanied by oil consumption that persists after one or more dealer visits represents a Drivability/Reliability defect affecting engine longevity. If the dealer replaces phasers and the rattle returns — or if oil consumption is never resolved — each return visit counts as a repair attempt under Song-Beverly. An owner who has documented three or more visits for the same engine noise without permanent resolution, and who has the condition linked to a manufacturer-acknowledged TSB, is in a strong position to assert lemon-law eligibility.

Typical fix

Ford TSB for 2.7L cam phaser rattle: verify oil level and condition; update PCM to latest calibration for VCT control; if rattle persists, replace cam phaser assemblies (both intake and exhaust, both banks) under powertrain warranty. Oil consumption above 1 qt/1,000 mi may warrant piston ring inspection. Ensure vehicle is on Ford-approved oil weight (5W-30 or 0W-30 full synthetic per owner's manual).

SYNC 3 / SYNC 4 Infotainment System Freeze, Black Screen, and Wireless CarPlay DropoutFunctional2019-2023
Symptoms

touchscreen goes black or freezes mid-use requiring system reboot; navigation stops mid-route or provides erratic directions; wireless Apple CarPlay drops connection repeatedly; display freezes when incoming call received; SYNC reboots spontaneously while driving; audio cuts out; GPS tracking unreliable; screen remains black for extended period after startup

Why it matters for your claim

Infotainment system failures that impair safety-critical functions — navigation, rear camera display, or CarPlay while driving — may rise above 'Functional' to a use-impairment standard under Song-Beverly. If the SYNC system has required multiple dealer visits without permanent resolution, and the malfunction affects any safety feature (backup camera view, collision alerts displayed on screen), the owner should document each visit separately on repair orders citing the specific symptom. Accumulated infotainment repairs combined with other defects may push total repair attempts to the lemon threshold.

Typical fix

Ford dealer: update APIM module software to latest OTA release; if freeze persists, APIM module replacement may be required. Wireless CarPlay dropout: update to latest SYNC software; some owners require APIM reflash or replacement. Navigation issues: GPS antenna inspection and APIM reprogram.

Co-Pilot360 Phantom Automatic Emergency Braking and Cascading ADAS System FailureSafety2019-2023
Symptoms

vehicle brakes hard without warning at highway speed with no obstacle present; automatic emergency braking (AEB) activates on shadows, overpasses, or passing trucks; pre-collision warning alarm sounds repeatedly without cause; BLIS blind-spot system, backup camera, hill start assist, auto hold, and parking brake fail in sequence; powertrain warning follows cascading ADAS failures; adaptive cruise control disengages unexpectedly; dealer states 'this is normal behavior'

Why it matters for your claim

Phantom AEB activation at highway speed — decelerating from 70 to 40 mph in 2-3 seconds without cause — is a safety defect under Song-Beverly: it creates acute rear-end collision risk. If a dealer has been told about this event and documented 'cannot duplicate' or 'normal behavior,' that denial is itself a repair attempt under California law. Two repair attempts or two documented incidents tied to the same ADAS failure mode — especially involving the braking system — are sufficient to begin a Song-Beverly claim for a safety-impairing defect. Obtain and preserve the Event Data Recorder (EDR) data from any phantom-braking incident.

Typical fix

Ford dealer: update Co-Pilot360 radar/camera firmware to latest calibration; inspect forward radar sensor alignment and forward camera lens for contamination; APIM reprogram if cascading fault codes present. If phantom braking persists after firmware update, radar module replacement may be required. Verify recall 23V439000 remedy applied for 2023 MY.

Panoramic Vista Roof Glass Spontaneous Shattering or CrackingSafety2019-2023
Symptoms

panoramic moonroof glass cracks or shatters without impact while parked or driving; loud pop followed by glass breaking into laminated pieces; inner glass layer remains intact but outer layer spiders; glass shards fall into cabin; moonroof inoperative after shattering; cracking begins at edge or mounting bracket area

Why it matters for your claim

Spontaneous panoramic roof shattering while the vehicle is in motion poses a safety risk to occupants from glass debris and potential loss of structural integrity. If the dealer denies warranty coverage claiming 'impact damage,' the owner should document the fracture pattern with photographs and, if available, dashcam footage showing no projectile impact occurred. A second shattering event after glass panel replacement would establish a repeat repair of a safety-impairing defect under Song-Beverly, particularly given the safety risk to occupants from glass in the cabin.

Typical fix

Dealer inspection to determine whether shattering was impact-caused or spontaneous. If spontaneous: full panoramic roof glass panel replacement under warranty. Ford typically requires evidence of no impact (absence of impact point on inner glass) before approving warranty coverage. Dispute denial with dated photos showing fracture pattern origin at edge or bracket point.

Electric Power Steering Torque Assist Failure / Steering Column Electrical FaultSafety2019-2023
Symptoms

steering wheel suddenly becomes very heavy requiring excessive effort; power steering assist disappears at low speed or during parking maneuvers; steering column tilt and telescopic adjustments move independently while driving; steering warning light illuminates; column pins or restricts occupant during a turn; condition clears on restart but recurs

Why it matters for your claim

Sudden loss of power steering assist is a safety defect that substantially impairs the vehicle's safe operation — a textbook Song-Beverly qualifying defect. The Nautilus has two separate recall campaigns for steering-system software (19V031000 and 26V377000), and documented owner complaints of power-assist loss and autonomous column movement independent of those recalls. Any owner who experienced steering resistance or uncontrolled column movement and brought the vehicle in should review their repair orders: if the dealer applied the recall software update and steering problems persisted, that is a second repair attempt for a safety defect under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(d).

Typical fix

Recall 19V031000 / 26V377000: Lane Center Assist software update. For EPS torque loss: power steering module software update; if loss persists, power steering motor or rack-and-pinion replacement. Steering column motion fault (2023): steering column motor assembly replacement and column control module reprogram.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1790 et seq.) is the strongest vehicle-warranty law in the United States. The following is general legal information as of 2026 — not legal advice; no attorney-client relationship is created.

Under Song-Beverly, if Ford cannot repair a defect that substantially impairs the Nautilus's use, value, or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a vehicle replacement or a full refund (buyback). California law presumes a vehicle is a lemon if:

  • A defect capable of causing death or serious bodily injury has been subject to two or more unsuccessful repair attempts; OR
  • Any warranty defect has required four or more repair attempts without success; OR
  • The vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days while awaiting repair (Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(b)).

For the Nautilus, the most compelling lemon angles are:

Dual-failed recalls (2019 MY): Ford has issued two separate recall campaigns each for the instrument cluster (19V076000 → 26V372000) and the steering system (19V031000 → 26V377000). Each pair of campaigns constitutes two manufacturer-acknowledged attempts to repair the same safety defect — potentially satisfying the two-attempt standard by the recall record alone.

Transmission (all MY): The 8F35/8F57 harsh-shift defect was acknowledged in TSBs but declared unrepairable in TSB 19-2288. If you have repair orders for PCM reprogram, fluid service, and converter replacement across multiple visits, those are cumulative repair attempts for the same defect.

Engine parts shortage (2021-2022): Recall 24V635000 parts delays that left vehicles at the dealer for weeks or months may independently satisfy the 30-day out-of-service lemon presumption.

A buyback entitles you to the full purchase price (less a mileage offset for pre-complaint driving), plus incidental damages — registration, tow fees, and rental car costs. Under Song-Beverly, Ford must also pay your attorney's fees if you prevail, which is why legal representation at no out-of-pocket cost to you is typically available.

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Lincoln Nautilus specifically

The Nautilus's most frustrating defects are intermittent — the transmission clunk that the dealer cannot reproduce on a warm-engine drive, the camera that works fine on a summer morning but freezes in February. Here is what to do:

1. Demand a written repair order every single visit — even when the dealer says 'could not duplicate.' The date, mileage, and your written complaint description are what matters under Song-Beverly, not whether the dealer confirmed the fault. A 'could not duplicate' notation is still a documented repair attempt.

2. Record the symptom before you bring the car in. A date-stamped phone video of the transmission clunk or ADAS phantom brake event is evidence the service writer cannot dismiss. Email it to the advisor and ask them to attach it to the repair order file.

3. For the 8-speed transmission shudder, the condition is most reproducible: (a) after an overnight cold soak, (b) at 15-45 mph in light throttle, and (c) when coming to a stop from 30 mph. Ask the service advisor to perform a cold-start road test — not a warm-engine lot drive. If they won't do it, document that refusal on the repair order.

4. For phantom braking, ask the dealer to pull the Event Data Recorder (EDR). A sudden deceleration event at highway speed with no radar target detected is visible in the EDR data and cannot be dismissed as driver error. If the dealer will not retrieve EDR data, note that in writing.

5. Check your recall status at nhtsa.gov/recalls before each dealer visit. For 2019 Nautilus, specifically verify that BOTH 19V076000 AND 26V372000 (instrument cluster) and BOTH 19V031000 AND 26V377000 (steering) have been applied. If only one campaign was done, the second is still open — bring a printout and ask specifically.

6. Log every out-of-service day with the vehicle at the dealer. If your 2021-2022 Nautilus is waiting for 24V635000 intake valve parts, track each calendar day it is not in your driveway. Thirty cumulative days at a dealership creates a separate lemon presumption under California law, entirely apart from repair-attempt counts.

7. If the SYNC screen freezes and the dealer applies a software update: retain that repair order. If it freezes again after the update, that second visit is your second documented repair attempt for the same infotainment defect — relevant if SYNC failures also affect the backup camera or safety alert displays.

Our take

The Lincoln Nautilus CD4 generation has a recall record that is, in some ways, unprecedented in the Lincoln lineup: two pairs of safety recalls that each required a second campaign because the first fix failed, plus a dominant transmission complaint pattern that Ford's own service bulletins acknowledged was unresolved. That is not a minor quality-control footnote — it is a manufacturer-documented admission that the remedy for a widespread powertrain defect did not exist at the time dealers were instructed to stop trying. If you own a 2019-2023 Nautilus and have visited the dealer more than once for transmission behavior, camera failures, instrument display issues, or ADAS phantom braking, your repair order stack may already meet California's lemon-law threshold. These issues did not arise from unusual use — they arose from how the vehicle was designed and shipped from the factory.

FAQ

Lincoln Nautilus lemon-law questions

Why does my 2019 Lincoln Nautilus transmission clunk or shudder from almost new?

The 2019 Lincoln Nautilus uses the 8F35 8-speed automatic transmission — a unit with a well-documented harsh-shift and shudder problem that Ford acknowledged in TSB 19-2103 (PCM reprogram) and then effectively placed on hold in TSB 19-2288, which directed dealers not to attempt further repairs while engineering developed a new calibration. NHTSA received 92 complaints for the 2019 model year, with transmission issues accounting for approximately 28 — the largest single category. Symptoms including Park-to-Drive clunks and 20-45 mph shudder were reported as early as 50 miles from new. If your dealer has applied a PCM reprogram and the condition returned, that second visit is a second documented repair attempt under California's Song-Beverly lemon law. Preserve every repair order with a description of the specific symptom.

My 2019 Lincoln Nautilus had the instrument cluster recall fixed — why is it blank again?

Because Ford had to issue a second recall campaign for the same defect. NHTSA Recall 19V076000 addressed the 2019 Nautilus Instrument Panel Cluster going blank at startup. When that fix proved insufficient, NHTSA issued Recall 26V372000 — a follow-up campaign for the same 2019 VINs. Two separate NHTSA campaigns for the same instrument cluster defect on the same vehicle is an unusual and legally significant fact: it demonstrates that the manufacturer could not repair the defect within the first attempt. Under California's Song-Beverly Act, a defect that required two recall campaigns may already satisfy the two-attempt repair standard for a safety-related defect. Verify at nhtsa.gov/recalls whether both 19V076000 and 26V372000 have been applied to your specific VIN. If the cluster goes blank after both were applied, that is a third documented attempt for the same defect.

Is my 2021 or 2022 Lincoln Nautilus affected by the engine recall, and what if parts are not available?

Yes. NHTSA Recall 24V635000 covers 2021-2022 Lincoln Nautilus models for engine intake valves that may fracture and cause complete engine failure while driving. The remedy is replacement of the affected valves, but NHTSA owner complaints document significant parts shortages following the recall announcement — with some owners waiting months while their vehicles sat immobilized at the dealer. If your 2021-2022 Nautilus is at the dealer awaiting recall parts, document every calendar day it is not in your possession: California's Song-Beverly Act creates a separate lemon presumption when a vehicle is out of service for 30 or more cumulative days during warranty, regardless of how many repair attempts have been made. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov and ask the dealer for written documentation of the parts ETA on every service visit.

Why did my Lincoln Nautilus slam on the brakes at highway speed with nothing in front of me?

What you experienced is likely a phantom automatic emergency braking (AEB) event from the Co-Pilot360 system. Multiple NHTSA complaint reports document the Nautilus decelerating from highway speeds — some describing a drop from 70 mph to 40 mph in 2-3 seconds — with no obstacle detected. The forward-facing radar and camera can misinterpret stationary objects, shadows, and overhead signs as collision threats and trigger full AEB application. In one documented case, the AEB event cascaded into failure of BLIS, the backup camera, hill assist, and auto hold simultaneously. This is a safety defect, not 'normal behavior' as some dealers have told owners. If you experienced a phantom-braking event, file an NHTSA complaint at nhtsa.gov to create a formal record. If the dealer has dismissed your concern or applied a software update that did not prevent recurrence, each visit is a repair attempt under California's Song-Beverly lemon law.

The Lincoln Nautilus backup camera shows a frozen or black image when I back up — is there a recall?

Yes — in fact, there are three separate recall campaigns affecting the Nautilus rearview camera across the 2019-2023 model years. Recall 20V575000 (2020 MY) addressed a poor electrical connection causing blank or distorted images. Recall 25V442000 (2019-2020 MY) addressed a software error causing blank images or images that remain on screen after exiting Reverse. Recall 25V315000 (2021-2023 MY) addressed a software defect causing the camera to freeze on a static prior image while the vehicle is in Reverse — the most dangerous variant, because the driver believes they are seeing live video when they are not. Verify at nhtsa.gov/recalls which campaigns apply to your VIN and whether all have been completed. If the camera malfunctioned after a remedy was applied, that second visit is a documented repair attempt for a federally required safety feature under California's Song-Beverly Act.

How many repair attempts do I need for a Lincoln Nautilus lemon law claim in California?

Under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, the threshold depends on the type of defect. For a defect that could cause death or serious injury — like sudden loss of engine power (recall 24V635000), phantom emergency braking, steering loss, or airbag malfunction — the law presumes lemon status after just two unsuccessful repair attempts. For other substantial defects, the presumption applies after four attempts or 30 cumulative out-of-service days. For 2019 Nautilus owners, the dual recall campaigns for both the instrument cluster (19V076000 and 26V372000) and the steering system (19V031000 and 26V377000) may independently satisfy the two-attempt standard — because Ford itself made two official attempts to fix the same defect. For transmission owners, two or more dealer visits for the same shift defect may be sufficient. The key is documentation: every repair order, date, mileage, and written symptom description. If you have three or more visits for any single Nautilus issue, you likely have enough to warrant a free case review.
