The overview

What owners are dealing with

The Land Rover Discovery Sport (L550) has been sold in the United States since the 2015 model year, positioning itself as a premium compact SUV. Over more than a decade on the market the L550 has accumulated an unusually broad recall record — ten NHTSA campaigns spanning transmission faults, fire risks, suspension failures, seat belt defects, and camera-system non-compliance. Owners who purchased or leased a Discovery Sport in California and experienced repeat repairs under warranty may have rights under the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act — California's lemon law.

ZF 9HP Transmission Unexpectedly Shifts to Neutral While DrivingSafety2015
Symptoms

Vehicle suddenly loses drive power and coasts; transmission drops into neutral without driver input; warning light may illuminate; condition recurs.

Why it matters for your claim

Sudden loss of drive power at highway speed is a safety defect that creates a clear substantial impairment argument. If the TCM update fails to resolve repeat occurrences, this is a strong lemon candidate.

Typical fix

TCM software update (per recall remedy); transmission replacement for serial numbers below threshold per TSB SSM71847.

Ingenium I4 VCT Actuator Stopper Detaches — Engine Stall and Potential Engine DamageDrivability/Reliability2015-2018
Symptoms

Check engine light comes on; engine stutters, loses power, or stalls; rattling noise from engine; vehicle may need emergency roadside stop; repeat stalls after software update.

Why it matters for your claim

Engine stall at speed is a safety/reliability defect. If repair fails to prevent recurrence, or if the vehicle is in for the same complaint 2+ times, this supports a lemon claim. JLR acknowledged the defect via two separate TSBs.

Typical fix

Replace intake camshaft VCT actuator (per TSB LTB00916NAS5); replace VCT actuator for timing chain rattle per TSB LTB01145NAS3.

Ingenium 2.0L Fuel Rail End Cap Leaks — Underhood Fire RiskCatastrophic2018
Symptoms

Fuel smell in engine bay; visible fuel wet spots near fuel rail; check engine light; in severe cases smoke or fire from engine compartment.

Why it matters for your claim

Fire risk from a day-one manufacturing defect is a clear safety substantial impairment. Any failure of the recall repair to prevent fuel odor recurrence is a strong basis for lemon claim on 2018 MY vehicles.

Typical fix

Replace complete fuel rail assembly (per recall remedy).

2020 MHEV 48V System DC-DC Converter Short-Circuit / Vehicle Fire RiskCatastrophic2020
Symptoms

Electrical fault warning light illuminates; burning smell or smoke from engine area; in extreme cases sustained engine fire; vehicle may not restart after parking.

Why it matters for your claim

Fire risk is the most severe safety defect category. JLR's own safety advisory told owners not to remain in parked vehicles. Multiple repair visits for electrical faults on MHEV 2020 models, especially if fire-adjacent, support lemon claims.

Typical fix

TCM/DCDC software update via authorized dealer (per recall remedy).

2020 MHEV DC-DC Converter Microchip Failure — Sudden Loss of Drive Power and Exterior LightingSafety2020
Symptoms

Red 'Electrical Fault Detected' warning; additional warning messages if ignored; vehicle loses all motive power and coasts to stop; exterior lights extinguish; vehicle cannot be restarted.

Why it matters for your claim

Open recall with no remedy yet available — vehicles remain unsafe as of filing date. Any 2020 MHEV Discovery Sport presenting with DC-DC failure while remedy is unavailable is in a strong lemon posture. Remedy unavailability itself may extend the lemon-law repair opportunity period.

Typical fix

Remedy under development as of June 2026; interim owner notification letters in progress.

Front Lower Control Arm Fastener Failure — Steering Knuckle Separation RiskSafety2016-2017
Symptoms

Unusual handling behavior; clunking or abnormal steering feel; in worst case sudden steering loss from knuckle separating from control arm.

Why it matters for your claim

Steering knuckle separation is a catastrophic safety defect. Small population (220 units) but extremely high severity. Any vehicle presenting with this defect has clear substantial impairment.

Typical fix

Replace fasteners and apply correct torque at authorized dealer (per recall remedy).

Seat Belt Retractor / Pretensioner Failure — Improper Occupant RestraintSafety2020-2023
Symptoms

Seat belt feels loose or does not lock properly when securing a child seat; pretensioner does not activate in crash; seat belt warning may not illuminate correctly.

Why it matters for your claim

Seat belt failure is a core safety defect. If either recall remedy does not resolve the condition and the vehicle returns for the same complaint, this is a lemon candidate. Combined, these recalls covered four model years (2020–2023).

Typical fix

Inspect and replace front seat belt assemblies per respective recall campaigns. Free of charge.

Touchscreen Blank at Startup / Rearview Camera Fails to Display (2023 MY Software Defect)Safety2023
Symptoms

Center touchscreen goes black or fails to load at engine start; rear camera image does not appear when reversing; feature unavailability for navigation, HVAC controls, and camera persists until vehicle restart.

Why it matters for your claim

Recurring camera/touchscreen failures that persist post-software-update support lemon claims on 2023 MY vehicles. Camera non-compliance also elevates this beyond pure annoyance to a safety-relevant defect.

Typical fix

Software update to IDMA via dealer or OTA update (per recall remedy).

DC-DC Converter Overload / Start-Up Software Fault — Loss of Drive Power and Exterior Lighting (MHEV, Recall 26V599)Safety2020-2024
Symptoms

12-volt charging warning; 'Stop Safely Electrical Fault Detected' or similar dashboard message; sudden loss of drive power while driving; exterior lights go out; vehicle fails to keep 12-volt system charged at start-up

Why it matters for your claim

Open recall with no final remedy: a mild-hybrid vehicle that can lose all drive power and exterior lighting without warning presents a strong substantial-impairment argument under Song-Beverly. Because this is the second DC-DC converter campaign on this vehicle line in five months (26V248 in April 2026, 26V599 in September 2026), a California owner with prior converter or 12-volt charging complaints, repeat dealer visits, or extended out-of-service time while awaiting a remedy has a well-documented repair-attempt record; each visit for the same power-loss condition counts toward the reasonable-number-of-attempts threshold.

Typical fix

Software update (load balancing, start-up stability fix, protective limp-home mode); final remedy not yet available as of Sep 30, 2026, interim letters expected November 13, 2026

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Civil Code §§ 1790–1795.8) requires manufacturers to repair a vehicle's covered defects within a reasonable number of attempts. If they cannot, you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle or a refund of your purchase price (minus a mileage offset), plus reimbursement of incidental costs.

The statute includes a rebuttable presumption — sometimes called the 'lemon law presumption' (Civil Code § 1793.22) — that a reasonable number of repair attempts has been exceeded if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles from delivery:

  • The same problem has been in for repair four or more times; or
  • The vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days.

For a defect that could cause death or serious injury, the threshold drops to two attempts.

Song-Beverly applies to any vehicle purchased or leased for personal or family use in California, whether new or certified pre-owned with a dealer warranty. If your Discovery Sport qualifies, the manufacturer must also pay your attorney fees — so pursuing a claim typically costs you nothing out of pocket.

This is general information only and is not legal advice. Whether your specific situation qualifies is a factual and legal question. We offer free, no-obligation case reviews.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Land Rover Discovery Sport specifically

Dealers sometimes say they 'cannot duplicate' an intermittent electrical or software fault. Here is what to do if that happens:

1. Document every occurrence. Write down the date, time, odometer reading, outside temperature, and exactly what happened — in plain language, not dealer-speak. A phone screenshot of the dashboard warning counts.

2. Ask for a written repair order even when nothing is found. The law requires the dealer to write up every visit. A 'no fault found' repair order is still a repair attempt.

3. Request that the dealer scan the vehicle's fault-code memory (including stored and pending DTCs) and provide you a printout. Codes can be stored even after a self-clearing event.

4. For electrical or software faults (the DC-DC converter warning, the blank touchscreen, the camera failure), ask whether the vehicle has a pending OTA update or whether any NHTSA recall applies — and ask for this in writing on the repair order.

5. Keep track of days out of service. In California, 30 or more cumulative days in the shop for warranty repairs is one of the statutory thresholds that creates a presumption of a lemon, even if no single repair was more than a day or two.

6. If the dealer continues to close out repair orders with 'no fault found' and the problem keeps recurring, contact an attorney who handles lemon-law cases for a free case review. You do not need to prove the dealer was wrong — you need to show the defect persists.

Our take

The Discovery Sport's ten-recall record across a single generation is atypical even for a premium brand. Three of those campaigns involved confirmed fire risk or sudden loss of drive power — the most serious categories under federal safety law. One of the two DC-DC converter recalls on 2020 MHEV models (NHTSA 26V248) was still open as of June 2026, meaning some owners have been notified of a safety defect with no fix yet available. Seat belt defects spanned four consecutive model years. If your Discovery Sport has been in the shop repeatedly and the dealer keeps sending it back with the same complaint unresolved, the pattern you are describing is consistent with a lemon-law claim.

FAQ

Land Rover Discovery Sport lemon-law questions

Is the Land Rover Discovery Sport a lemon?

Whether any individual Discovery Sport qualifies as a lemon under California law depends on your specific repair history — not on the recall record alone. That said, the L550 generation has a documented pattern of serious defects confirmed by NHTSA: a transmission that drops to neutral without warning (16V614), two fire-risk recalls on 2018 and 2020 model years, a suspension fastener separation defect (16V889), four consecutive model years of seat belt recalls, and an open recall on 2020 MHEV models with no remedy yet available (26V248). If your Discovery Sport has been repaired two or more times for the same problem, or has spent 30 or more days in the shop, you may qualify for a refund or replacement under Song-Beverly.

What recalls affect the Land Rover Discovery Sport?

The Discovery Sport L550 (2015–2026) has been subject to ten NHTSA safety recall campaigns. Key campaigns include: 16V614 (2015 MY — 9-speed transmission shifts to neutral unexpectedly, 10,455 units); 16V889 (2016–2017 MY — front lower control arm fasteners may separate, 220 units); 18V087 (2018 MY — fuel rail end cap fuel leak / fire risk, 8,211 units); 20V683 (2020 MHEV — DC-DC converter short-circuit / fire risk, 3,048 units); 21V668 (2020–2021 MY — seat belt retractor, 32,687 units); 22V523 (2022–2023 MY — seat belt pretensioner damage); 25V016 (2023 MY — touchscreen blank / rear camera failure); 24V678 (2024 MY — NFSM overheating / camera failure); 25V705 (2025 MY — gear shift module, open); and 26V248 (2020 MHEV — DC-DC converter microchip failure / sudden loss of drive power, 381 units, open with no remedy as of June 2026). You can verify your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.

My Discovery Sport transmission suddenly shifted to neutral while driving — what should I do?

If your 2015 Discovery Sport's transmission suddenly dropped into neutral without you touching the selector, the confirmed cause is insufficient crimp connections in the transmission sensor cluster wire harness. NHTSA recall 16V614 (campaign P091) required JLR dealers to inspect the transmission serial number and perform a TCM software update. If your vehicle was remedied under 16V614 and the problem has returned, that recurrence is a separate repair attempt and counts toward your lemon-law eligibility. Document every episode — date, speed, road conditions — and keep all repair orders. Two or more repair attempts for the same safety defect within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery triggers the lemon-law presumption under California Civil Code § 1793.22.

My 2020 Discovery Sport MHEV has an electrical fault warning and stalled — is there a recall?

Yes, and there are actually two separate recalls that can affect 2020 Discovery Sport MHEV models. The first, NHTSA 20V683, covered a MOSFET failure in the 48V DC-DC converter that could cause a 12V short-to-ground and sustained vehicle fire. That recall is closed and the remedy was a software update. The second, NHTSA 26V248 (filed April 2026), covers a different defect in the same converter's boost control microchip, which can cause complete, sudden loss of drive power and exterior lighting while driving. As of June 2026, that second recall is open with no remedy yet available — affected owners have received interim notification letters. If your 2020 MHEV Discovery Sport has experienced either of these conditions, check your VIN at nhtsa.gov and contact your dealer immediately. The absence of an available remedy may itself strengthen a lemon-law claim for vehicles that cannot be repaired.

My Discovery Sport's backup camera doesn't work — is that a recall issue?

It depends on your model year. For 2023 MY vehicles: a software timing defect in the Interactive Display Module A (IDMA) can cause the touchscreen to go completely blank at startup, preventing the rearview camera from displaying when you reverse. This was the subject of NHTSA recall 25V016 (campaign N972), remedied by a software update that can be applied at the dealer or, for some vehicles, via OTA. If your camera issue persists after the update, that is a continuing defect. For 2024 MY vehicles: recall 24V678 covers a Near Field Sensing Module (NFSM) that overheats due to missing thermal interface material, causing the 3D surround and rearview camera images to stop displaying. That remedy is an NFSM replacement. If your camera problems started after a software update and you are still experiencing blackouts, document each occurrence with date and odometer reading.

How many repair attempts does California require before I can get a buyback on my Discovery Sport?

California's Song-Beverly Act does not set a fixed number — it requires a 'reasonable number of attempts.' However, Civil Code § 1793.22 creates a rebuttable presumption that the threshold has been met if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery: the same defect has been repaired four or more times; the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days; or — for a defect likely to cause death or serious injury — the defect has been repaired two or more times. Fire risk (fuel rail leak, DC-DC converter fire), sudden loss of drive power, and steering knuckle separation are all defects that could cause death or serious injury, so two repair attempts on any of those issues may trigger the presumption. You do not need to reach these numbers to file a claim — they create a presumption, not a requirement. A free case review with a lemon-law attorney is the best way to assess your specific repair history.
