The overview

What owners are dealing with

The Kia Seltos arrived in the United States in 2021 as a value-focused subcompact SUV — roomy, well-equipped, and priced for families watching their budget. Within its first model years, it became one of the most popular Kias on the road. It also became, for thousands of owners, one of the most worrying: a vehicle whose engine can seize without warning, leak oil onto the exhaust, and catch fire. The headline defect involves the Nu 2.0L MPI engine's piston oil rings — a supplier manufacturing failure that affected two model-year populations separately. NHTSA recall 21V-259 (Kia SC209, April 2021) covered approximately 21,849 Seltos units from the 2021 model year, built from November 2019 through October 2020. Then a second, distinct manufacturing deviation at the same supplier — not heat treatment this time, but a dimensional defect in the ring itself — triggered NHTSA recall 25V-099 (Kia SC336, February 2025), covering approximately 53,635 additional Seltos units from 2021-2023 model years. Combined, more than 75,000 Seltos vehicles have been subject to engine seizure and fire-risk recalls. Four engine fires were confirmed before SC336 was even issued. The recall story has a second chapter. In the two months after SC336 launched, NHTSA received 47 owner complaints alleging the remedy was ineffective or unavailable — some owners described the inspection as inconsistent, others said engine replacement parts simply were not in stock. NHTSA opened Audit Query AQ25001. Kia changed its inspection procedure in May 2025, but the audit record documents the failures. And there is more. A separate 2023-2024 Seltos recall (23V-531, Kia SC275) placed a park-outside advisory on Seltos units whose Idle Stop and Go electric oil pump controller contained a damaged capacitor — another electrical fire risk, completely independent of the piston ring problem. California owners of 2021-2023 Seltos vehicles may be sitting on two overlapping safety recalls for fire risk and an unresolved NHTSA audit about whether the fix actually works.

Piston Oil Ring Defect — Engine Seizure, Oil Loss, and Fire Risk (Nu 2.0L MPI)Catastrophic2021-2023
Symptoms

Engine consumes excessive oil between changes; abnormal knocking or ticking noise from engine; oil pressure warning light illuminates; sudden engine stall or total loss of power while driving; in severe cases engine seizes completely or catches fire

Why it matters for your claim

Two separate statutory recalls for the same fundamental engine defect (21V259 and 25V099) covering 2021-2023 MYs. NHTSA Audit Query AQ25001 documents 47 owners who could not obtain effective remedy after 25V099 — strong evidence of substantial impairment and failure to repair within a reasonable number of attempts. 335 NHTSA complaints for 2021 MY alone, including engine fires, stalls at highway speed, and repeat repair failures. Owners outside recall VIN ranges reporting identical symptoms are strong lemon-law candidates.

Typical fix

PNSS (Piston Ring Noise Sensing System) ECM software update to monitor for DTC P1327; engine inspection; engine replacement if damage confirmed. Remedy under 25V099 has documented inconsistency issues (NHTSA AQ25001 — 47 post-remedy complaints).

Idle Stop & Go (ISG) Electric Oil Pump Controller Overheating — Vehicle Fire RiskCatastrophic2023-2024
Symptoms

Burning smell from engine bay; warning lights related to transmission or start-stop system; vehicle fire originating from pump area under hood; park-outside advisory issued by Kia

Why it matters for your claim

Park-outside fire-risk recall creates safety-based substantial impairment claim. Vehicle is arguably unsafe to park in a garage from date of sale for affected 2023-2024 units. If dealer cannot promptly remedy, owner has strong lemon-law basis.

Typical fix

Inspect and replace the ISG electric oil pump controller at no charge. Until repair completed, owners advised to park outside and away from structures.

Side Curtain Airbag Inadvertent Deployment — Occupant Injury RiskSafety2024
Symptoms

Side curtain airbag deploys without any crash or impact; loud unexpected bang from roof area; airbag obstructs driver's field of view

Why it matters for your claim

Airbag deployment without crash is a clear safety defect. Small population (1,367 units) but definitive manufacturing defect. If remedy requires extended backordered parts or repeat visits, substantial impairment is established.

Typical fix

Dealer inspects both side curtain airbag modules and replaces the affected module(s) at no charge.

Anti-Theft Vulnerability — Engine Start Without Key (No Immobilizer)Functional2021-2022
Symptoms

Vehicle stolen using USB cable and screwdriver technique popularized on social media (no key or fob required); ignition column damaged; vehicle may be recovered damaged or not at all

Why it matters for your claim

NHTSA declined to mandate a safety recall, treating this as a service campaign. However, a vehicle that can be stolen by anyone with a USB cable constitutes a defect that substantially impairs use and value. If vehicle was stolen and returned damaged, or owner suffered theft-related losses, lemon-law and warranty claims are worth evaluating. Software fix does not fully restore parity with immobilizer-equipped vehicles.

Typical fix

Free dealer software update to IBU/BCM (IBU = Integrated Body Unit) that adds anti-theft ignition start logic activated when vehicle is locked via key fob, and extends horn alarm duration from 30 to 60 seconds. Software update is free but does not add a physical immobilizer.

NHTSA recall history

Safety recalls, newest first

  1. Feb 17, 2025 · 25V099

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING: ENGINE: HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL (Piston Oil Rings)

    open

Due to a quality deviation at the piston oil ring supplier, the piston oil rings may have been manufactured with dimensional non-conformance (distinct from the heat-treatment issue in 21V259). Over time the defective rings damage the cylinder wall surface, leading to increased oil consumption and, ultimately, abnormal engine noise, oil pressure warning light illumination, and potential engine seizure.

  2. Dec 22, 2023 · 23V830

AIR BAGS: SIDE/WINDOW (Side Curtain Airbag / Hybrid Inflator)

    closed

A welding error in the stored-gas section of the side curtain airbag hybrid inflator can cause the airbag to inflate without a deployment command, resulting in uninstructed deployment.

  3. Jul 31, 2023 · 23V531

POWER TRAIN: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION: FLUID/LUBRICANT: PUMP (ISG Electric Oil Pump Controller)

    closed

A Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor (MLCC) on the ISG electric oil pump controller printed circuit board may have been damaged during manufacturing, causing an electrical short circuit and thermal damage to the pump assembly, wiring harness, and electrical connector.

  4. Apr 13, 2021 · 21V259

ENGINE: HARD PARTS INTERNAL/MECHANICAL (Piston Oil Rings)

    closed

Piston oil rings produced at the supplier may not have been properly heat-treated, resulting in excessive ring hardness. This causes chipping of the oil ring outer periphery and scuffing of the engine cylinder bore, leading to engine damage.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act applies to new vehicles purchased or leased in California. It presumes a defect is substantial when a manufacturer has made two or more unsuccessful attempts to repair a safety-related defect, or four or more attempts on any other substantial defect, or when the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days during the warranty period. If your Seltos qualifies, you may be entitled to a full repurchase — the original purchase price minus a mileage offset — or a comparable replacement. Kia is required to pay your reasonable attorney's fees if you prevail, which means most California lemon law cases cost the owner nothing out of pocket. The Seltos engine defect is particularly well-documented: four confirmed fires preceded the SC336 recall, and NHTSA's Audit Query created a formal record of failed and unavailable remedies. Owners who received the recall remedy and still experience engine problems — or who waited weeks for unavailable parts — have facts worth evaluating with a California lemon law attorney. The above is general information only and is not legal advice; results depend on the specific facts of your case.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Kia Seltos specifically

A 'could not duplicate' (CND) or 'no fault found' (NFF) notation on your repair order does not eliminate your lemon law rights — the visit still counts as a repair attempt under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act. Here is how to protect yourself when the dealer cannot reproduce what you are experiencing: 1. Before every visit, document the symptom precisely: date, mileage, oil level you observed, any warning message shown on the cluster, and any sounds or smells. Photographs or short videos captured safely are valuable. 2. For oil consumption: ask the service advisor to record your current oil level on the repair order at check-in and at check-out. Bring your own records of oil top-offs between visits. A documented consumption rate of one quart or more per 1,000 miles is meaningful evidence. 3. Ask for a printout of all stored and historical Diagnostic Trouble Codes — including freeze-frame data. Under the SC336 recall protocol, DTC P1327 (PNSS piston-ring threshold exceeded) and knock-sensor codes are key. If the PNSS software has not yet been installed, ask for confirmation that it was applied under 21V-259 or 25V-099. 4. Reference the recalls by number: 21V-259 (SC209) and 25V-099 (SC336). If the dealer says your VIN is not covered, ask them to note that on the repair order and to contact Kia Technical Assistance for a goodwill review. 5. If engine replacement parts are on backorder, ask for the estimated wait in writing. Every day your vehicle is out of service — including waiting for back-ordered components — counts toward the 30-day lemon law presumption. 6. Kia changed its SC336 inspection procedure in May 2025 following the NHTSA Audit Query. If you were inspected and cleared before that date, you may have grounds for a re-inspection using the revised protocol.

Our take

The 2021-2023 Kia Seltos carries a defect record that stands out even in a crowded field of recall stories. Two separate manufacturing errors — both at the piston ring supplier, both causing the same class of engine damage — produced back-to-back recalls covering most of the model's first three years on sale. Four fires were confirmed before the second recall was issued. Then NHTSA opened a formal audit because the fix wasn't working reliably. At the same time, a completely separate ISG pump controller defect put another park-outside fire advisory on 2023-2024 units. For an owner who bought a Seltos to get reliable, affordable transportation, this is not what the warranty is supposed to mean. If your Seltos has experienced excessive oil consumption, engine noise, or a fire-related recall and the dealer has not been able to resolve it, California law gives you meaningful options. A free lemon law consultation costs you nothing.

FAQ

Kia Seltos lemon-law questions

Is my Kia Seltos covered by the engine recall?

If you own a 2021-2023 Kia Seltos with the 2.0L Nu MPI engine, your vehicle is very likely covered by at least one NHTSA engine recall. Two separate campaigns apply: NHTSA 21V-259 (Kia SC209, April 2021) covers approximately 21,849 Seltos units from the 2021 model year, built between November 2019 and October 2020. NHTSA 25V-099 (Kia SC336, February 2025) covers approximately 53,635 Seltos units from 2021-2023 model years, built between July 2020 and July 2022. Both recalls involve defective piston oil rings that can progressively damage cylinder walls, cause excessive oil consumption, and allow oil to contact hot exhaust components — a vehicle fire risk. Four fires were confirmed before the second recall was issued. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov to confirm which campaigns are currently open for your vehicle.

My Kia Seltos engine was inspected under the recall but still uses too much oil. What should I do?

Document everything and return to the dealer. NHTSA opened Audit Query AQ25001 specifically because 47 owners reported in a two-month window that the SC336 recall remedy (25V-099) was either ineffective or unavailable. The audit formally documented inconsistent inspection outcomes — some vehicles cleared as acceptable while continuing to consume oil abnormally. Kia revised its inspection procedure on May 7, 2025 in response. If you were inspected and cleared before that date, or if your vehicle was cleared and then re-developed engine noise or oil consumption, ask the dealer to perform a re-inspection under the revised procedure and document the current oil level at check-in and check-out on the repair order. Each visit, including one that finds nothing, counts as a repair attempt under California's Song-Beverly lemon law. If your engine was not repaired and you are on a second or third attempt, a free legal consultation is worth pursuing.

Is there a fire risk recall on the Kia Seltos beyond the engine issue?

Yes — and it is a completely separate problem. NHTSA recall 23V-531 (Kia SC275, July 2023) covers 2023 and 2024 Seltos units equipped with the Idle Stop and Go automatic transmission system. The defect: a Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor on the ISG electric oil pump controller printed circuit board was damaged during manufacturing, causing an electrical short circuit. The short can produce thermal runaway in the pump assembly, overheating the circuit board, connector, and wiring harness — a vehicle fire risk entirely independent of the piston ring engine recall. Kia issued a park-outside, away-from-structures advisory to affected owners until the controller is inspected and replaced at no charge. If you have not had this repair completed and your Seltos is a 2023 or 2024 model with ISG, schedule the service and document any delay in repair on your repair order.

My Kia Seltos engine seized or stalled at highway speed. Is that the recall?

It is consistent with the documented piston ring defect covered by recalls 21V-259 and 25V-099. Owners report in NHTSA complaint records that Seltos engines stalled suddenly at highway speed with no prior warning, in some cases requiring roadside towing. In the most severe cases, engines seized completely and caught fire. The underlying mechanism is progressive cylinder wall damage from defective rings that eventually causes the engine to lose oil pressure, knock, and fail. If your Seltos stalled at speed, have the dealer document the incident, the mileage, and any stored DTCs — including P1327 — on the repair order, and reference recalls 21V-259 and 25V-099. A highway stall is a safety event. In California, two or more unsuccessful repair attempts for a safety-related defect can trigger the lemon law presumption.

Can I get a buyback for my Kia Seltos under California lemon law?

You may qualify. California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act creates a presumption of a lemon when a manufacturer cannot repair a substantial defect after two or more attempts for a safety-related issue, four or more attempts for any other substantial defect, or when the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days in the warranty period. The Seltos engine situation is well-documented: four fires were confirmed before the SC336 recall issued, NHTSA opened a formal audit because the fix was inconsistently applied, and engine replacement parts were on extended backorder for many owners. If your Seltos was repaired under the recall and the problem recurred, or if it spent weeks at the dealer waiting for replacement engine components, those facts are worth evaluating. If you prevail under Song-Beverly, Kia is required to pay your reasonable attorney's fees, so most California lemon law cases cost the owner nothing out of pocket. This is general information, not legal advice.

My 2024 Kia Seltos has an airbag recall. What does it cover?

NHTSA recall 23V-830 (Kia SC289, December 2023) covers approximately 1,367 Seltos units from the 2024 model year, built between April 3 and May 8, 2023. The defect is a welding error in the stored-gas section of the side curtain airbag hybrid inflator. This error can cause the side curtain airbag to inflate and deploy without any crash or deployment signal from the airbag control module. Inadvertent airbag deployment can injure occupants and obstruct the driver's field of view. The remedy is dealer inspection and replacement of the affected side curtain airbag module(s) at no charge. Owner notifications were mailed January 31, 2024. If you have not had this repair completed, contact your Kia dealer and reference recall SC289 or NHTSA campaign 23V-830. This recall affects a narrow production window — check your specific VIN at nhtsa.gov to confirm coverage.
