The overview

What owners are dealing with

The Jeep Wrangler JL (2018–present) is one of the most iconic off-road vehicles ever made. It's also one of the most-recalled Jeeps in recent history. Since the JL generation launched, NHTSA has opened multiple investigations and issued recall after recall — covering fire risks from the clutch, fire risks from the power steering pump, death wobble from the front suspension, and a blank instrument cluster that leaves you driving blind. If you feel like your Wrangler has spent more time at the dealer than on the trail, you're not imagining it. The problems are real, they are documented, and in many cases they are exactly the kind of defects California's lemon law was written to address.

The problems

The defects most likely to affect you

The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

01

Manual Transmission Clutch Pressure Plate Fracture — Fire and Loss of Drive

Burning smell from the transmission/clutch area; visible smoke from under the vehicle; clutch pedal behavior changes (harder or softer); abrupt loss of ability to move the vehicle under power; in worst cases, holes or cracks appear in the transmission case and hot debris is ejected.

Catastrophic2018-2023
02

Electric Hydraulic Power Steering Pump (EHPSP) Wiring Fire — Park-Outside Advisory

Vehicle fire or smell of burning wiring/plastic, potentially while parked with ignition off. In some cases owners report no warning before fire starts. Melted wiring or burn marks at the EHPSP connector.

Catastrophic2021-2025
03

4xe High-Voltage Battery Fire Risk (Repeat Recalls — 23V-787, 24V-720, 25V-741)

Vehicle fire while parked or charging; battery warning lights; battery system error messages; vehicle shuts down unexpectedly. NHTSA / FCA issued three separate park-outside advisories for these vehicles.

Catastrophic2020-2025
04

2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine Sand Contamination — Wear, Knock, Catastrophic Failure

Engine knocking or ticking; oil consumption higher than expected; check engine / oil pressure warning lights; loss of power; engine stall; in severe cases, catastrophic engine failure or fire.

Catastrophic2023-2025
05

Death Wobble — Violent Steering Shimmy / Front Suspension Resonance

At highway speeds (typically 45-70 mph) after hitting a bump, pothole, or road seam, the steering wheel and front end shake violently and uncontrollably. The shimmy can be severe enough to feel like the vehicle is coming apart. It may self-dampen or require the driver to slow significantly to stop it. Symptom is more common in cold weather.

Safety2018-2020
06

Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Short Circuit — Gauge Cluster Goes Blank

Instrument panel / speedometer cluster goes dark or blank while driving; gauges (speed, fuel, temperature, odometer) stop displaying; warning lights may illuminate or not illuminate when expected; cluster may flicker before failing.

Death Wobble — Violent Steering Shimmy / Front Suspension ResonanceSafety2018-2020
Symptoms

At highway speeds (typically 45-70 mph) after hitting a bump, pothole, or road seam, the steering wheel and front end shake violently and uncontrollably. The shimmy can be severe enough to feel like the vehicle is coming apart. It may self-dampen or require the driver to slow significantly to stop it. Symptom is more common in cold weather.

Why it matters for your claim

Strong lemon-law candidate: NHTSA fielded 450+ complaints, a class action was certified and settled, and FCA extended the warranty to 8 years/90,000 miles — effectively acknowledging a systemic defect. Multiple dealer repair attempts to replace the damper that fail to resolve the wobble support a substantial impairment argument. California LL requires substantial impairment of use, value, or safety; uncontrolled steering shimmy at highway speed easily meets the safety prong.

Typical fix

Replace front steering damper. Under class action settlement (Reynolds v. FCA US LLC, No. 2:19-cv-11745), FCA agreed to an 8-year/90,000-mile warranty extension covering steering damper replacement at no cost.

Manual Transmission Clutch Pressure Plate Fracture — Fire and Loss of DriveCatastrophic2018-2023
Symptoms

Burning smell from the transmission/clutch area; visible smoke from under the vehicle; clutch pedal behavior changes (harder or softer); abrupt loss of ability to move the vehicle under power; in worst cases, holes or cracks appear in the transmission case and hot debris is ejected.

Why it matters for your claim

Two separate recalls for the same defect spanning 2018-2023 model years signals a persistent manufacturing/design failure. Fire risk and loss of propulsion meet the 'substantial impairment of safety' standard. Owners who experienced clutch failure, had a first repair under 20V-124, and then faced repeat issues before 23V-116 remedy may have strong multi-repair lemon claims.

Typical fix

Replacement of clutch assembly; software update to add escalating warnings and engine torque reduction when clutch temps approach dangerous levels. Estimated repair time: 6 hours. FCA recalled twice: 20V-124 (initial, 2020) and 23V-116 (expanded, 2023).

Electric Hydraulic Power Steering Pump (EHPSP) Wiring Fire — Park-Outside AdvisoryCatastrophic2021-2025
Symptoms

Vehicle fire or smell of burning wiring/plastic, potentially while parked with ignition off. In some cases owners report no warning before fire starts. Melted wiring or burn marks at the EHPSP connector.

Why it matters for your claim

This is the largest and most recent of multiple fire-risk recalls on the JL platform. A vehicle that suffered fire, electrical failure, or had repeated EHPSP repairs before/after this recall meets California lemon law's safety impairment prong. Owners who purchased 2021-2025 Wranglers with fire damage or who cannot use the vehicle while awaiting remedy have strong claims.

Typical fix

Inspect and replace the EHPSP electrical connection/harness as needed, at no charge. Owner notification expected July 9, 2026; remedy available at dealers.

4xe High-Voltage Battery Fire Risk (Repeat Recalls — 23V-787, 24V-720, 25V-741)Catastrophic2020-2025
Symptoms

Vehicle fire while parked or charging; battery warning lights; battery system error messages; vehicle shuts down unexpectedly. NHTSA / FCA issued three separate park-outside advisories for these vehicles.

Why it matters for your claim

Three separate recalls for the same fundamental battery fire defect, with an acknowledged ineffective remedy under 24V-720, make this an unusually strong lemon candidate. Owners of 2020-2025 Wrangler 4xe who have returned for repeated battery-related repairs, or who cannot use their vehicle pending an unavailable remedy, have compelling claims. The ongoing park-outside advisory means the vehicle is effectively not safe for normal residential use — a direct substantial impairment of value and safety.

Typical fix

Under 24V-720: BMS software update (proved ineffective). Under 25V-741: remedy under development as of late 2025; owners advised to park outside and not charge. Interim notification letters mailed December 2025.

2.0L Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine Sand Contamination — Wear, Knock, Catastrophic FailureCatastrophic2023-2025
Symptoms

Engine knocking or ticking; oil consumption higher than expected; check engine / oil pressure warning lights; loss of power; engine stall; in severe cases, catastrophic engine failure or fire.

Why it matters for your claim

Engine replacement under recall is a major repair event. If a 2023-2025 Wrangler 4xe experienced engine problems prior to or concurrent with this recall — oil consumption, knocking, stall, or required engine work — those repair visits count toward the lemon law repair-attempt threshold. California lemon law presumes substantial impairment after 2+ attempts for a safety defect or 4+ for any defect.

Typical fix

Engine replacement assembly and new engine control unit software. Remedy expected to be performed starting ~May 2026; owner notification by that date.

Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Short Circuit — Gauge Cluster Goes BlankSafety2018-2024
Symptoms

Instrument panel / speedometer cluster goes dark or blank while driving; gauges (speed, fuel, temperature, odometer) stop displaying; warning lights may illuminate or not illuminate when expected; cluster may flicker before failing.

Why it matters for your claim

A blank instrument cluster while driving impairs the driver's ability to monitor speed and critical warnings — a safety impairment. If the cluster failed before the recall remedy was available and the owner had multiple dealer visits, that supports a lemon claim. Broader lemon relevance if combined with other defects (e.g., death wobble + cluster failure on same vehicle).

Typical fix

Replacement of the defective IPC with an upgraded unit featuring a redesigned printed circuit board. Free repair at Jeep dealer (NHTSA 24V-652 / FCA 30B). Owner notification mailed 2024.

3.0L EcoDiesel High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure — Engine StallSafety2021-2023
Symptoms

Engine stalls unexpectedly while driving or at idle; difficulty restarting after stall; loss of power; possible illumination of check engine light; metal debris contamination in fuel system.

Why it matters for your claim

Engine stall at speed is a safety-critical event. Diesel Wrangler owners who experienced stall events, were stranded, or had multiple fuel system repairs before or after the recall remedy may have valid lemon claims. Fuel system debris contamination can require repeated repairs if not fully remedied at first visit.

Typical fix

HPFP replacement; fuel system flush to remove debris. Free repair at Jeep dealer under NHTSA 23V-263 / FCA 01A. Owner notification October 2023.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act — the state lemon law — gives you the right to a replacement vehicle or a full refund if your Jeep has a defect covered by the manufacturer's warranty and the manufacturer or its dealers have been unable to repair it after a reasonable number of attempts.

Under California law, there is a rebuttable presumption that a reasonable number of attempts has occurred if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery: (a) the same problem was subject to repair 2 or more times and the defect is likely to cause death or serious injury if the vehicle is driven, OR (b) the vehicle has been out of service for a cumulative total of more than 30 days for warranty repairs.

The fire-risk recalls on the Wrangler JL (clutch fire, power steering pump fire) are exactly the type of safety defects that can trigger the 2-attempt presumption. Death wobble at highway speed may also meet the 'likely to cause death or serious injury' standard.

You may qualify for a lemon law claim even if only one recall remedy was performed — especially if the same defect recurred or a remedy was unavailable for an extended period. This is general information, not legal advice. An attorney can evaluate your specific repair history at no cost.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Jeep Wrangler specifically

Dealers regularly write 'unable to duplicate' or 'no fault found' on repair orders, especially for death wobble — because the shimmy often only appears under specific road and temperature conditions. Here is what to do when that happens:

1. Record everything. Use your phone to video the wobble or smoke while it's happening. Date and time-stamp the recording.

2. Keep every repair order. Even a 'no-fault-found' visit counts as a repair attempt under California lemon law. Do not discard any paperwork.

3. Describe the problem precisely in writing. When you drop the car off, write the symptom in exact detail on the service order: 'Steering wheel shakes violently at approximately 55 mph for 3–5 seconds after hitting a bump. Occurred on [date] on [road name].' Vague descriptions make it easier for the dealer to close without repair.

4. Request that the dealer document the road test. Ask the service writer to note that a road test was performed and the specific conditions (speed, road type, temperature).

5. Escalate to FCA customer care. Call Stellantis/FCA customer service and open a case number. This creates a corporate record independent of the dealership.

6. If the dealer says it's 'normal' for a solid-axle Jeep, that is incorrect. FCA settled a class action and extended the warranty specifically because the wobble is not normal — it is caused by a defective steering damper.

Our take

The Jeep Wrangler JL is not a bad vehicle concept — it's a vehicle that has been let down by manufacturing and engineering failures that should never have made it to consumers. A clutch that can start a fire. A power steering pump that can burn down a parked car. A steering damper that causes violent highway shaking — and that FCA quietly fixed through a class action settlement rather than a formal recall. Any one of these would be alarming on its own. Together, across the same vehicle generation, they paint a picture of systemic quality control problems at the factory level.

If your Wrangler has been at the dealer multiple times for any of these issues and the problems keep coming back — or if a remedy simply was not available while your car sat unusable — California law may entitle you to a replacement or your money back. You should not have to accept a dangerous vehicle.

FAQ

Jeep Wrangler lemon-law questions

What is Jeep Wrangler death wobble and is it covered under warranty?

Death wobble is a violent, uncontrolled shaking of the steering wheel and front end that strikes at highway speeds — usually 45 to 70 mph — after the front tires hit a bump, pothole, or road irregularity. The shaking can be severe enough to feel like the vehicle is falling apart, and it may not stop until you slow down significantly. It is caused by air trapped inside the factory-installed steering damper, which stops the damper from suppressing the resonance in the solid front axle.

For 2018–2020 Wranglers and 2020 Gladiators, a class action settlement (Reynolds v. FCA US LLC) resulted in an extended warranty of 8 years or 90,000 miles for steering damper replacement, free of charge. FCA also issued TSB 23-079-23 / Warranty Extension XF1 documenting the fix. If your Wrangler is within that window and you have not had the steering damper replaced, contact a Jeep dealer. If you have had it replaced multiple times without resolution, you may have a lemon law claim.

Is there a Jeep Wrangler clutch fire recall and does my vehicle qualify?

Yes. NHTSA issued two separate recalls for a clutch pressure plate fire defect on manual-transmission Wranglers. The initial recall (NHTSA 20V-124 / FCA W12) covered 2018–2020 Wranglers with approximately 33,237 units. Because fires continued after that fix, NHTSA issued an expanded recall in 2023 (NHTSA 23V-116 / FCA 19A) covering 2018–2023 Wranglers — approximately 69,201 units total.

The defect: the clutch pressure plate can overheat and fracture, punching through the transmission case and spraying hot debris that can ignite a fire. The remedy is replacement of the clutch assembly plus a PCM software update. Both recalls are free of charge. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call your Jeep dealer. If you experienced a clutch failure, burning smell, or loss of drive before or after a recall repair, document those dealer visits — you may have a lemon law claim.

What is the Jeep Wrangler power steering fire recall and should I park my Jeep outside?

In June 2026, NHTSA issued recall 26V-363 covering approximately 787,887 Jeep Wranglers (model years 2021–2025) — and 1,076,999 vehicles total when Gladiators are included. The defect is in the electric hydraulic power steering pump (EHPSP): a loose terminal connection at the pump's wiring connector can generate resistance heat, melt the connector, and ignite a fire. The fire can occur even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition off.

NHTSA and FCA have issued an advisory to park affected vehicles outside and away from structures until the remedy — inspection and replacement of the EHPSP wiring connection — is completed. Owner notification is expected by July 2026. If your 2021–2025 Wrangler has experienced any electrical burning smell, melted wiring, or an actual fire near the steering pump, contact a Jeep dealer immediately and document all repair visits.

Can my Jeep Wrangler qualify as a lemon in California if the death wobble keeps coming back?

It can. California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act creates a presumption that a vehicle is a lemon if the same safety defect has been subject to repair 2 or more times and the defect is one that is likely to cause death or serious injury if the vehicle is driven. Death wobble — violent loss of steering control at highway speed — can meet that standard.

Even if the dealer replaced the steering damper, if the wobble returned and required additional visits, each visit counts as a repair attempt. 'Unable to duplicate' findings still count. You do not need the vehicle to have caught fire or been in an accident to qualify — the documented pattern of failure, unresolved repair, and ongoing safety risk is what matters. An attorney can review your repair orders at no charge to assess your claim.

My dealer says the Jeep Wrangler wobble is 'normal' for a solid-axle vehicle. Is that true?

No. Dealers have told owners this — but FCA's own actions contradict it. FCA settled a class action lawsuit in 2023 specifically because the death wobble is caused by a defective steering damper, not by the solid-axle design itself. The settlement extended the warranty to 8 years or 90,000 miles for steering damper replacement and authorized reimbursement for owners who paid out of pocket.

If your dealer tells you the shimmy is 'normal' and refuses to perform a warranty repair, ask for that statement in writing on the repair order. That documentation is valuable in a lemon law case, because it shows the manufacturer's representative was on notice of a known defect and declined to repair it. Contact a lemon law attorney to discuss next steps.

What Jeep Wrangler JL recalls are currently open and what should I do?

As of June 2026, the following recalls affecting Jeep Wrangler JL vehicles remain open:

  • NHTSA 26V-363 (2021–2025 Wrangler): Power steering pump fire risk — park outside until repaired. Remedy expected at dealers by mid-2026.
  • NHTSA 25V-741 (2020–2025 Wrangler 4xe only): High-voltage battery fire risk — do not charge, park outside. Remedy under development.
  • NHTSA 25V-766 (2023–2025 Wrangler 4xe only): Engine sand contamination — engine replacement remedy expected mid-2026.
  • NHTSA 24V-652 (2018–2024 Wrangler): Instrument panel cluster — may go blank while driving. Free IPC replacement at dealer.
  • NHTSA 23V-263 (2021–2023 EcoDiesel Wrangler): High-pressure fuel pump — engine stall risk. Free HPFP replacement.

Visit nhtsa.gov/recalls and enter your VIN to see exactly which open recalls apply to your vehicle. If an open recall remedy is unavailable and your vehicle is out of service or unsafe, that time counts toward your lemon law out-of-service day total.
