The overview

What owners are dealing with

The Jeep Grand Wagoneer sits at the top of Stellantis's SUV lineup — a $90,000-plus flagship promising luxury, capability, and a premium experience for up to seven passengers. What owners of 2022–2024 Grand Wagoneers actually encountered reads differently. The backup camera stopped working so consistently that NHTSA and Stellantis had to issue three separate recalls — targeting the same FMVSS 111 violation through three different software modules — covering a combined population of more than 160,000 WS-platform vehicles. A fourth recall found that assembly workers left a B-pillar trim panel loose in ways that could block the side curtain airbag in a crash. A fifth recall targeted a bad weld inside the steering column that could prevent the driver airbag from deploying in a frontal collision. And through all of this, the Uconnect 5 infotainment system kept freezing, rebooting, and going black. California's lemon law was designed for exactly this kind of pattern: a vehicle with a persistent safety defect that dealers cannot durably fix.

The problems

The defects most likely to affect you

The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

01

Rearview Backup Camera Fails to Display — Repeated Software Recalls (23V-577, 24V-436, 24V-944)

Backup camera image does not appear on the center screen when the vehicle is put in reverse; driver backs up blind. Issue recurred across three separate recall campaigns on 2022-2024 MY vehicles.

Safety2022-2024
02

B-Pillar Trim Not Seated — Side Curtain Airbag Deployment Blocked

No owner-visible warning in most cases; side curtain airbag may fail to fully deploy or be obstructed in a side-impact crash because the B-pillar interior trim panel is not properly clipped into place.

Safety2022-2023
03

Third-Row Seat Belt Buckles Inaccessible or Damaged — Cannot Fasten

Third-row passengers cannot latch their seatbelt; buckle is scratched, deformed, or physically blocked. In some cases, the buckle tongue will not click into the receiver at all.

Safety2022-2024
04

Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) Weld Failure — Driver Airbag May Not Deploy

No outward warning to the driver in most cases; the driver-side airbag may fail to deploy in a frontal crash. Some owners may see an airbag warning lamp. The SCCM may also intermittently cause horn or steering-wheel controls to malfunction.

Safety2023-2024
05

Door and Quarter-Window Exterior Trim Detachment at Highway Speed

Door DLO trim strips or quarter-window trim panels separate from the vehicle while driving, becoming debris on the roadway. Owners may notice loose, rattling, or missing exterior trim pieces.

Rearview Backup Camera Fails to Display — Repeated Software Recalls (23V-577, 24V-436, 24V-944)Safety2022-2024
Symptoms

Backup camera image does not appear on the center screen when the vehicle is put in reverse; driver backs up blind. Issue recurred across three separate recall campaigns on 2022-2024 MY vehicles.

Why it matters for your claim

Three separate recall campaigns for the same functional failure (no backup camera display) on overlapping model years strongly supports a persistent, unresolved safety defect. Vehicles repaired under 23V-577 that later received 24V-436 or 24V-944 notices demonstrate repeat repair for a substantially impairing condition — a textbook lemon-law pattern in California.

Typical fix

Dealer software/firmware update (CVPAM, radio, or RVCM depending on campaign); OTA update available for 24V-436

B-Pillar Trim Not Seated — Side Curtain Airbag Deployment BlockedSafety2022-2023
Symptoms

No owner-visible warning in most cases; side curtain airbag may fail to fully deploy or be obstructed in a side-impact crash because the B-pillar interior trim panel is not properly clipped into place.

Why it matters for your claim

A latent safety defect (compromised airbag deployment) present from delivery qualifies as a substantial impairment to safety under California Civ. Code §1793.2. Owners who were never notified in a timely manner, or whose vehicles were not inspected and corrected, retain strong claims.

Typical fix

Dealer inspection; reseat or replace upper B-pillar interior trim panels at no charge

Third-Row Seat Belt Buckles Inaccessible or Damaged — Cannot FastenSafety2022-2024
Symptoms

Third-row passengers cannot latch their seatbelt; buckle is scratched, deformed, or physically blocked. In some cases, the buckle tongue will not click into the receiver at all.

Why it matters for your claim

Third-row occupants riding without a functioning seatbelt is an immediate safety impairment. On a vehicle marketed as a family flagship with third-row seating, inability to safely secure rear passengers is a use-impairment that supports a lemon-law claim, especially if the owner sought repairs before the recall was announced.

Typical fix

Dealer inspects and replaces third-row seat belt buckle assemblies at no charge

Steering Column Control Module (SCCM) Weld Failure — Driver Airbag May Not DeploySafety2023-2024
Symptoms

No outward warning to the driver in most cases; the driver-side airbag may fail to deploy in a frontal crash. Some owners may see an airbag warning lamp. The SCCM may also intermittently cause horn or steering-wheel controls to malfunction.

Why it matters for your claim

Non-deployment of a driver airbag is a catastrophic safety failure. Any owner of a 2023-2024 Grand Wagoneer who experienced an airbag malfunction warning, or whose vehicle was in a crash where the driver airbag did not deploy, has a strong safety-impairment basis for a lemon-law claim.

Typical fix

Dealer inspects SCCM and replaces if weld is defective; estimated one-hour repair time

Door and Quarter-Window Exterior Trim Detachment at Highway SpeedSafety2022-2025
Symptoms

Door DLO trim strips or quarter-window trim panels separate from the vehicle while driving, becoming debris on the roadway. Owners may notice loose, rattling, or missing exterior trim pieces.

Why it matters for your claim

While trim detachment is lower severity than airbag defects, the scale of these recalls (287,000+ vehicle-recall events across two campaigns on the same WS platform) and the open/unremedied status of 25V-642 into late 2025 demonstrates a persistent build-quality failure on the flagship Grand Wagoneer. Combined with other open issues, this supports a pattern-of-defect argument.

Typical fix

25V-593: Dealer inspects and replaces door DLO trim. 25V-642: Remedy still under development as of November 2025; interim owner notification mailed

Uconnect 5 Infotainment System Freezes, Black Screens, and RebootsFunctional2022-2024
Symptoms

Main touchscreen goes black or unresponsive; system randomly reboots mid-drive; navigation, audio, and climate controls become unavailable; passenger display may also go blank. Multiple software TSBs issued.

Why it matters for your claim

Persistent infotainment failure substantially impairs use and value of a vehicle marketed in part on its premium 12-inch + passenger display technology. Multiple return visits for the same black-screen or reboot symptom after software updates supports a lemon-law pattern, particularly if the system controls HVAC or safety features (forward-collision alerts).

Typical fix

Dealer software update to latest Uconnect 5 firmware version; OTA updates available for some versions

Quadra-Lift Air Suspension Failure / Service Warning — Wiring and Sensor FaultsDrivability/Reliability2022-2025
Symptoms

"Service Air Suspension" or "Service Active Dampening System" warning light illuminates; vehicle sags heavily on one corner or drops suddenly; air suspension inoperable; vehicle defaults to lowest ride height.

Why it matters for your claim

Air suspension failure on a vehicle sold at $90,000+ price point, with active suspension as a standard feature, substantially impairs both use and value. Multiple dealer visits for the same warning message without a durable fix supports a lemon-law claim.

Typical fix

Inspect and reroute height sensor wiring harness; replace corroded connectors; reflash suspension control module; in cases of physical strut failure, replace air struts

Transfer Case Active Shift Motor Failure / MIL IlluminationDrivability/Reliability2022-2024
Symptoms

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminates; DTC C1444-98 (T-Case Motor Overuse / Over-Temperature) stored; 4WD may not shift properly; 4WD Active warning in cluster; rear axle bind during slow-speed turning.

Why it matters for your claim

Loss of 4WD functionality on an off-road-capable flagship SUV substantially impairs intended use. If the shift motor was replaced but the issue recurred, or if the dealer misdiagnosed and replaced the entire transfer case unnecessarily, multiple repair attempts for the same drivetrain symptom support a lemon-law claim.

Typical fix

Dealer replaces transfer case active shift motor per TSB 21-048-24; in severe cases full transfer case replacement

TPMS Fails to Warn of Low Tire Pressure — Radio Frequency Hub Software Error (26V559)Safety2024-2026
Symptoms

TPMS warning light does not illuminate when a tire is significantly under-inflated; 'service tire pressure system' cluster message; malfunction indicator lamp; dashes displayed in place of the tire pressure placard values; tire pressure readings that never update. Frequently no warning at all before the failure.

Why it matters for your claim

Measured relevance. On its own this is a thin lemon-law claim: TPMS is a secondary warning system, the defect does not impair drivability, and a single successful software reprogram under the recall does not approach the repair-attempt threshold of Cal. Civ. Code § 1793.2(d). The card matters where the repair history already shows repeat TPMS / RF-hub complaints (dashes in place of placard values, 'service tire pressure system' messages, sensors that will not relearn or update) before or after the 54D reprogram, or where a TPMS that failed to warn preceded a tire failure or blowout. Those visits count toward the repair-attempt tally, and the FMVSS 138 noncompliance supports characterizing the nonconformity as safety-related. Most useful stacked with other open recalls on the same 2024-2026 build cohort for the cumulative days-out-of-service argument.

Typical fix

Under 26V559 (FCA 54D) dealers reprogram the RFH module with updated software, free of charge. Remedy not yet available to owners: dealers notified Sep 9, 2026; owner letters phased Sep 29 - Oct 21, 2026; no interim letter. Owners are told to check tire pressures manually with a gauge until the update is done.

Safety recalls, newest first

  1. Sep 1, 2026 · 26V559

Tires — Tire Pressure Monitoring System (Radio Frequency Hub Software)

    open

A software error in the Radio Frequency Hub (RFH) module can cause the tire pressure monitoring system to lose its stored reference tire pressures or stop updating tire pressure values, so the TPMS may fail to detect a significantly under-inflated tire and/or fail to illuminate the TPMS warning light (FMVSS 138 noncompliance). FCA US identified three separate RFH software root causes between August 2025 and May 2026; the third (pressure values not updating) widened the scope to 2026 model year vehicles.

  6. Apr 1, 2024 · 24V-199

Air Bags: Driver Clockspring / Steering Column Control Module (SCCM)

    closed

SCCM may have an insufficient weld between the internal flexible flat cable and a busbar, preventing the airbag deployment signal from reaching the driver airbag module.

  7. Nov 1, 2023 · 23V-716

Seat Belts: Third-Row Rear Buckle Assembly

    closed

Third-row seat belt buckles may have been scratched or damaged during assembly, rendering them inaccessible or preventing the tongue from latching. Noncompliance with FMVSS No. 208.

  8. Aug 7, 2023 · 23V-545

    Roof/Pillars: Upper B-Pillar Interior Trim

    closed

Upper B-pillar interior trim may not be fully seated at the factory and could obstruct the path of the side curtain air bag (SABIC) during deployment.

  9. Aug 1, 2023 · 23V-577

Back-Over Prevention: Display / CVPAM Software

    closed

Central Vision Park Assist Module (CVPAM) software may prevent the rearview camera signal from displaying on the media screen when the vehicle is in reverse.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act entitles you to a full repurchase or a comparable replacement vehicle if the manufacturer cannot fix a covered defect in a reasonable number of attempts during the warranty period. The law presumes a vehicle qualifies as a lemon if:

  • The same problem required two or more repair attempts and poses a risk of death or serious injury, OR
  • The same problem required four or more repair attempts for any warranty defect, OR
  • The vehicle was out of service for more than 30 cumulative days for warranty repairs.

The three backup-camera recalls — each for the same functional failure — are a textbook pattern. If your 2022–2023 Grand Wagoneer was repaired under 23V-577 and later presented with the same blank-screen symptom that was eventually addressed by 24V-436 or 24V-944, you may have multiple repair attempts for a federally documented safety defect. An airbag that cannot deploy (24V-199) and a seatbelt that will not latch (23V-716) are independently qualifying safety defects under the two-attempt presumption.

A manufacturer buyback includes the full purchase price (minus a reasonable offset for mileage before the defect appeared), plus registration, taxes, and finance charges. Attorney fees are paid by the manufacturer if you win. Consultations are free.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Jeep Grand Wagoneer specifically

The most frustrating Grand Wagoneer issue to catch is an intermittent Uconnect black screen or a backup camera that only fails occasionally. Here is what to do when a dealer writes 'could not duplicate':

1. Record video on your phone every time the screen goes black or the camera fails. A timestamped video showing the symptom is far more persuasive than a verbal description.

2. Ask the service writer to pull all stored DTCs before clearing anything. Dealers sometimes reset fault codes at vehicle check-in. Request a printout of active and pending codes as they existed when you drove in.

3. Reference the specific TSB numbers. For Uconnect black screen, TSB 08-014-24 (and follow-ons 08-202-24 and 08-230-24) describe exactly the symptom cluster. Ask the dealer to note in the repair order whether these TSBs were checked and applied.

4. For backup-camera failure: ask whether all three recall remedies have been completed — 23V-577 (CVPAM), 24V-436 (radio software), and 24V-944 (RVCM). If any one is missing, the symptom can return through the un-patched module.

5. Do not skip 'no problem found' visits. Every repair order — even one that concludes with no fault found — is part of your lemon-law repair-attempt count under California law.

6. If the air suspension warning recurs after a prior repair, bring the prior repair order to the next visit and ask explicitly whether the wiring harness reroute from TSB 08-089-22 was performed, not just the module reflash from TSB 02-001-22. The two fixes address different root causes.

Our take

Three backup-camera recalls covering overlapping model years on the same platform is not a coincidence of software complexity — it is a documented failure to fix the problem. A vehicle that costs more than $90,000 and has been recalled for both a side airbag blocked by loose trim and a driver airbag that may not deploy deserves serious scrutiny. Grand Wagoneer owners who were sold a premium family SUV and are instead managing a cascade of safety recalls, infotainment failures, and an unremedied trim recall have every reason to explore whether California's lemon law provides a path out.

FAQ

Jeep Grand Wagoneer lemon-law questions

Why has my Jeep Grand Wagoneer had three backup-camera recalls?

The 2022–2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (and Wagoneer) had the same functional failure — no image on the screen when reversing — caused by three different software defects in three different modules. Recall 23V-577 (August 2023) fixed a bug in the Central Vision Park Assist Module. Recall 24V-436 (June 2024) addressed a different bug in the radio module. Recall 24V-944 (December 2024) corrected incorrectly programmed Rearview Camera Module firmware on 2024 models. All three fix the same FMVSS 111 (Rear Visibility) noncompliance through different software paths. If your 2022–2023 Grand Wagoneer received a repair under the first recall and then showed the same blank-camera symptom later, that subsequent visit is a second repair attempt for the same safety defect — a strong data point for a California lemon-law claim.

Is there an airbag recall on the Jeep Grand Wagoneer?

Yes — two separate airbag recalls apply to Grand Wagoneers depending on model year. Recall 23V-545 (August 2023) covers 2022–2023 Grand Wagoneers: the upper B-pillar interior trim was not fully installed at the factory, and the loose panel can block the side curtain airbag from deploying in a crash (FMVSS 226 noncompliance). The fix is a dealer inspection and trim reseat or replacement at no charge. Recall 24V-199 (April 2024) covers 2023–2024 Grand Wagoneers: a bad weld inside the steering column control module can prevent the driver airbag from receiving its deployment signal in a frontal crash (FMVSS 208 noncompliance). The fix is inspection and possible replacement of the steering column control module. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov to confirm whether either recall is open on your vehicle.

Can I file a lemon-law claim for my Grand Wagoneer because of the backup camera recalls?

Potentially, yes — especially if your vehicle needed more than one dealer visit for a backup camera that would not display in Reverse. Under California's Song-Beverly Act, two or more repair attempts for a defect that poses a risk of serious injury (a federally noncompliant backup camera qualifies) creates a presumption that the vehicle is a lemon. Because three separate recalls targeted the same failure on overlapping model years, a 2022–2023 Grand Wagoneer owner who had a repair under 23V-577 and then experienced the same symptom before or after 24V-436 may already have the required repair history. An attorney can review your repair orders at no cost to determine whether your record crosses the legal threshold.

My Grand Wagoneer Uconnect screen keeps going black or restarting — is this a known issue?

Yes. Stellantis has issued multiple Technical Service Bulletins for exactly this symptom on 2022–2024 Grand Wagoneers. TSB 08-014-24 covers black screens, spontaneous reboots, passenger display failures, CarPlay not working, and excessive battery drain linked to the Uconnect 5 radio module. Follow-on TSBs 08-202-24 and 08-230-24 address ongoing software maturation for the same symptom cluster. Each is fixed by a dealer software update. If you have returned for the same screen-blackout or reboot issue after a prior software update, that is another repair attempt. Four or more attempts for the same non-safety defect triggers California's lemon-law presumption, and two attempts may suffice if the black screen disabled the backup camera.

What does the Jeep Grand Wagoneer third-row seatbelt recall cover?

Recall 23V-716 (announced November 2023) covers about 97,066 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs from the 2022–2024 model years. The third-row seatbelt buckles were scratched or damaged during the assembly process, which can prevent the tongue from latching into the buckle. Third-row passengers who cannot fasten their seatbelts are at significantly higher risk of injury in a crash. The remedy is a free dealer inspection and replacement of the third-row buckle assemblies as needed. If your third-row buckle still won't latch after a recall repair visit, bring it back — and keep the repair order, as that second visit adds to your lemon-law record.

Is the 2022–2024 Jeep Grand Wagoneer a lemon?

Whether your specific Grand Wagoneer qualifies as a lemon depends on your repair history, not just the recall list. A vehicle qualifies under California law when the same defect has required two or more unsuccessful repair attempts for a safety issue, or four or more for any other defect, or when the vehicle has been out of service for over 30 cumulative days. The 2022–2024 Grand Wagoneer has been the subject of six or more NHTSA safety recalls spanning backup cameras (three separate campaigns), two airbag-system failures, a seatbelt buckle defect, and exterior trim detachment. Owners who have returned to the dealer repeatedly for backup-camera failures, Uconnect black screens, or airbag warning lights may already have the repair history needed. A free case review with a California lemon-law attorney takes less than an hour and can tell you definitively where you stand.
