Land Rover’s Pedestrian Warning System Issue
In September 2022, Land Rover testing a pedestrian warning system discovered that it’s too quiet. A stop-shipment order was issued to guarantee that the fifth-generation Range Rover and brand-new Range Rover Sport actively emitted the required PWS sound levels. Land Rover entrusted its Product Safety & Compliance Committee with the investigation, and an engineering team was actively brought in to thoroughly assess the magnitude of this issue.
Research and Discovery
Between October 2022 and November 2022, both plug-in hybrids and full-electric automobiles were researched, including the Jaguar I-Pace. The engineers were notified that older Range Rover and Range Rover Sport vehicles, along with the Jaguar I-Pace, could be impacted by this issue. Documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that the problem lies with the sound files installed in these vehicles, potentially causing trouble for Jaguar Land Rover if left unattended.
Resolution and Recall
The Recall Determination Committee decided to update the sound files to ensure proper emission of sound levels by the PWS. This action was necessary because the low sound levels of the pedestrian warning system violate federal motor vehicle safety standard 141 for hybrid and electric vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover has not received any reports of accidents, injuries, fires, warranty claims, or field issues related to this problem. Starting from February 9th, dealers in the US will update the audio amplifier software free of charge for the affected Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and I-Pace models. Owners of these vehicles will be notified by first-class mail before March 24th.
