The overview

What owners are dealing with

Ford's 14th-generation F-150 (2021-2026, P702 platform) launched with promises of an all-new aluminum body, advanced SYNC 4 technology, and the most capable towing setup in the lineup. What came with it, for tens of thousands of owners, was a string of serious, safety-critical defects that have produced more than ten federal recall campaigns in just five model years. The two most alarming: an electric parking brake that activates on its own while you are driving, and rear axle hub bolts that fracture under load, potentially allowing the truck to roll away when parked or lose rear drive power without warning. The parking brake wiring problem (Recall 23V509, July 2023) affected 870,701 trucks, nearly every 2021-2023 F-150 with a single exhaust. NHTSA records show 299 documented unintended parking brake activations, 19 of them while the truck was moving. The rear axle hub bolt fracture spread across two recall campaigns (23V896 and 25V512) covering a combined ~216,000 trucks from model years 2021 through 2025. Both recalls remain open as of mid-2026. Beyond those two standout issues, 14th-gen F-150 owners have faced engine stalls from a defective low-pressure fuel pump (850,000-unit open recall, no remedy yet as of mid-2025), rearview cameras that freeze or go black while reversing, 10-speed transmissions that drop to Neutral mid-drive, and, for 2021 model year trucks with the 2.7L EcoBoost, intake valves that fracture and destroy the engine. If your 2021-2026 F-150 has been back to the dealer for any of these problems more than once, or has spent a significant stretch out of service, California's lemon law may require Ford to buy your truck back.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act gives you the right to a repurchase, replacement, or cash settlement when Ford cannot fix a defect within a reasonable number of repair attempts or within a reasonable time. For safety-related defects — like a parking brake that fires while you are driving or a truck that can roll away in Park — California law presumes two repair attempts may be sufficient to establish your rights. For other substantial defects, four repair attempts, or 30 or more cumulative days out of service during your warranty period, can trigger the same presumption. If your F-150 qualifies, you may be entitled to: a full repurchase of what you paid (minus a mileage offset calculated from when the problem first appeared), a comparable replacement vehicle, or a negotiated cash settlement. Ford pays your attorney fees if you win — meaning most California lemon law cases cost the owner nothing up front. The parking brake recall's continued-open status, the two-campaign rear axle hub bolt story, the fuel pump recall with no remedy available, and persistent transmission problems all represent the type of nonconformities California lemon law was designed to address. The above is general information and is not legal advice; your rights depend on your specific service history and dates.

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Ford F-150 specifically

Ford dealers routinely close repair orders as 'unable to duplicate' (UTD) or 'no trouble found' (NTF) for intermittent safety problems like the electric parking brake activation or a transmission that drops to Neutral and re-engages before you reach the dealer. That does not end your rights — it just means you need to build a better paper trail. Here is how: 1. Document every event immediately. For the electric parking brake, record the exact date, time, speed, and what you felt. For a stall or Neutral drop, note the engine conditions (hot or cold, fuel level, road speed). Photograph any warning lights before clearing. 2. Request all stored and pending Diagnostic Trouble Codes in writing. The electric parking brake wiring fault (chafe causing a ground fault on the EPB circuit) and the transmission's false low-pressure event each leave electronic footprints in the module memory even after the codes clear themselves. 3. Ask the dealer to check these specific open recalls before closing the RO: Recall 23S35 / 23V509 (electric parking brake harness), Recall 23S65 / 23V896 and Recall 25S82 / 25V512 (rear axle hub bolt), Recall 25S75 / 25V455 (fuel pump), and Recall 25S49 / 25V315 (SYNC 4 rearview camera). If your VIN is listed and the remedy has not been applied, the dealer is legally required to perform the recall work. 4. For the fuel pump recall (25V455): as of mid-2025 there is no remedy yet. If you stall and the dealer sends you home with 'nothing to do today,' document that in writing. An open recall with no available remedy and a recurring stall symptom is a strong lemon fact pattern. 5. Save every repair order, even UTD ones. California counts them all.

Our take

The 14th-generation F-150 launched with more open safety recalls per model year than almost any F-150 in memory. The electric parking brake activating while you drive, a rear axle that can strand you or roll your truck in a parking lot, an engine that stalls with no fix available — these are not minor inconveniences. If your 2021–2025 F-150 has made repeated dealer trips for any of these issues, the service records you already have may be enough to open a California lemon law case. Pull together every repair order and get a free case review before your warranty window closes.

FAQ

Ford F-150 lemon-law questions

Is my 2021–2023 F-150 part of the electric parking brake recall?

Likely yes, if your truck has a single exhaust system. NHTSA recall 23V509 (Ford recall 23S35, issued July 2023) covers 870,701 F-150s from model years 2021 through 2023 equipped with a single exhaust. The defect: the rear axle wiring harness repeatedly contacts the rear axle housing; abrasion wears through the protective tape and wire insulation; exposed copper wires ground on the axle housing and cause the electric parking brake to activate without driver input. Ford's warranty data recorded 918 field reports and 299 documented unintended EPB activations — 19 while the truck was in motion — before the recall was issued. The recall remains open as of mid-2026; check your VIN at nhtsa.gov. The remedy involves inspecting and, if damaged, replacing the rear axle wiring harness and adding a protective strap and tape wrap to prevent recurrence.

What is the Ford F-150 rear axle hub bolt recall and how serious is it?

It is serious. Ford issued two separate recall campaigns for the same rear axle hub bolt defect. Recall 23V896 (Ford 23S65, December 2023) covered 112,965 trucks from model years 2021 through 2023 with the Trailer Tow Max Duty package and a 9.75-inch heavy-duty 3/4-float rear axle. The hub bolt can fracture due to fatigue; the fractured bolt allows micro-movement between the hub splines and the axle shaft splines; corrosion accelerates the wear; and eventually the splines strip completely. A truck with stripped splines can roll in Park without the parking brake applied, or lose rear-wheel drive power while moving. Recall 25V512 (Ford 25S82, August 2025) then expanded coverage to approximately 103,000 additional trucks from model years 2023 through 2025. Both recalls remain open. The remedy — replacing both rear axle shaft assemblies with a revised design — is available under 25V512.

My 2021 or 2022 F-150 stalled on the highway. Is that a recall?

Yes. NHTSA recall 25V455 (Ford recall 25S75, July 2025) covers approximately 850,000 vehicles — including 2021 and 2022 F-150s built between July 1, 2021 and July 31, 2022 — for a low-pressure fuel pump defect. The pump was manufactured outside the designed internal clearance specification; reduced internal clearances increase friction, and the pump can fail under low-fuel or high-ambient-temperature conditions, cutting fuel supply and stalling the engine while the truck is moving. Ford projects that approximately 10 percent of recalled vehicles will experience this failure. As of July 2025, no remedy had been released; Ford issued interim owner notifications and promised a second notice when a fix is available. If your truck has stalled and the dealer says there is nothing they can do yet because no remedy exists, document that response in writing. An active recall with no remedy and a recurring stall is a strong lemon law fact pattern in California.

My F-150 backup camera freezes or goes black in reverse. Is that covered by a recall?

Yes. NHTSA recall 25V315 (Ford recall 25S49, May 2025) covers 527,371 F-150 units from model years 2021 through 2024 equipped with the SYNC 4 infotainment system running APIM software versions 1.7 through 1.9. A software defect in the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) can cause the rearview camera image to delay, freeze on a still frame, or fail to display at all when the truck is in Reverse. Because federal safety standards (FMVSS 111) require a functioning rearview camera, NHTSA treats this as a safety recall. The remedy is a free APIM software update, available over the air or at your dealer. If your dealer performed the OTA update and the camera still freezes, or if the issue returns, that second visit is an additional repair attempt for the same defect — relevant to a potential lemon law claim.

Can my 2021–2025 F-150 qualify as a lemon under California law?

It may, depending on your specific repair history. California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act presumes a vehicle is a lemon if the manufacturer has made two or more repair attempts for a safety-related defect, or four or more attempts for any substantial defect, or if the vehicle has been out of service for 30 or more cumulative days during the warranty period. For the 14th-gen F-150, there are multiple pathways. The electric parking brake recall (23V509) is a safety defect — two repair attempts for the same chafing symptom could trigger the presumption. If you are waiting on the fuel pump recall (25V455) with no remedy available and the truck keeps stalling, time spent waiting and trips made for that defect count. The rear axle hub bolt defect spanning two recall campaigns is another strong angle if your truck was brought in under both 23V896 and 25V512. The analysis depends on your actual repair orders, mileage at first complaint, and dates of service visits. A California lemon law attorney can review your records at no charge; Ford pays the attorney's fee if you prevail.

My F-150's parking brake engaged while I was driving. Is that dangerous, and what do I do now?

Yes, it is dangerous. An electric parking brake that activates while the truck is moving can cause sudden rear-wheel lockup, loss of directional control, and a crash. NHTSA recall 23V509 documents exactly this hazard across 870,701 trucks. Nineteen owners in Ford's own warranty database reported unintended activation while driving before the recall was issued. If this happened to you: first, bring your truck to the dealer immediately and ask them to apply Recall 23S35. The remedy is inspecting the rear axle wiring harness and replacing it if damaged, plus adding protective hardware to prevent re-chafing. Second, document the event in detail — date, speed, road conditions, what you felt, and any warning lights. If the parking brake activates again after the recall repair, that is a second repair attempt for the same safety defect, which under California lemon law may be enough to trigger your right to a buyback or replacement.
