The case

Check engine light on the day of purchase — then the same fuel-sensor fault came back four times, and the truck lost power

Our client leased a new 2022 RAM 1500. It went back to the dealer with 56 miles on the odometer, the same day it was delivered, with the check engine light on. It was back the next day.

The dealer kept finding the same fault code, P0183, for the fuel temperature sensor circuit. They replaced the fuel/water separator, then the fuel temperature sensor, fuel filter assembly and fuel pressure sensor, then the filter assembly and a fuel line. On the fourth repair, the truck would not accelerate, and a technician found a loose, corroded pin at the sensor connector. FCA's safety recall 01A also replaced the truck's high-pressure fuel pump. The battery also failed twice; the second time, the truck had to be towed in.

The turning point

Why the manufacturer paid

Under the Song-Beverly Act, a manufacturer that can't fix a warranty defect in a reasonable number of attempts must repurchase or replace the vehicle. A defect repaired four or more times, including once with loss of acceleration, is well past that point.

The result

How it ended

FCA repurchased the truck, paid off the $36,079.18 lease balance, and waived the mileage offset entirely. Our client received $45,890.51: $28,860.20 in statutory refund plus $17,030.31 in civil penalties/additional recovery, 1.6× the statutory amount.

What this case shows

When the same problem keeps coming back, every repair order builds the case. Four attempts at one fault is strong evidence.
