The case

i-stop, engine and hybrid-system warnings — two battery replacements, a headlight fault and a glitching screen

Our client leased a new 2024 Mazda CX-90. About a year into the lease, the dashboard began lighting up with i-stop, engine and hybrid-system malfunction warnings, and the infotainment screen started freezing.

The dealer confirmed a headlight-system fault and reprogrammed it under a Mazda bulletin. The electrical warnings were traced to a failing battery, and a replacement was ordered. On the next visit the lithium mild-hybrid battery was replaced. Mazda also issued recall MSP66 for the engine warning light and reprogrammed the powertrain modules. On the last visit, the warnings and screen glitches were back, now joined by an airbag system light.

The turning point

Why the manufacturer paid

Thirty days out of service is a key threshold under California lemon law. This vehicle passed it with verified electrical and battery failures, and the manufacturer's repairs weren't holding.

The result

How it ended

Mazda repurchased the CX-90 and paid off the $40,482.31 lease balance. Our client received $9,818.00: $7,561.87 in statutory damages plus $2,256.14 in civil penalties/additional recovery.
