Third-Row Seatbelt Entrapment / Damage — Recall 21V190 (2021)
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
2021-2026 Cadillac Escalade diesel owners report stalling, no-start, and limp mode. 16 recalls. Learn your California lemon law rights — free case review.
You spent north of $80,000 on a Cadillac Escalade with the 3.0L Duramax diesel — drawn by the promise of V8 torque with better fuel economy and a long-distance range that means fewer fuel stops on that cross-country haul. Cadillac's marketing promised refinement, Super Cruise on the highway, and the kind of bulletproof reliability you expect when you choose the diesel option over the base gas engine. What many owners have discovered instead is a first-generation diesel powertrain in a platform not yet fully sorted for it: a camshaft exciter wheel that arrives bent from the factory, causing mysterious no-start events your dealer cannot duplicate; a fuel pump driver module that can fail without warning and leave you stranded on the freeway; a transmission cooler line that exits the assembly line already twisted, cooking your ATF from day one; and a coolant control valve that triggers limp mode and a 'Check Engine' light GM eventually acknowledged with a 15-year / 150,000-mile Special Coverage — but only after thousands of owners had already paid out of pocket for the repair.
On top of the diesel-specific issues, the platform carries a stack of NHTSA recalls shared with every other full-size GM SUV: two separate seatbelt safety recalls, an airbag warning-light failure, a rear driveshaft heat-treatment defect, a suspension bolt recall, a brake-fluid warning software failure, and — for the 2026 model year — a transfer case missing an oil pickup tube that prompted a 'do not drive' advisory. Sixteen formal recalls across the 2021-2026 diesel Escalade span every critical system from fuel delivery to brakes to wheels.
The diesel Escalade's problems are not the result of bad luck. They reflect a manufacturer that brought a complex inline-six diesel to market in a segment where it had no prior production experience, addressed known defects through service bulletins rather than recalls, and left owners to discover them one no-start event at a time. If your diesel Escalade has been to the dealer repeatedly and you still don't have a reliable vehicle, California law may give you meaningful options.
The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
A damaged seatbelt that can fail in a crash is a safety defect under Song-Beverly — the highest tier of lemon-law claims. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(e)(2), any defect that is 'likely to cause death or serious bodily injury if the vehicle is driven' may require only two unsuccessful repair attempts to trigger the repurchase presumption. If a 2021 Escalade owner's third-row seatbelt was not correctly inspected or re-routed during the recall service, and the damage was later discovered, that constitutes a failed remedy and supports a lemon claim.
GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the third-row outboard seat belts, replacing any damaged seat belts, and rerouting them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on April 21, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, GMC customer service at 1-800-462
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
An airbag warning light that fails to illuminate masks a potentially life-threatening SRS malfunction. This is a Song-Beverly safety defect. If a 2021 diesel Escalade owner experienced a repeat airbag warning light failure after the recall gateway module software update, or if the vehicle was involved in a crash in which airbags did not deploy and this recall had not been performed, the manufacturer's liability is significantly heightened. Document all prior SRS-related dealer visits.
The communications gateway module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 1, 2021. Owners may contact Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, Chevrolet
engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall
An unexpected engine stall at highway speed is one of the most dangerous conditions a driver can face, and NHTSA classified it as a safety recall. Under Song-Beverly, a stall defect that has been the subject of a manufacturer recall — and that reoccurs or persists after the recall remedy (FPDCM replacement per 21V739) — is strong grounds for a buyback. Note: 2021-2023 owners should also investigate TSB 24-NA-139 (iss-18), which covers a related but distinct FPDCM component.
Dealers will replace the fuel pump power control module, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 14, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020; Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006; or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number fo
clunking from drivetrain; loss of drive power; vehicle may roll when parked
A driveshaft failure at highway speed can cause sudden loss of vehicle control, placing it squarely within Song-Beverly's safety-defect category. If a 2021 diesel Escalade owner experienced driveline vibration, clunking, or loss of drive after the recall was supposedly remedied, or if the recall was not completed before a driveshaft failure occurred, the manufacturer bears clear liability. Obtain the dealer's repair completion confirmation and mileage as documentary evidence.
Dealers will replace the left and/or right rear driveshaft assemblies, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on March 14, 2022. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020; Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM'
driver seat cushion loose; seat fastener recall; seat may not stay secured
This is a second, distinct seatbelt safety recall (separate from 21V190) affecting both 2021 and 2022 diesel Escalades: an improperly formed rivet in the third-row buckle assembly can fail to restrain occupants in a crash. Two recall-backed seatbelt defects on consecutive model years demonstrates a systematic quality failure and significantly strengthens any lemon claim for vehicles with unresolved third-row seatbelt concerns. Request repair orders confirming the buckle assembly was physically replaced, not merely inspected.
Dealers will inspect the rivet head formation on both the left and right side third-row seat belt buckle assemblies and replace seat belt buckle assemblies, as necessary, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk were mailed September 28, 2022. Owner noti
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
DRL non-deactivation is an FMVSS 108 noncompliance recall — a regulatory violation, but with a lower crash-risk profile than a stall or brake defect. Under Song-Beverly, it counts as a recall-backed defect adding to the cumulative repair-attempt tally. If the BCM software update was not performed before vehicle sale, or if the DRL symptom persisted after the update, document it as one more unresolved repair on the vehicle's record.
Dealers will provide an over-the-air (OTA) update for the Body Control Module software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 15, 2022. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac customer service at 1-
tail light out; exterior light warning; reduced rear visibility
Same BCM software defect as 22V827 but affecting 2022-2023 model year diesel Escalades. As a compliance recall, it adds to the repair-history record. Owners of 2022-2023 diesel Escalades who also experienced transmission (24V797 / iss-10 for 2021, or 26V085 / iss-13 for 2022 gas) or engine issues may find the cumulative recall burden — multiple systems requiring dealer visits — supports a Song-Beverly substantial-impairment argument.
The body control module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 23, 2023. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or Cadillac custome
front suspension noise; stabilizer bar loose; vehicle pulls or clunks
A broken suspension bolt causing rear-wheel misalignment at highway speed is a crash-risk safety defect. 2023 diesel Escalade owners who notice rear-end wandering, uneven tire wear, or pulling should confirm this recall was completed. If symptoms persist after recall bolt replacement, that is a failed repair attempt under Song-Beverly — request a written repair order documenting both the recall work and any residual alignment issue.
Dealers will replace both rear suspension outer control arm bolts, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 14, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020; Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006; and GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's
brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light
Failure of the brake low-fluid warning telltale is a FMVSS 135 noncompliance that directly affects crash avoidance. Under Song-Beverly, a braking-system safety recall is among the most powerful lemon-law triggers: two dealer visits for brake-related defects on a safety recall vehicle can satisfy the two-visit safety presumption. 2023-2024 diesel Escalade owners should confirm the OTA or dealer eBCM software update was applied and documented on a repair order.
The Electronic Brake Control Module (eBCM) software will be updated through an over-the-air (OTA) update or by a dealer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 25, 2024. Owners can contact GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, o
transmission shifts unexpectedly; hesitation; harsh shift; transmission warning
Sudden rear-wheel lock-up at highway speed is a catastrophic loss-of-control event. NHTSA classified this as a safety recall. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22(e)(2), a safety defect creating death or serious injury risk may entitle an owner to a presumption of lemon status after just two repair attempts. 2021 diesel Escalade owners who experienced harsh shifting or early signs of valve wear before the recall was announced may have a strong buyback claim — especially if the TCM software update does not fully resolve shift quality.
Dealers will install new transmission control module software, free of charge. GM will provide a special coverage program to cover the repair of transmissions that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve. Owner notification letters were mailed December 12, 2024.
engine knocking; engine stalls; sudden loss of power; check engine light; engine failure recall
IMPORTANT: Recall 25V274 covers ONLY vehicles equipped with the 6.2L L87 V8 gasoline engine. The 3.0L LM2/LZ0 Duramax diesel Escalade is EXCLUDED from this recall — the connecting-rod and crankshaft defect is specific to the L87's manufacturing line. Diesel Escalade owners who received notice of this recall should confirm their VIN is genuinely included before presenting to the dealer. If a diesel Escalade's engine has failed, the applicable TSBs are the CMP exciter-wheel (iss-17) and FPDCM (iss-18) bulletins.
Dealers will inspect the engine, and as necessary, repair or replace the engine. For vehicles that pass inspection, dealers will add higher viscosity oil, install 6 oil fill cap, replace the oil filter, and update the owner's manual. Repairs will be performed free of charge. fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall
A fuel leak in a rollover crash creates a fire risk — a life-safety defect. This recall is triggered by a service error: a dealer installed the wrong replacement fuel tank. 2021 diesel Escalade owners who had any fuel system service work at a GM dealer between 2022 and 2025 should verify their fuel tank was not incorrectly replaced. If the incorrect tank was installed and the vehicle was driven with a fire risk, the dealer's repair error — and GM's failure to timely correct it — supports a Song-Beverly claim.
Dealers will inspect for the correct fuel tank and replace it, if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 5, 2025. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-878
transmission shifts unexpectedly; hesitation; harsh shift; transmission warning
Recall 26V085 covers 2022 Cadillac Escalade models with gasoline engines and 10-speed transmissions built April–September 2022. It is distinct from diesel recall 24V797 — unique hardware in the 2022 gas production window increases valve wear rate. 2022 diesel Escalade owners are NOT covered by 26V085 but should confirm their transmission fluid condition and shift quality; if harsh shifting persists, the 10L80 twisted cooler line TSB (iss-19) is the more applicable diesel-applicable concern.
Dealers will install new transmission control module (TCM) software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 7, 2026. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006, GMC customer service at GMC 1-800-462-8782 or Chevrolet cu
engine cranks but won't start; extended crank time before starting; intermittent no-start especially when cold or after short trip; check engine light on; P0341 code stored; dealer cannot duplicate on first visit; stall while driving after extended crank episodes; engine reluctant to fire after fueling
A no-start or stall defect that requires 40-50 hours of labor to correct — and may recur — can satisfy Song-Beverly's substantial-impairment standard without the owner even reaching three visits. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(b), if the manufacturer cannot repair the defect within 30 days (likely given this labor burden), the presumption of a reasonable number of repair attempts is triggered. Repeated dealer 'cannot duplicate' findings strengthen a lemon claim — document every tow and no-start event with date, mileage, and RO.
First: ECM software update per TSB PIP5823B. If no-start persists: borescope inspection of CMP exciter wheel; install 0.5mm shim if undamaged; replace exciter wheel if bent or contacting timing chain. Full mechanical repair can require 40-50 hours of labor.
engine cranks but won't start; stalls unexpectedly while driving at any speed; rough idle; loss of acceleration; fuel gauge inoperative or jumps erratically; check engine light on; P129F or P023F codes; vehicle shuts off without warning on highway; cannot restart after stall
An unexpected stall at highway speed constitutes a substantial safety defect under Song-Beverly. If the FPDCM fails after the prior fuel pump recall (21V739) was performed, the owner has documented that the manufacturer's remedy did not resolve the underlying fuel-delivery problem — powerful grounds for a lemon buyback or replacement. Two or more stall-related visits on different root causes (FPDCM + recall) count toward the repair-attempts threshold.
Replace K111 FPDCM with VIN-appropriate part number per Electronic Parts Catalog (13554821, 13554820, or 13540029). Supersedes PIP5964 series. Bulletin 24-NA-139 is the current authoritative repair document.
harsh or jerky gear changes especially at low speed; transmission shudder; surge or hesitation when accelerating; transmission stall or neutral flare; high transmission fluid temperature warning; P27EC code; rough shifts on low-mileage vehicle; transmission feels like it's slipping
Transmission shudder and harsh shifting on a near-new six-figure luxury SUV is a textbook substantial-impairment claim. If a dealer misdiagnoses the cause and performs unnecessary TCM or valve-body work before finding the twisted cooler line, each failed repair visit counts toward Song-Beverly's repair-attempt threshold. Request all diagnostic and repair steps be documented on the RO.
Inspect ATF cooler lines (underbody panels may need removal for visibility). Untwist cooler line; replace if misshaped. Check and top off ATF. No internal transmission disassembly required if caught early.
check engine light; P26BB, P2B60, or P1098 DTC codes; cooling fan continues running after engine off; vehicle enters reduced power or limp mode; overheating warning; failed emissions test; rough idle; CEL recurs after reset
Limp mode on a daily-driven luxury SUV substantially impairs its use — Song-Beverly's core trigger. Because GM issued Special Coverage (acknowledging the defect), the manufacturer-awareness prong is easily satisfied. If the coolant valve has been replaced once and the CEL recurs, a second repair visit on the same system may satisfy the two-visit safety-defect presumption or the four-visit general presumption under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22.
Dealer replaces engine coolant control valve at no charge under GM Special Coverage N252508341 (15 years / 150,000 miles from original in-service date, regardless of ownership). Owners who previously paid for this repair may request reimbursement from GM.

Every item below comes from this vehicle's documented defects. The more you recognize, the more a free case review is worth your time.
Under the California Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1790 et seq.), California consumers who purchase or lease a new motor vehicle may be entitled to a repair, replacement, or refund if the manufacturer or its authorized dealer is unable to repair a defect that substantially impairs the vehicle's use, value, or safety after a reasonable number of attempts. This is not legal advice; laws and eligibility standards change. Consult an attorney for advice specific to your situation.
FOR DIESEL ESCALADE OWNERS, SPECIFIC DEFECTS THAT MAY QUALIFY:
Important: The 'reasonable number of attempts' standard is evaluated by a court based on all facts. California lemon law applies to the balance of the original manufacturer's warranty period. Keep every repair order. Law as of June 2026. This is general information only — not legal advice and creates no attorney-client relationship.
“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.
Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.
Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.
Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.
Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.
Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.
Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.
The 3.0L Duramax diesel's most frustrating defects — the CMP exciter-wheel no-start and the FPDCM stall — are intermittent by nature. Your dealer may not be able to reproduce them on command, and may write 'unable to verify concern' on your repair order. Here is what to do:
1. DOCUMENT EVERY EVENT IN REAL TIME. The moment your diesel Escalade fails to start or stalls, photograph your dashboard (showing DTC codes if visible), write down the exact date, odometer reading, outside temperature, and how long the vehicle had been sitting. Note whether you heard extended cranking. This record is your evidence.
2. DO NOT CLEAR THE CODES YOURSELF. If your scan tool or the dealer's reset clears DTCs P0341, P129F, or P023F before they are photographed and documented, that evidence is gone. Ask the dealer to record all stored and pending codes before any diagnosis begins, and request a printout.
3. REQUEST SPECIFIC TSB APPLICATION. When you drop off the vehicle for a no-start or stall complaint, explicitly ask the service advisor: 'Has TSB PIP5806B / PIP5823B been applied for the CMP exciter wheel? Has TSB 24-NA-139 (PIP5964) been applied for the FPDCM?' If neither has been performed, request it in writing on the repair order — even if they cannot duplicate the concern that visit.
4. INSIST ON A WRITTEN REPAIR ORDER FOR EVERY VISIT. Under California law (Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2), the manufacturer must keep records of each repair attempt. Even if the dealer says 'nothing wrong,' that 'unable to duplicate' RO counts as a repair attempt toward your lemon-law claim. Never leave without a signed copy.
5. REQUEST AN EXTENDED DIAGNOSTIC PERIOD. Ask the dealer to keep the vehicle overnight and attempt cold-start diagnostics. The CMP exciter-wheel defect is more pronounced when cold; an engine sitting at ambient temperature is more likely to exhibit P0341.
6. ESCALATE TO GM CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE. If the dealer dismisses your concern three times, call GM at 1-800-333-4223 and open a case. Reference the TSB numbers and your repair order dates. GM may authorize a field technical service engineer (TAC) inspection — which can provide the objective documentation a lemon claim needs.
7. TRACK THE 30-DAY CLOCK. Under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2(b), if the vehicle is out of service for more than 30 cumulative days for warranty repairs, you may be entitled to a replacement or refund. A 40-50 hour CMP exciter-wheel repair alone can exhaust that limit in a single shop visit.
The 3.0L Duramax diesel in the Escalade is a genuinely capable engine on paper — smooth, torquey, and efficient. The problem is that GM brought it to market in the full-size SUV platform without fully resolving known first-generation issues, and when those issues emerged in the field, the response was TSBs rather than recalls: official acknowledgment that something is wrong, paired with a framework that puts the burden on the owner to experience a failure, present to the dealer, and hope the technician knows about the bulletin.
Sixteen recalls across six model years — covering seatbelts, airbags, fuel pumps, driveshafts, suspension, brakes, transmission, fuel tanks, the owner's manual, and the wheels — represent a quality record that, in our view, substantially impairs the ownership experience regardless of whether any individual defect rises to a legal threshold. If your diesel Escalade has been making trips to the dealer that total more than 30 days out of service, or if any single defect has required three or more repair visits, California law may give you a path to a replacement or refund. Those rights are worth understanding.
— The Margarian Law team
If your Cadillac Escalade diesel has been to the dealer two or more times for an engine stall, no-start, transmission issue, or other defect — and you still don't have a reliable vehicle — you may have options under California's lemon law. Margarian Law has handled thousands of lemon-law cases and offers a free, no-obligation case review. There are no upfront fees, and if your case qualifies, the manufacturer typically pays our attorneys' fees.
The most common cause is a bent or damaged camshaft position sensor exciter wheel, addressed in GM TSB PIP5806B/PIP5823B. The trigger wheel can arrive from the factory warped, sending a corrupt signal to the ECM and setting DTC P0341. GM's first-line remedy is an ECM software update (PIP5823B). If the no-start persists, a borescope inspection is required; a physically bent wheel may need replacement — a 40-50 hour repair. A separate cause is FPDCM failure (TSB 24-NA-139, iss-18), which also causes no-start and stall. Both TSBs should be ruled out before any other diagnosis. If your dealer cannot duplicate the condition, request both TSBs be applied and document every no-start event with date and mileage.
Yes. NHTSA recall 24V797 covers 2021 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models equipped with the 3.0L LM2 diesel engine. The transmission control valve can fail and cause rear wheels to lock up momentarily, increasing crash risk. GM's remedy is a TCM software update that monitors for valve wear approximately 10,000 miles before a lock-up event could occur. A separate recall, 26V085, covers 2022 gas-engine Escalades for the same symptom but is a distinct defect affecting different hardware. Diesel Escalade owners experiencing harsh shifts, clunking, or any rear-wheel hesitation should verify recall 24V797 has been completed at their dealer.
Yes — GM issued Special Coverage N252508341 specifically for this defect on 2021-2023 Cadillac Escalade with the 3.0L LM2 Duramax engine. The engine coolant control valve can fail an onboard diagnostic test, triggering P26BB, P2B60, or P1098 codes and causing limp mode or fan run-on after shutdown. Coverage extends to 15 years or 150,000 miles from the original in-service date, regardless of current ownership. Bring your vehicle to a Cadillac dealer and reference Special Coverage N252508341 — the repair is at no charge. If you previously paid out of pocket for this repair, you may be eligible for reimbursement from GM.
Owners of 2021-2026 diesel Escalades may qualify under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act if the manufacturer or its dealer is unable to repair a defect that substantially impairs the vehicle's use, value, or safety after a reasonable number of attempts. For safety defects like stalling or no-start — which the Escalade diesel has two documented TSBs addressing (CMP exciter wheel and FPDCM failure) — as few as two failed repair attempts may trigger the statutory presumption under Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22. Additionally, if the vehicle has been out of service more than 30 cumulative days, a separate entitlement to repurchase or replacement may apply. This is general information, not legal advice — consult an attorney about your specific facts.
These are two distinct components. Recall 21V739 covers the Fuel Pump Power Control Module in 2021 diesel Escalades — a supplier manufacturing defect that can cause fuel pump failure and stall. TSB 24-NA-139 (PIP5964) covers the separate K111 Fuel Pump Driver Control Module (FPDCM) across 2021-2023 diesels — an internal short that also causes no-start, stall, rough idle, and erratic fuel gauge, with DTCs P129F and P023F. If your 2021 Escalade had the recall repair completed but still stalls, the FPDCM (a different part) may be the root cause. Inform your dealer of both TSB numbers and ask them to check for both fault codes before closing the repair order.
This is a well-documented defect: the engine coolant control valve on 3.0L LM2 Duramax diesel engines can fail, triggering DTCs P26BB, P2B60, or P1098 and causing cooling fans to continue running after shutdown. GM formally acknowledged the problem by issuing Special Coverage N252508341, which extends the warranty on this specific repair to 15 years or 150,000 miles from original in-service date, regardless of who currently owns the vehicle. Tell your Cadillac dealer to reference this Special Coverage number — the valve replacement is at no charge. If your dealer has replaced the coolant control valve once already and the CEL has returned, that recurring pattern on the same defect can support a Song-Beverly lemon-law claim.
