Fuel Tank / Fuel Filler Defect - Fuel Leak or Reduced Fuel Capacity
fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall
Acura TLX (2021-2025): 5 NHTSA recalls — engine stall, brake, fuel leak. Silent AWD loss under NHTSA investigation. Know your CA lemon law rights.
You spent $45,000 to $60,000 on an Acura TLX because the badge meant something: Sports/Luxury, Honda reliability dressed in upscale clothes, and — if you chose the Type S — a twin-turbocharged V6 that was supposed to challenge the Germans. The 2021 redesign brought a wider platform, standard SH-AWD, and a new True Touchpad infotainment system. Reviewers were cautiously optimistic; IIHS awarded a Top Safety Pick+.
Then owners started driving.
By 2026, NHTSA had logged over 90 complaints across 2021-2023 model years, led by an alarming cluster: SH-AWD transfer case splines were shearing — silently, with no warning lights and no fault codes — stranding drivers in front-wheel drive while they believed they still had all-wheel-drive capability. NHTSA opened Defect Petition DP26001 in March 2026. The Type S simultaneously received a fuel-injection software recall (25V031000) covering 294,612 vehicles for engine stall risk. A brake pedal pivot pin recall (25V391000) covered every 2021-2025 TLX. A fuel tank weld defect (24V950000) required full tank replacement on 2021-2023 models.
Other owners encountered AcuraWatch radar hard-braking on a clear freeway at 75 MPH. One NHTSA complaint (ODI 11480142) ended with a totaled vehicle and an injured passenger after lane-departure steered toward a phantom boundary. The True Touchpad infotainment blacked out backup cameras mid-reverse and dropped AcuraLink connectivity. For buyers who expected German-grade refinement, the 2nd-gen TLX's reliability record has been a hard reckoning.
The issues owners report most, ranked by severity — each one verified against a cited NHTSA source.

warning light; recall notice; repeated dealer repair
Recall 22V950000 covers defective tires on 2022 TLX that can suffer sudden air loss and loss of vehicle control. If a dealer's tire inspection and replacement did not permanently resolve the issue — or if the owner made repeat service visits before the recall was announced — those attempts may count under Song-Beverly Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2. Tire-related loss-of-control directly impairs the safety of the vehicle and supports a substantial-impairment finding.
Dealers will inspect and replace the tires as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 30, 2023. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is GCW.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 24V064000 addresses a front passenger seat weight sensor that may crack and cause unintended or absent airbag deployment in a crash — a serious safety defect. Parts for this recall were unavailable for extended periods (6+ months post-notification), forcing owners to restrict front passenger use. Under Song-Beverly, time the vehicle is 'out of service' during a recall remedy backorder may count toward the 30-day cumulative threshold for lemon-law eligibility.
Dealers will replace the seat weight sensors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 28, 2024, October 18, 2024, and August 2025. This is a phased recall. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for these recalls are XHP and VHQ.
fuel smell; fuel leak; reduced fuel range; fuel filler or fuel tank recall
Recall 24V950000 covers a fuel tank assembly with an improperly welded filler neck that can produce a fuel leak — a documented fire-risk defect, the highest severity category. If an owner detected a fuel smell or visible leak before the recall was announced and made warranty visits that failed to identify the root cause, those visits count toward the Song-Beverly repair-attempt tally. A fuel-fire risk defect also supports the statute's alternative single-attempt standard for life-threatening safety defects.
Dealers will replace the fuel tank assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 3, 2025. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is JKX.
brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light
Recall 25V391000 covers a brake pedal pivot pin that can shift out of position, preventing normal brake application — a direct loss-of-braking-control defect. The recall affects every model year of the 2nd-gen TLX (2021-2025). If a California owner experienced brake pedal abnormalities and made warranty visits before the July 2025 notification, each visit is an attempted repair under Song-Beverly. Brake failure at any speed constitutes substantial impairment to safety and may support a lemon-law buyback claim.
Dealers will inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2025. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are FLX and XLY.
airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault
Recall 26V332000 is part of a broader Honda occupant-classification sensor campaign covering 2021 and 2023 TLX models; owner notification is expected July 2026. The defect can cause airbag non-deployment in a crash. Owners whose vehicles have not yet been repaired are currently driving with a live safety defect. Under Song-Beverly, a confirmed active recall that has not been remedied due to scheduling delays or parts availability may support a claim, particularly when combined with other defects on the same vehicle.
Dealers will replace the seat weight sensors, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 6, 2026. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are BOL, WO9, OOA, WOM, XOH, NOC, POD, BOE, UOF, POB, EOG, AOI, QO8, TOJ, DO
engine stalls while driving; sudden complete power loss at highway speed; car loses acceleration unexpectedly; check engine light; engine dies and will not restart; Type S engine cuts out without warning
A powertrain software recall causing engine stall or sudden power loss at highway speeds is a safety defect under California Song-Beverly. If a dealer's software reprogram fails to permanently resolve the stalling — or if the vehicle stalled before the recall remedy was applied and the owner made multiple warranty visits — those repair attempts count toward the lemon-law substantial-impairment threshold. Type S buyers paid a $15,000+ premium over base; persistent stalling directly impairs the car's core function and substantially impairs its value.
Dealer reprograms FI-ECU software at no charge (Recall 25V031000). Owner notifications mailed March 2025.
loud bang or pop from under the car; all-wheel drive stops working; car drives in front-wheel drive only; no warning lights or codes; sluggish acceleration from a stop; SH-AWD system failure; transfer case failure; transmission spline stripped; PTU failure; AWD not engaging
Silent loss of all-wheel drive is a substantial impairment to use and value for a vehicle marketed and priced specifically on its SH-AWD capability. Under Song-Beverly Cal. Civ. Code §1793.2, if the dealer replaces the PTU or transmission and the failure recurs — or if the dealer refuses repair citing 'no fault codes' — each visit counts as an attempted repair. Three or more attempts, or the vehicle out of service 30+ days, may establish lemon-law eligibility. Owners should document every visit even when the dealer says 'could not duplicate.'
Dealer replacement of PTU/transfer case and/or transmission under powertrain warranty (if within coverage period); out-of-warranty owners have paid $3,000–$8,000 out of pocket. No OEM software fix. No recall issued as of enrichment date. NHTSA petition DP26001 open.
car slams on brakes with no car in front; CMBS activates on empty road; collision warning goes off for no reason; radar obstructed warning in rain; adaptive cruise suddenly decelerates; car brakes hard on highway without warning; AcuraWatch false alarm; emergency brake in traffic
Unintended hard braking at highway speed creates an immediate rear-collision hazard, making this a safety-class defect. Under Song-Beverly, repeated warranty visits for the same CMBS false-activation complaint — even if the dealer cannot replicate — constitute attempted repairs. One documented NHTSA complaint (ODI 11500621) resulted in a rear-end collision caused by the false activation. A California owner who has had two or more CMBS events and dealer visits should document each episode with dates, mileage, and repair order numbers.
Dealer has typically been unable to replicate under dry-weather test conditions; complaints often closed with no repair. Radar sensor cleaning or radar module calibration attempted in some cases. AcuraWatch sensitivity settings can be adjusted but not fully disabled in early 2021-2022 models. No recall or TSB with a permanent fix identified as of Jun 29, 2026.
infotainment screen goes black; screen freezes while reversing; backup camera not working; display randomly shuts off; touchpad unresponsive; screen restarts on its own; AcuraLink not connecting; Apple CarPlay drops connection; crackling noise from speakers; audio cuts out
While infotainment failures alone often do not satisfy the 'substantial impairment to use, value, or safety' threshold independently, a screen that blacks out while reversing creates a real safety hazard and strengthens a Song-Beverly claim when combined with other defects. If a California owner has been in three or more times for infotainment issues without a permanent fix, or the vehicle was out of service cumulatively 30+ days for electrical/infotainment repairs, that pattern may support a lemon-law claim regardless of severity classification.
Dealer software update or head unit reset in some cases; hardware replacement in others. BCM/water-intrusion cases require identifying and sealing the leak plus BCM or PCM replacement. No system-wide software fix confirmed as of Jun 29, 2026.
steering suddenly becomes very heavy; power steering warning light; 'Electric Power Steering Problem' message; steering wheel locks while driving; car hard to steer; steering rack replaced; steering column fluid leak; clicking noise when turning
Complete loss of power steering at highway speed is unambiguously a safety defect. Under Song-Beverly, a single confirmed steering loss that has not been permanently resolved after a reasonable number of repair attempts may be sufficient to support a claim — the statute does not require three attempts when the defect creates a serious hazard. California owners should preserve every repair order documenting the steering complaint and any diagnosis.
Dealer replacement of steering rack-and-pinion assembly (covered under warranty if within coverage period). BCM-cascade cases require electrical diagnosis first. No TSB or recall for EPS failure as of Jun 29, 2026.
Adaptive Damper System Problem warning on dash; ADS error message on MID; cannot change suspension mode; sport/comfort mode switch not working; suspension warning light; rear suspension ADS fault codes C1646 C1647
An adaptive suspension system that repeatedly fails and cannot be repaired after multiple dealer visits qualifies as a warranty defect substantially impairing use and value for a buyer who paid for premium adaptive ride features. The existence of a Honda field investigation bulletin (TSB BTI&12022024902) confirms manufacturer awareness under Song-Beverly — awareness is a factor courts consider in evaluating willfulness for civil penalty purposes.
Dealer inspection of rear ADS wiring harness; replacement of corroded harness segments. Software/sensor replacement per manufacturer guidance. Covered under new-vehicle warranty if within 4 years/50,000 miles basic warranty.

Every item below comes from this vehicle's documented defects. The more you recognize, the more a free case review is worth your time.
Under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code §1790 et seq.), if Acura cannot repair a defect that substantially impairs your TLX's use, value, or safety after a reasonable number of attempts, you may be entitled to a replacement vehicle or a refund minus a mileage allowance.
THE PRESUMPTION RULE: Cal. Civ. Code §1793.22 creates a rebuttable lemon presumption if, within 18 months or 18,000 miles of delivery: (a) two or more repair attempts for a defect likely to cause death or serious injury — e.g., CMBS false braking, Type S engine stall, or brake pedal failure; (b) four or more attempts for any warranty defect; or (c) the vehicle is out of service 30+ cumulative days.
SAME-ROOT-CAUSE RULE: Visits for 'brake pedal clicking' and 'brake warning light' may both count toward the same defect if they share a root cause — courts look at substance, not repair-order wording. This matters for TLX owners whose dealers have tried different diagnoses for the same underlying PTU or CMBS defect.
FOR TLX OWNERS: Manufacturer awareness documented in NHTSA petitions and Honda field investigation bulletins can support a willfulness finding for civil penalties up to two times the purchase price under Song-Beverly.
LAW AS OF JUNE 2026. Educational only — not legal advice. No attorney-client relationship created. Individual circumstances vary.
“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.
Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.
Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.
Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.
Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.
Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.
Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.
The TLX's worst defects — PTU spline failure and CMBS phantom braking — leave no fault codes. Dealers close them 'could not duplicate.' Protect your legal position:
1. RETURN AFTER EVERY EVENT. Each visit is a repair attempt under Song-Beverly whether or not the dealer finds the fault. Do not wait for symptoms to worsen.
2. WRITE IT DOWN BEFORE YOU ARRIVE. Bring a written statement: date, mileage, weather, speed, what you heard, what lights appeared. Request it be copied verbatim into the repair order. If the advisor declines, photograph your statement alongside dealer signage.
3. GET THE REPAIR ORDER EVERY VISIT. Read it before you leave. If it says 'no fault found,' ask the advisor to add your symptom description. Note any refusal with the advisor's name and date.
4. FOR AWD/PTU: Request a propeller-shaft spin test on a lift. The spline failure leaves no codes but shows the shaft stationary while front wheels spin under power. Ask for this test by name and document whether it was performed.
5. FOR CMBS EVENTS: Photograph the surroundings immediately (proving no obstacle). Request a radar calibration check and ask the technician to pull CMBS event data from the vehicle's control unit before the next drive cycle resets it.
6. LOG DAYS OUT OF SERVICE. California Civil Code §1793.22 presumes lemon status when the vehicle is out of service 30+ cumulative days for the same defect.
7. ESCALATE TO ACURA. Call 1-800-382-2238, open a case, cite the NHTSA recall campaigns affecting your VIN, and request a regional service engineer if the dealer cannot resolve the issue after two visits.
The 2nd-gen TLX is a capable driver's car — the Type S's 355-hp twin-turbo V6 and SH-AWD chassis are genuinely good, and the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ is real. What is equally real: a recall record touching every model year, a PTU spline-failure pattern large enough to earn an open NHTSA defect petition, and an infotainment system criticized by virtually every automotive outlet.
The pattern we see most in lemon-law intake is the PTU failure — silent, codeless, and dismissed by dealers who won't commit to a repair without a fault code. The CMBS phantom-braking events are the most dangerous single complaint category; at least one ended in a collision. If your TLX has been in twice for any of these issues, the record is worth a professional review at no cost to you.
— The Margarian Law team
If your 2021-2025 Acura TLX has been in twice for AWD failure, CMBS phantom braking, a Type S engine stall, or recurring infotainment issues, you may have options under California's lemon law. Margarian Law has handled thousands of lemon cases and offers a free case review — no fee unless we recover for you.
A spline failure inside the transfer case (PTU) can silently disconnect rear-wheel power with no fault codes and no dashboard warning. NHTSA received 20+ complaints and opened Defect Petition DP26001 in March 2026. Ask your dealer to perform a propeller-shaft spin test on a lift to confirm. If your vehicle has been in twice for this issue without a fix, you may have lemon-law options.
Yes. NHTSA Recall 25V031000 covers 2021-2025 TLX Type S for a fuel-injection software error that can cause the engine to stall or lose power unexpectedly. Approximately 294,612 vehicles are affected. Dealers reprogram the FI-ECU at no charge. If you experienced stalling before the March 2025 notification and visited the dealer multiple times, you may qualify for a lemon-law claim.
The AcuraWatch Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS) has generated multiple NHTSA complaints of hard autonomous braking with no obstacle present — including on clear freeways and in rain where the radar declares obstruction. At least one documented event caused a rear-end collision (ODI 11500621). Bring the vehicle in immediately after each event and request a radar calibration check. Each dealer visit, even if no fault is found, counts as a repair attempt under California lemon law.
Five NHTSA campaigns cover the 2021-2025 TLX: tire bead damage (22V950000, 2022 only); occupant sensor/airbag (24V064000, 26V332000); fuel tank weld/fire risk (24V950000, 2021-2023); brake pedal pivot pin (25V391000, all 2021-2025); and Type S FI-ECU engine stall (25V031000, all 2021-2025 Type S). Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or call Acura at 1-888-234-2138.
Multiple NHTSA owners report the True Touchpad display going black while reversing (blocking the backup camera), spontaneously rebooting, and AcuraLink failing to connect. Water intrusion in some 2021-2022 units caused BCM malfunctions that cascaded into infotainment and steering failures simultaneously. Major automotive reviewers have called the True Touchpad interface among the worst in its class. If your dealer has seen the car three or more times for infotainment issues without a permanent fix, document those visits — they may support a lemon-law claim.
Under California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act, you may qualify for a replacement or full refund if Acura cannot repair a substantial defect after a reasonable number of attempts — generally two attempts for a safety defect, or four for any defect, or 30+ cumulative days out of service. The TLX's documented defects — AWD failure, engine stall, brake issues, and CMBS false braking — can each independently support a claim. A free case review with a qualified attorney can determine if your specific repair history qualifies.
