The overview

What owners are dealing with

You bought the 2016-2022 Acura ILX because it wore an Acura badge and cost less than a TLX while offering the same nameplate promise: refined, dependable, above-average quality. A compact luxury sedan that would start reliably in the morning, brake smoothly in traffic, and deliver the long-term ownership experience you expected from a Japanese luxury brand. For a meaningful portion of ILX owners, that promise has not been kept.

The 2016-2022 ILX generation is subject to seven separate NHTSA recall campaigns — an unusual number for a compact sedan in its price class. Three of those recalls target the fuel system: a deformed tank that makes the gauge read full when the tank is nearly empty, and two rounds of low-pressure fuel pump failures that cause stalling at highway speed. Two recalls address the airbag system: a Takata driver inflator susceptible to moisture-induced rupture, and a manufacturing error that could cause the inflator to explode in a collision. A fifth recall covers a driveshaft that can separate from the half shaft and leave the vehicle without drive power. And the most recent campaign — still generating complaints in 2025 and 2026 — is a brake master cylinder seal that can deform and reduce braking ability, with parts on national backorder for months at a time.

Beyond the formal recalls, Acura issued at least seven technical service bulletins (TSBs) for the ILX's DE3 generation: an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that jolts on deceleration, an infotainment touchscreen that freezes, a cold-start engine knock, a rear suspension clunk, an SRS warning light from water-damaged crash sensor wiring, a paint warranty extension for two specific blue paint colors, and persistent steering wheel rattle. Each TSB represents a defect Acura confirmed in writing but did not always fix on the first — or second — dealer visit.

If your ILX has cycled through more repair appointments than you expected for a nearly-new car, California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act may give you meaningful options.

Airbag / Occupant Detection Defect - Airbag May Not Deploy CorrectlySafety2016
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 16V061000 covers a Takata driver airbag inflator that can rupture with metal fragments in a crash — one of the most dangerous airbag defects in automotive history. Phased notification schedules for Takata recalls meant some 2016 ILX owners waited months or years for replacement parts. Under Song-Beverly, a safety recall that cannot be completed because Acura cannot supply parts in a reasonable time — leaving the owner unable to safely operate the vehicle — may support a lemon-law claim based on the vehicle being out of service for 30+ cumulative days. Document every dealer visit and any written communication about parts delays.

Typical fix

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the inflator, free of charge. The recall began March 2017. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are JY0, JY1, and JY2.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure - Stall or No-Start RiskDrivability/Reliability2016-2019
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 19V052000 covers a manufacturing defect causing the fuel tank to deform, elevating the pump float and making the gauge read a false 'full' — creating a real risk of running out of fuel without warning. Multiple ILX owners filed NHTSA complaints reporting the gauge showed full when the tank was empty, causing unexpected stalls. If a dealer performed the recall repair and stalling recurred — or if the vehicle stalled due to fuel starvation despite a repair attempt — each incident documented by date and mileage supports a Song-Beverly claim based on the manufacturer's inability to permanently repair the defect.

Typical fix

Acura will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and, as necessary, replace the fuel tank, free of charge. The recall began March 14, 2019. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is H3U, Z3T.

Airbag / Occupant Detection Defect - Airbag May Not Deploy CorrectlySafety2016
Symptoms

airbag warning light; passenger airbag may not deploy; SRS warning; occupant detection fault

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 19V182000 covers a manufacturing error causing the driver frontal airbag inflator to potentially explode in a crash — a distinct and more severe defect mode than the moisture-susceptible Takata inflator in iss-01. Two separate airbag inflator safety recalls affecting the same 2016 ILX signal a systemic airbag system quality failure. Under Song-Beverly, two or more repair attempts for the same or closely related safety system (airbags) without a confirmed permanent fix — including cases where parts remained on national backorder — may be evaluated as a cumulative pattern qualifying for repurchase eligibility.

Typical fix

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driver's air bag inflator with an alternate inflator, free of charge. The recall began April 10, 2019. Honda owners may contact customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is O41. Acura owners may contact customer service

Driveshaft Separation - Loss of Drive PowerSafety2016-2019
Symptoms

clunking from drivetrain; loss of drive power; vehicle may roll when parked

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 19V424000 covers a half-shaft driveshaft that can separate from the vehicle due to excess grease preventing proper set-ring engagement. A separated driveshaft causes sudden loss of drive power at speed — a direct collision risk — and can allow unintended vehicle movement in Park. NHTSA complaint ODI 11195384 documents a 2017 ILX with both transmission and axle failure within the first eight months of ownership. Under California law, a safety defect requiring two or more repair attempts may qualify for immediate repurchase, bypassing the standard four-attempt threshold.

Typical fix

Acura will notify owners, and dealers will inspect, and, as necessary, replace the driveshaft and half shaft, free of charge. The recall began August 1, 2019. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is G54.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure - Stall or No-Start RiskDrivability/Reliability2019
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 21V215000 covers a fuel pump that can fail inside the tank, causing the engine to stall while driving — a genuine safety risk at highway speeds. The 2019 ILX was subject to this recall in addition to the earlier fuel tank deformation recall (19V052000), meaning owners faced two separate fuel system campaigns. Multiple NHTSA complainants document stalling events occurring before the recall remedy was available, and extended parts shortages that prevented timely repair. An ILX that stalled and could not be repaired in a reasonable time due to parts unavailability may qualify for Song-Beverly relief based on cumulative days out of service (30+ days threshold).

Typical fix

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump assembly, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed May 18, 2021. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Note: This recall is an expansion of recall 20V-314.

Low-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure - Stall or No-Start RiskDrivability/Reliability2016-2020
Symptoms

engine stalls while driving; vehicle will not start; loss of power; fuel pump recall

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 23V858000 is the third fuel pump recall covering the 2016-2020 ILX, expanding the scope of 19V052000 and 21V215000. By the time this campaign was issued in 2023, many ILX owners had experienced fuel-pump-related stalling over multiple years. Owners whose vehicles stalled under any of the three fuel pump campaigns — and who experienced parts delays exceeding 30 cumulative days — should document each service visit. A defect that recurred after prior recall repairs, or that required three or more separate dealer visits for fuel-system complaints, directly supports a Song-Beverly pattern-of-defects claim. Retain all prior recall completion records.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the fuel pump module, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed September 6, 2024. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are KGC and KGD. This recall is an expansion of NHTSA recall numbers 21V-215 and 20V-314.

Brake System Defect - Reduced Brake Assist or Unexpected BrakingSafety2016-2020
Symptoms

brake pedal problem; reduced braking; unexpected braking; brake warning light

Why it matters for your claim

Recall 25V859000 covers a brake master cylinder seal that deforms from contaminated brake fluid, causing an internal leak and reduced braking ability — with the potential for the pedal to sink to the floor. Multiple NHTSA complaints describe exactly this symptom and document owners being told remedy parts are on national backorder for months, with one complainant told repairs would only be prioritized once 'brakes begin to fail.' Under Song-Beverly, a safety recall that Acura has failed to remedy within a reasonable time — particularly for brake failure that renders the vehicle dangerous — creates independent liability. Document every attempt to schedule the recall repair and any written statements from Acura about parts availability timelines.

Typical fix

Dealers will replace the brake master cylinder, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed May 4, 2026. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is RN5. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov b

HandsFreeLink Bluetooth Phone-Pairing Parasitic Battery Drain / Dead BatteryFunctional2016-2018
Symptoms

car battery completely dead overnight or after short parking periods; push-to-start fails with no warning after vehicle sat for a day or two; need to jump-start the ILX regularly; dash flashing and alarm triggering when vehicle is off; Bluetooth phone pairing drops and will not reconnect; HandsFreeLink system slow to respond or unresponsive on startup; battery warning light on after Bluetooth use

Why it matters for your claim

A Bluetooth module defect that kills the 12V battery and prevents starting is not merely a convenience failure — it leaves an owner stranded. Under Song-Beverly, if the dealer replaces the battery without identifying and correcting the root parasitic draw, and the battery dies again, that second visit counts as a separate repair attempt for the same defect. Three or more failed attempts to fix the same underlying module issue — or 30 cumulative days out of service — may support a lemon-law claim. Retain every repair order and battery test printout.

Typical fix

Dealer diagnosis of parasitic draw; module software update or HandsFreeLink module replacement. Battery replacement if significantly discharged. Some owners report recurrence after initial repair.

Sunroof / Panoramic Moonroof Glass Spontaneous Shattering While DrivingSafety2016-2020
Symptoms

sunroof or moonroof glass shatters suddenly while driving at highway speed; loud explosion-like sound from roof with no external impact; glass falls into cabin or onto surrounding vehicles; rear window spontaneously shatters (possibly while rear defroster is active); debris strikes driver or passengers after glass breaks

Why it matters for your claim

Spontaneous glass shattering while in motion is a safety event — glass debris can distract or injure occupants and compromise structural visibility. If Honda/Acura denies the claim as 'road damage' after a dealer inspection that finds no external impact point, and the owner disputes this conclusion, that dispute itself is worth documenting. Under Song-Beverly, a safety defect that a dealer fails to identify or repair after a visit counts as a repair attempt. Photograph the glass breakage pattern before any cleanup.

Typical fix

Sunroof glass panel replacement. Warranty coverage is vehicle- and situation-dependent; Honda/Acura has contested whether spontaneous shattering is a manufacturing defect or road-debris impact when no external cause is identified.

Exterior Paint Peeling / Clearcoat Failure Around Windshield and Rear WindowCosmetic/Annoyance2016-2022
Symptoms

paint peeling off around front windshield perimeter; clearcoat lifting and bubbling around rear window; paint loss progressing to bare metal or primer; Bellanova White Pearl paint peeling with no accident or aftermarket work; dealer or Acura customer service saying VIN is not included in existing paint recall; rust developing under peeled paint areas

Why it matters for your claim

Paint peeling classified as cosmetic rarely drives a standalone lemon-law claim, but can strengthen a broader pattern-of-defects argument when combined with safety or drivability issues. Additionally, if Honda/Acura's paint service program covers the defect but excludes specific VINs or colors arbitrarily, owners may have warranty-claim rights under the basic limited warranty (3 years/36,000 miles) or the corrosion/paint perforation warranty. Document the peeling with dated photos; get any Acura denial in writing.

Typical fix

Repaint of affected panels under warranty or Honda/Acura goodwill if within the program scope. Owners whose VINs are excluded may need to escalate to Acura Customer Care or pursue a warranty claim through Honda/Acura dispute resolution. Out-of-warranty repairs typically require owner-paid repainting.

Front Steering / Suspension Clicking and Rattling at Low Speed or When TurningFunctional2016-2022
Symptoms

clicking or clunking noise from the front of the car when turning the steering wheel; rattling from the front right or front left when driving over bumps at low speed; noise persists on loaner vehicle and replacement, suggesting platform-wide pattern; steering feels notchy or catches when making slow-speed turns; creaking sound from steering column when maneuvering in parking lots; noise returns after dealer inspection finds nothing wrong

Why it matters for your claim

Steering noise that recurs after multiple dealer visits — and that the dealer cannot duplicate or attributes to 'normal' operation — is a classic cannot-duplicate scenario. Under Song-Beverly, the owner's documented symptom record and repair orders establish the repair attempt count. If the noise is accompanied by handling changes or if a subsequent inspection reveals worn safety components (ball joint, tie rod end), the issue may escalate from Functional to Safety severity. Keep all repair orders and note exact conditions when the noise occurs.

Typical fix

Dealer inspection of strut upper mounts, ball joints, tie rod ends, and steering rack; lubrication or replacement of worn components. If no fault found, dealer may attribute noise to normal operating characteristics. Owners with persistent noise after multiple dealer visits should document each repair order.

Headlight Assembly Water Intrusion / Condensation — Turn Signal and ADAS FailureSafety2019-2022
Symptoms

visible condensation or water pooling inside headlight housing; turn signal flickering or failing intermittently; headlights dimming or shutting off unexpectedly at night; blind spot monitoring or lane departure warning deactivating without driver input; headlight lens appears foggy or cloudy from interior moisture; short circuit warning from headlight area after rain or car wash; ADAS warning lights illuminating alongside headlight failure

Why it matters for your claim

Headlight failure at night is a federal safety lighting requirement; intermittent turn signal failure is a direct traffic-safety concern. If the defect disables AcuraWatch ADAS functions (blind spot, lane departure), the scope becomes a multi-system safety failure. Under Song-Beverly, safety defects require fewer repair attempts to trigger lemon-law eligibility — as few as two unsuccessful attempts. If water re-enters the housing after a resealing attempt, document the recurrence date and mileage immediately.

Typical fix

Headlight assembly resealing or replacement. If electrical damage has occurred, wiring harness inspection and repair. ADAS camera recalibration after headlight replacement if sensors are integrated into the assembly.

AcuraWatch LKAS / Forward Collision Camera Module Internal Electronic FailureFunctional2016-2022
Symptoms

all AcuraWatch driver-assist functions suddenly suspended or unavailable; LKAS (lane keeping assist) warning light illuminated; adaptive cruise control disengaged and unavailable; forward collision warning system offline; DTC U3000-49 (Internal Electronic Failure) stored in camera module; dealer confirms camera module requires replacement at owner's expense after warranty

Why it matters for your claim

AcuraWatch camera module failure disables federally marketed safety systems — Honda advertises collision mitigation braking and lane keeping as safety features. When this module fails out of warranty and the repair cost exceeds $1,500, it represents a significant financial impact. If the failure occurs during the warranty period and the dealer's repair does not permanently resolve the fault code, that visit counts toward the Song-Beverly repair-attempt threshold for a safety system defect. Owners should request the DTC printout and repair order before leaving the dealership.

Typical fix

Camera module replacement (part #36160-TX6-A03-M1 or current supersession) plus full AcuraWatch system calibration by a dealer-certified technician. Total cost approximately $1,500-$1,800 at current dealer rates. Calibration requires a specific flat, marked target surface and cannot be completed with aftermarket equipment.

8-Speed DCT Hard Downshift / Bump on Deceleration — TSB B17-003Drivability/Reliability2016-2017
Symptoms

transmission jolts or bumps when slowing to a stop; hard shift from 2nd to 1st gear on deceleration; jerk or lurch when coming to a stop light; intermittent — may be hard to replicate at the dealer

Why it matters for your claim

TSB B17-003 confirms Acura acknowledged this transmission defect formally. If the dealer cannot resolve the jolt after repeated PCM updates, or if the symptom returns after a declared repair, each failed repair attempt counts toward California's Song-Beverly four-repair threshold. Owners should obtain signed repair orders each visit documenting the symptom and the PCM software version applied before and after the update.

Typical fix

PCM software update via J2534 rewrite; dealer-performed clutch break-in drive cycle.

ODMD Touchscreen Freezing / HandsFreeLink Bluetooth Integration Failure — TSBs B18070B, BTS171101, BTS180203Functional2016-2018
Symptoms

touchscreen not responding to touch inputs; infotainment screen freezes or is stuck; navigation unresponsive; audio controls unresponsive; issue worse in cold weather; HandsFreeLink Bluetooth phonebook not displaying after iOS update; Pandora not showing on screen after phone software update; screen displays wrong presets or blank preset slots

Why it matters for your claim

While an infotainment failure alone may not independently trigger lemon-law eligibility, California courts have found that repeated inability to restore contractually warranted features constitutes a substantial impairment of use. If the dealer performs the B18070B debris-clearance fix but the screen continues to freeze and this pattern repeats across two or more repair visits, the owner has documented a warranty defect that has not been cured — supporting a Song-Beverly claim based on recurring warranty nonconformity.

Typical fix

Dealer clears bezel gap debris (business card method per B18070B). iOS compatibility resolved via HFL software update. Persistent screen failures may require ODMD unit replacement.

Your rights in California

The Song-Beverly Act protects you

California's Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act (Cal. Civ. Code section 1790 et seq.) is among the strongest lemon-law statutes in the United States. The following is general legal information only — it is not legal advice and does not create an attorney-client relationship. Consult a qualified attorney for advice about your specific situation. Law as of June 2026.

Under Song-Beverly, if your Acura ILX has a nonconformity to the manufacturer's warranty that substantially impairs its use, value, or safety, and the manufacturer or its authorized dealer has been given a reasonable number of repair attempts without success, you may be entitled to a vehicle replacement or a full repurchase (including taxes, registration, and finance charges, minus a use allowance).

For the 2016-2022 ILX specifically:

  • The brake master cylinder recall (25V859000) involves a defect that directly impairs braking. An unrepaired safety recall with parts on extended backorder may itself constitute a failure to repair within a reasonable time.
  • The three fuel pump recalls (19V052000, 21V215000, 23V858000) involve stall risk at speed. Owners who experienced stalls before or during the recall repair period have documented warranty failures.
  • TSB-acknowledged defects like the DCT downshift jolt (B17-003) or cold-start engine knock (B19-012) can qualify even if the dealer could not reproduce them on a given visit, as long as the owner's documented complaint history demonstrates a recurring pattern.

Song-Beverly's 'reasonable number of attempts' is not strictly defined, but courts have generally found that four repair attempts for the same defect, or 30 or more cumulative days out of service across all warranty repairs, raises a presumption of lemon-law eligibility. Safety defects — brake failure, airbag system, driveshaft separation — may qualify with fewer attempts. This page does not constitute legal advice.

30+
days out of service for repairs can support a claim

Do this

If the dealer says they can't duplicate it

“Could not duplicate” doesn't mean the defect isn't real. Here's exactly what to do to protect a potential California lemon-law claim.

  1. 1

Document the moment it happens. Photos, video, and screenshots of any warning lights — with the date and the mileage.

  2. 2

Get a repair order every visit — even “found nothing.” That paperwork is the foundation of a claim.

  3. 3

Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Note any recall that has no available remedy yet.

  4. 4

Track your out-of-service days. California law counts the cumulative days your vehicle spends in the shop.

  5. 5

Keep loaner & rental records. Alternate-transport paperwork during long repairs matters.

  6. 6

Save everything in one place. Symptoms, dates, repair orders, and every repeat visit — the intermittent ones especially.

For your Acura ILX specifically

The Acura ILX's most persistent problems — the DCT downshift jolt, the cold-start engine knock, the freezing infotainment screen, the steering wheel rattle — are intermittent by nature. Dealers who cannot reproduce them during a test drive will often write 'no problem found.' Here is how to build a record that holds up:

1. Document every occurrence in real time. Keep a notes app on your phone. Each time you experience the symptom, record: exact date, time, outside temperature, mileage, what you were doing (decelerating, cold start, after rain, etc.), and a description of what happened. Screenshots of any dashboard warning lights with the odometer visible are especially valuable.

2. Bring a written symptom log to every service visit. Hand it to the service adviser and ask them to attach it to the repair order. This prevents a 'customer states' description that is vague enough to dismiss.

3. Reference the applicable TSB by number. For the DCT bump, ask the adviser to check TSB B17-003 and document the PCM software version before and after any update. For the engine knock, reference B19-012. For the touchscreen, reference B18070B. For the SRS light, reference B18-016. A repair order that cites the applicable TSB is far stronger than one that says 'inspected, no fault found.'

4. Request a cold-start test for the engine knock. Ask the service manager to arrange a first-start-of-the-day observation with the vehicle left overnight. A cold-start knock that disappears by the time the tech warms up the car will never be caught otherwise.

5. Insist on a repair order for every visit, even warranty denials. California requires dealers to provide a written repair order stating what was inspected and what action was taken. 'Cannot duplicate' must be written down — verbal dismissals are not enforceable.

6. Count your visits and check open recalls. Song-Beverly's repair opportunity threshold considers cumulative attempts to fix the same defect. At every visit, ask the service adviser to check all open NHTSA recall campaigns for your VIN — the 2016-2020 ILX may have up to five open campaigns. Time spent waiting for recall remedy parts counts toward California's 30-cumulative-day out-of-service threshold.

The 2016-2022 Acura ILX carries an unusually heavy recall record for a compact luxury sedan — seven NHTSA campaigns spanning airbags, three fuel pump failure modes, a separating driveshaft, and now a brake master cylinder that is unavailable to repair. That last detail matters: a car with a formal brake recall and no remedy parts available is not a car its owner should be required to drive without recourse.

On top of the recalls, the TSB record — seven confirmed Acura service bulletins addressing the DCT, infotainment, engine, suspension, SRS sensor wiring, steering, and paint — reveals a product that required substantial post-sale correction. Most of these issues are intermittent, creating the frustrating 'no problem found' dealership cycle. If you have made multiple trips for any of these issues and the problem has not been permanently resolved, a free case evaluation with a lemon-law attorney costs you nothing and may reveal options you did not know you had.

FAQ

Acura ILX lemon-law questions

Why does my Acura ILX brake pedal sink to the floor?

A deformed brake master cylinder seal is the most likely cause. Recall 25V859000 covers this defect in 2016-2020 Acura ILX models — contaminated brake fluid deforms the seal, causing an internal fluid leak and reduced stopping ability. Dealers replace the master cylinder at no charge, but parts have been on national backorder. Check your VIN at NHTSA.gov and contact your Acura dealer immediately.

How many recalls does the 2016-2022 Acura ILX have?

The 2016-2022 Acura ILX has up to seven active NHTSA recall campaigns depending on model year: two airbag inflator recalls (16V061000 and 19V182000), three fuel system recalls (19V052000, 21V215000, 23V858000), one driveshaft separation recall (19V424000), and one brake master cylinder recall (25V859000). The 2016 model is subject to the most campaigns. Search your VIN at NHTSA.gov.

Why does my Acura ILX transmission jolt or bump when slowing down?

A jolt or bump when decelerating to a stop is a known issue on 2016-2017 Acura ILX models with the 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Acura issued TSB B17-003 confirming a PCM software calibration error causes the hard 2nd-to-1st downshift. A software update and clutch break-in procedure is the prescribed fix. If the symptom returns after the update, each recurrence supports a warranty claim.

Is the 2016-2022 Acura ILX a lemon?

The 2016-2022 Acura ILX has seven NHTSA safety recalls covering airbags, fuel pump failure, driveshaft separation, and brake master cylinder failure — plus at least seven TSBs for transmission, infotainment, engine, and suspension defects. Whether your specific vehicle qualifies as a lemon under California's Song-Beverly Act depends on your repair history. Two or more repair attempts for a safety defect, or four or more for any defect, may trigger eligibility. A free case review can clarify your rights.

Why is my Acura ILX touchscreen freezing or not responding?

The 2016-2018 Acura ILX On Demand Multi-Use Display can freeze or become unresponsive due to debris lodged in the gap between the touchscreen and its bezel — a defect Acura acknowledged in TSB B18070B. Cold weather worsens the symptom. Separate TSBs (BTS171101, BTS180203) address HandsFreeLink Bluetooth phonebook failures after iOS 11 updates. If repeated dealer visits have not resolved these issues, this may support a warranty claim.

Can I get a refund or buyback for my Acura ILX in California?

California's Song-Beverly Act may entitle you to a vehicle replacement or refund if Acura has failed to repair the same warranty-covered defect after a reasonable number of attempts — typically two attempts for safety defects (brake, airbag, fuel stall, driveshaft) or four attempts for other defects. Time spent waiting for recall parts counts toward the 30-cumulative-day out-of-service threshold. A free case review can evaluate your specific repair history.
